Walker311 -> I have welts at night (4/27/2008 11:36:28 PM)

I can be sitting in my chair working on my laptop and my back will start itching. This only happens at home and at night.

I go and raise my shirt and look in the mirror at my back and I have several large welts as if bitten by mosquitos but these are not insect bites.

They are not there the next morning. This has been going on for years.

I don't think it is an allergy. Any ideas?

Perhaps there is something on your chair that you are allergic to ... since that's the only time you have these welts.

I would have it thoroughly cleaned.

Hives. You can be allergic to something, but you don't have to be. It just happens in some people and they never find a reason why.

Switch the chair for a different one and see if you still get the welts. As the others have said, could be an allergy.

Fleas? Bedbugs?

I broke out a few months ago because of changing brands of laundry detergent! Have you cleaned that chair recently with upholstry cleaner, or used something like Ferbreeze on it?

Walker,

I have had the same problem and still do. But I don't get big welts, I just get little bumps and the itch is horrible. NOTHING seems to stop it. I have tried benedryl thinking it was an allergic reaction. I ruled out bed bugs because it happens at night and only at night, but it doesn't matter where I am. My doc checked my liver or kidney function. I think kidney because that can cause itching if your kidneys are not working properly, but mine were. Now I put primrose oil on when I feel it and sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't. that is when I head straight for the benedryl and just knock myself out so I don't notice. It is horrible. But my doc said nothing is wrong with me and it has been going on for years for me too.

hives- skin condition characterized by intensely itching welts and caused by an allergic reaction to internal or external agents, an infection, or a nervous condition.

I think this is the closest to it.

It's not the chair, bugs, or detergent. It reminds me of flea bites. We have a dog but he does not have fleas.

Walker311 -> RE: I have welts at night (4/29/2008 3:47:56 PM)

I also have hair on my back.

GrahamCracker -> RE: I have welts at night (4/29/2008 4:28:46 PM)

My first thought was fleas. However, there are typically bites on the ankles and the welts are not pronounced. Sometimes, not obvious. Mites are another possibility. However, I have never had those. I suspect there are mites that are difficult to see.

Walker, it could be stress related.
Just a thought.

I had a rash a bit ago and thought it may be flea bites, but Munchie didn't have fleas... I got a stroppy vets nurse when I decided to go get some flea treatment (house spray and frontline) who told me that fleas didn't live on animals, but in the bedding! Well her bedding doesn't have fleas either!

Having said that... I don't think what you have are fleas either ~ flea bites don't disappear overnight and then reappear (especially when you sound as though you're only getting them from sitting in the one chair.

I don't have them tonight.

Ok! Here is what I can't rule out and are suspects. I drink a lot of coffee. You ready? I average about 8 cups a day. Not teeny tiny cups but mansized cups and occasionally feel like little bugs are crawling all over me. I already mentioned hair on my back. My skin rates anywhere from normal to pretty dry. I do have some stress/nerves... who doesn't?

I figure it is could be a combination of these things but this may be closest of all>

Physical urticaria: Hives caused by direct physical stimulation of the skin -- for example, cold, heat, sun exposure, vibration, pressure, sweating, and exercise. The hives usually occur right where the skin was stimulated and rarely appear elsewhere. Most of the hives appear within one hour after exposure

OK. Here's a shot in the dark. Maybe completely off base. Read this:

Larry,

Nope!

I saw this disease highlighted on the discovery channel... I think, and gotta tell ya, this is like an alien disease with the fibers and the sores. Really has the docs baffled!

spiritchsr1 -> RE: I have welts at night (5/3/2008 6:38:44 AM)

It sounds more like nerves and lots of stress. Stress can cause all kinds of physical problems. TRy something to ease the stress. They have all kinds of prescription stuff. See your doctor on that.

Or you can try a few natural things such as Calcium and Magneisum supliments, or Niacinamide. I use all three of these myself and they do work. The niacinamide works great. It is the Non flush form of Niacin one of the B Vitamins. It smooths you right out. If you want to try an Herbal formula heres a good one. "Calm Tabs" available from Puritan Pride mail order.

Hey, let us know the outcome of this. This is very puzzling to me, too.

dianetavegia -> RE: I have welts at night (5/4/2008 9:20:40 PM)

You can also get hives from just something rubbing against your skin. I used to sit and touch my jawline while surfing the internet at night. I kept getting large hives in that area. When I realized what I was doing and stopped it, they didn't come back.

Most causes of hives are never proven. A doctor can guess and a doctor will give you a diagnosis of nonspecific uticaria which means, 'You've got hives and I don't have any idea why'.

quote:

In addition, hives may also result from the body's response to certain physical conditions, such as emotional stress, rubbing, cold wind, heat contact (prikkly heat rash), wearing tight clothing, or exercise after a heavy meal.

Walker311 -> RE: I have welts at night (5/5/2008 12:05:20 AM)

I'm pretty sure now that it is hives. It only happens on my back and shoulders and when it happens there are only about a half dozen welts.

It only happens occasionally but it drives me crazy. I have had this problem for several years. At least the flair up is only temporary and by morning they are gone.

Thanks for all your thoughts on this.
