As I was telling Sandy... I was thinking more about this last night too, and I think a lot depends on the setting you are doing a study...ANY study. In our small women's Bible study, we pick pretty much everything apart, so we're already collectively picking out the bones and throwing them away and eating the meat. There is much to be gained in digesting an author with the insight of other believers. I could see if someone was reading one of Beth Moore or Joyce Meyer's books on their own and taking it as inspired Gospel...there could be problems. Reading them in a group setting, with the book/author being a jumping off point to more research and discussion, I think is a wonderful thing and I have gleaned insight from both of those authors. And if you don't like people putting their own twist on what might have happened...Max Lucado, who is my favorite author of all time, is definitely part of that. We're human and women (well, Max isn't, but you know what I mean). We like to speculate as to what could have happened in Biblical people's minds and lives. I think as long as we know we are ONLY speculating, that's fine.

so are you going to keep me in suspense Sarah? LOL oh sorry.....there is a video series that Focus On The family sponsored that this guy leads (his name is Ray Vander Laan). His web site is HERE. FOTF's web site with all the video series he has helped them produce (it's actually six pages, so at the bottom, go to the next page) is HERE. His web site is awesome and has some great resources on it....and study guides, etc. He hasn't written a book...he preferes to "teach" because he is by nature a teacher, and doesn't feel that books are where God has called him. So he travels around doing lectures at schools and does the video series with FOTF and leads tours in Isreal as they walk through the land that Jesus lived in and he explains the culture like you wouldn't believe....it really comes alive. He is very good at taking the churchy view that we "western thinking" crew have grown up learning and throws it out the window and reteaches you how to think like the Eastern culture thinks...and it really changes the way you look at the Bible and the words that are written there...even simple little things that they get because of their culture that we simply don't get because we have never lived it or seen it or known it. quote:
I was thinking more about this last night too, and I think a lot depends on the setting you are doing a study...ANY study. YUP!!! And it depends on the group you would be studying with. There are some that are great at doing that, and then I have been in other groups that just don't get that deeply into anything not written on the book pages in front of them. I personally don't like groups like that...>I like it when you can really dig deep and get out of that book and on to the real things in you and the Bible.

I agree about some groups picking apart authors and finding the meat and some groups are content to have a "I feel and I think fest" instead. They don't know God so they are blown about by whatever the author says. In fact, the second has been my main experience with "Bible Study." If you are in a mature group, Donna, you are blessed beyond all measure. I have to fight to find one. I do have one now, but it dwindles. So many women want a book study instead of a Bible Study, and I refuse to be a part of that unless we are studying the scripture first in context and then looking at a book. It's just too easy to be misled otherwise. At least, that's what I have grown up seeing. That's why I just don't get the rush to pop-christianity books and why we'll read everything under the sun except our Bibles. I agree with the ideas given about doing a study "on your own." I would advise you to invite at least one other lady who is mature in the faith to make sure you don't misinterpret and to keep you accountable. If it was just the two of you, you could invite her over for refreshments while your children napped. I would also advise you to study the entire book the woman you want to study is because you may misunderstand if you you just take a passage without its context. God revealed Himself book by book and I have seen what a difference it makes when we see Him as He has revealed Himself. I mention that specifically because it's not something popular in the church in America. It's popular to bounce from text to text without ever learning the context or with reliance on the teacher to properly use the context There are three books I found that will help you study your Bible: How to Study Your Bible Lord, Teach Me to Study the Bible in 28 Days How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth Some of the things they suggest seem silly, but they do have benefit if you are like I was and didn't really observe the text. The fourth book is a book of women's testimonies that may inspire you.

Grrr, I just want to read a book about being a woman. I know that people have said captivating, but that doesn't fit my situation either. Any other good books out there? And please don't mention any Joyce Meyer ones, I am not reading hers!! Peacemaking Women by Tara Barthel is excellent She also has a website, blog and forums that you can check out to learn more about her.

We have women on many different levels in our group, but all are encouraged to push past the words on the page into life application of God's truth.

Kay Arthur is one of my favorite authors. The main reason is because I learned how to study my Bible through her PUP studies. She's not perfect, but her Bible studies are the best that I have seen. As Donna says, though, you still have to bring your brain when you read any author, including her. She is not the inspired Word. And she does not have all the answers. I love that she is taking the extracurricular activity of actual Inductive Bible Study to the congregation. I think it's a shame that the church has relegated Bible Study to leadership and scholarship when it ought to be a part of every believers daily life. Being able to pick up my Bible, observe what God says, and getting away from pop-christianty/denominational/devotional literature as my main form of "Bible Study" has changed my life in so many ways. I've gone from being a good Christian to being broken before God daily and convicted to live my position in Him and in light of His Word. But it's not Kay Arthur that makes the difference... it's that she led me to God's Word- not for salvation- but for growth in relationship to God and living Christ obediently. And there are other ways of learning to study your Bible well. The other book I mentioned is the one dh was taught in seminary. There are also other Christians who can mentor you, but those are few and far between (at least in my experience) because of the culture we've built in the church.

I didn't use the colored pencils either. Kay Arthur will also be at the conference with Beth Moore and Priscilla Shier. I don't know anything about Priscilla though. Have any of you ever read her books?

I am doing one of Priscilla Shirer's Bible Studies right now: He Speaks to Me. I am enjoying it because she is very focused on application, but she has not had us doing alot of deep Scripture searching. It is only a six week study. I am finding that while I do prefer some methods of study over others, as long as I am in God's Word, His Spirit will be at work in my heart. While, the "study" of the scripture right now is not as intense, I can't remember a time in recent history where I have been so convicted in such specific ways. It just reminds me that it is about my heart searching God's heart. If anyone is looking for a fresh perspective with inductive study, I would recommend studies by Jan Wells. I have done two of hers and have heard her speak at a woman's brunch and she was just at our women's retreat this last weekend. God has truly gifted her with uncovering those pearls in scripture. HERE is a link to her web sight.

Thank you everyone I took a look atKay Arthur's books and they look good, but I do know how to study the Bible, its just getting motivated and time and energy to do it. All I used to do before I was married was sit in my room and study study study the Bible. I guess I miss that time and that feeling and learning. I did buy a Max Lucado book I haven't read before so I will start there :)
