Tammy, I never really got engorged either. I had some pretty full feeling breasts and slight achiness the day my milk came in, but that was it. I had supply issues with both of mine too, but I'm not sure if it has to do with lack of engorgement.

I never had the engorgement women talk about when my milk came in...is that okay or is something wrong? I'm wondering if that's why I've had supply issues? Course it doesn't help that I was supplimenting early on. some women just don't get the engorgement that others do. It has gone down for me over the years and the kids that I have had. My first I never really got that engorged though either...but much more then with my fourth. (Of course with my first my milk didn't come in til he was nine days old either and with several of the others it never dried up after stopping bfing while pregnant, so it never really "came in")

ORIGINAL: peculiar_lady2 Jeanie...my tips on babysitters. I found it best when we did have people to watch our little ones, that I show up where the baby would be dropped off (unless it was at home) early enough to get one last feeding in before I left. Schedule it so that you are leaving right after a feeding if at all possible. Then have a set time that you will be back by so that the sitter knows and can determine if they need to feed the baby or just wait ten minutes til you are back. There is nothing worse then you needing to feed the baby and he/she not wanting to eat cause they just had a bottle!!!! Hi, Sarah -- thanks for the insight! The babysitters will be my in-laws (who are local) or my sister (who is also local), or my parents or sister/BIL if they come into town. I have more people chomping at the bit to babysit him so we're fortunate to have good options. I don't actually think DH and I would initially be gone long enough to NEED a bottle but I don't dare leave for too long and just assume he'll be fine with his food. I do feed right before I leave the house, though, as DH and I start the "food clock" when he finishes. For example, he finished eating at 8:15 this morning and it's now almost noon so he is well past 3 hours so I know he is needing to eat soon AND I am going to have lunch out with my sister so I have planned it to get myself ready first, get him ready, then feed him and burp him, then change him again and we're out of here. We are so lucky that Adam loves his carseat (what we call his "bucket"). He can sleeeeeeep in his bucket so I can go out for 4 hours if need be (with no feeding) but I am always prepared should I need to feed him while out and about (which I would do in our car). I don't assume each time will be easy, but so far we've been lucky but I also attribute that to good planning. I call it the Baby Trifecta when he is full, is burped and has clean pants. I wouldn't take him out unless we started out with all those things in place. (Well, okay, so far I haven't had to take him out without reaching the trifecta but I'm sure emergencies come up.) This is just a comment on me personally, not on anybody else, but when I committed to being a stay-at-home-mom (and believe me, it is NOT easy for me not to be in an office because I love working in the corporate world and I miss my paychecks and camaraderie from it), but I know that God led DH and I to parent THIS BOY at THIS TIME, so for me I have to put his needs up really high -- even when I want to run simple errands to Target and the grocery store. I see a lot of kids in stores having meltdowns -- yes, I know ANY kid can have a meltdown, even mine -- but I suspect a lot of the toddlers I've seen having meltdowns have missed out on their nap. I want my son's experiences to be good, and I want him to know he can count on me (us) for his needs. I don't even know why I rambled on about all of that (sorry). I haven't really surprised myself in my dedication to our son (I knew I would be dedicated to him), but I am so glad that he does so well out in public because so much thought and care has gone into doing whatever we can to give us the best possible shot at having a good out-of-the-house experience with him. No wonder there are Mother's Days and Father's Days. I see that more this year than any other year in my whole life... Jeanie

I have to say that my breasts were full in the first week or so, but I have never had a "milk rush" or felt the milk coming in. Baby is 8 weeks/2 days old and nurses 7-8 times a day. Sometimes my nipples feel slightly tingly when I haven't fed in a while, but that feeling doesn't stick around and it's not enough to wake me up (I hear about women's breasts waking them up before their newborn does) or enough to bother me. Nine days for your milk to come in with your first, Sarah? Were you nervous about that or did you expect that it WOULD and were just happy that he had that yummy colostrum to hold him over? Jeanie

Plan extra time in to feed baby last thing before we leave...even if it is just a top off (although planning it to right after a full feeding time is best usually). Also my kids have all seemed to not really get that hungry when we are out...they tend to go longer without really needing to eat...but the next day they more then make up for that day of being out and about!!! I also plan on feeding as soon as we get home from wherever we went....Paul is great cause he deals with getting the other kids out of the car and settled, shoes taken off them and put away, groceries or whatever unloaded and put away...all while I usually feed the screaming baby...lol quote:

Were you nervous about that or did you expect that it WOULD and were just happy that he had that yummy colostrum to hold him over? it was totally not expected. The dr's were not happy with it (and thus I was not either). Jake lost a lot of weight because of it. He was born at 8lb 0oz, but got down to around 6lb 13oz or so (if I remember correctly...it could have been more, but that's the last number my brain remembers him getting down to). He was a long baby too (21½ inches long) so it was really skinny for him. They were very worried though they did allow us to go home with him. They only allowed it because we were prepared to bring him in for 3 or more weight checks a day and me come in for two hours a day to be on the hospital grade pumps to hopefully get it to come in faster (it didn't help though). We had family in town at the time, so being home was better for us then being stuck in the hospital and having to deal with all of that mess. It worked out though....and after my milk came in he gained weight pretty fast. By 14 days he was back to birth weight...and by a month he was about twice birth weight!!!! I stopped nursing him while pregnant with Hannah...and my milk never dried up so she never got colostrum, just straight to milk. Emma my milk came in before I left the hospital (and I was only in there for about a day after she was born)...so it was definitely much better that time!!! She stopped nursing when I was pregnant so Jack never had colostrum...same with this time, he stopped when I was nursing, so there is a chance this next one will go straight to milk too.

Good news! Jimmy drank 3oz. of milk in one sitting! We bought the drop-in Playtex Nurser bottle the other day. I've only been able to get him to take a few sips here and there with a sippy cup even cradling him with my boob showing and everything. But, today I held him and gave him the bottle and he took little breathing breaks but had 3oz! It didn't make him sleepy though. If I can get him to do that a few times a day, I can feel comfortable about cutting back on nursing.

Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers. The last couple of days have been busy but a little better pain wise. They still hurt in between nursings and feel a little sore during but nothing excrutiating. Of course, the weather's warmed up and that helps and I've learned to don my bathrobe while nursing at night and that helps too. I'm going to try wool breastpads and maybe calcium and vitamin B which I've also read can help with the blanching. He is still a great nurser. Yesterday we went to an AWANA's award ceremony for my older son and he nursed for a while during and then sat on my lap the entire rest of the time just looking around and cooing. Such a good boy!

Julie, glad things are a bit better. Hope it only improves more! Christina, that's great! Well, I would like some prayers. I'm about ready to give up. However, I still have a few things to try so I don't want to give up just yet...I'm afraid I'll always wonder "what if I had tried..." So I'll call the LC and see if she has some tubing for the SNS we talked about on my last visit. If not, I'll order one tomorrow. I'll also see if there's anything else she can suggest. If the SNS doesn't work, I'll go back to the doctor in Jackson around the end of next week. I found out she charges for both of us (which makes sense, but it doubles the cost for us)...I'm just hoping to cancel the appointment all together because Josie will start to nurse like a champ. Miracles do happen, right? I will need the desire and strength to do all this because right now I'm fading. Thanks for EVERYTHING, ladies!

Tammy, I don't know your story, do you know why your DD isn't latching well or is it still a mystery?

Julie, Tammy's baby had a cleft lip, but has had surgey and the stitches are out. She's been pumping this whole time. (((((Tammy)))) Like you said, you have some tricks up your sleeve. I'll be praying the SNS tube works. How has the fenugreek and reglan been working for you? I don't remember if you updated us on that yet. Hey, just think how easy it's gonna be when you nurse the next baby. By the time you wean Josie, you'll probably know everything. LOL!

Yep, what Sanda and Donna and Christina said! You've done an amazing job for your sweet babe. Be proud of yourself for all you've already done for her and all that you will do for her in the years to come. I pray for peace for you in whatever decision needs to be made. --Kat

Julie, I couldn't get her to nurse after surgery and wasn't able to work with her (and really didn't have it in me...post surgery was tough!) until she was stitch free. Now she has a STRONG nipple preference. And bless her heart, she's enjoying eating now, whereas before surgery eating was a struggle, even with a special feeder. Thanks ladies. I feel like God will give me peace but He hasn't yet even though *I* kind of want to quit. I ordered the SNS just a few minutes ago. It's likely the last effort unless I go back to the breastfeeding doctor. It turned out to cost more than we had planned so I pushed my appointment back, if I go back. I can't tell you enough how you ladies have helped!!! I'm in tears right now at the thought of how alone I would have felt these 5 months without you!!!!! Thanks for the prayers and encouragement. Christina, you're right!! I'll be one educated Mama next time! I might even help other mommies of cleft babies. There's a reason for all of this! The Fenugreek and Reglan are helping some but I am still pumping the same amount as before but I don't think the pump is able to get all of it...I seem more full after pumping than before taking the suppliments. Oh, and hubby said if she does latch on, we're going to let her nurse until she's 5 years old.

And money! LOL Seriosly, if I can get her to nurse, we'll probably do it 6 months longer than originally planned.

Ok I've got a question for you all. I just had enough HCG hormone this morning to test positive on a prego test. Well my 16 month old started feeding really odd last night and it was worse today. When ever my milk lets down he pops off and starts yelling at my breast and shaking his finger at it. Then proceeds to latch back on only to do the same thing seconds later. He then demands to be switched to the other and the same thing happens. My health department said that this was because the milk tastes funny to him because of the HCG. My question is - is this going to cause him to self wean or will he just become accostomed to the new taste? And if he becomes acquired to the taste will breastfeeding during pregnancy make my breast hurt more than a normal pregnancy does? My breasts hurt alot with my son's pregnancy. Thank you and looking forward to all your comments Stephanie

When I was nursing Hannah and pregnant with Levi, she acted angry at the new "flavor" also, but she was so attached to nursing that she got over it quickly. Depends on how attached they are, I would think. quote:

For me, I actually had much less breast pain while pregnant and nursing than I do while just pregnant. I think it's because the breast tissue doesn't need to change because it is already producing milk...that's my theory anyway. I did still have sore nipples when the new baby was born, and a regular adjustment period to a new nursling, including engorgement. But I also had a 2 year old to help with the engorgement.
