A fun poll question might be to ask when your baby/babies hit milestones--early or late or right on time? Or has that one been done before?

the problem with that question is that it is so relative that it's hard to say for some of us. It has been asked before though.....but I will ask it again if you want me to

I'm not sure how to vote, with three babies. Asrat and Gebre were average-to-late with walking and talking. Gebre was quite "late" talking. But other milestones they hit on time.

Biruk is hitting milestones a little earlier than I'm used to, especially in terms of dexterity, but I don't think he's way ahead.

What's the best way to treat a cough?
Judah's got a pretty bad cough - in fact he was up for two hours during the night and hasn't napped today because he just hacks away.
I tried putting him down for his nap and he lay there for a bit drinking his water, then started coughing on and off and fussed for about 40 minutes. When it turned to crying I went in to see him and he's sitting in the corner of his crib, head back, eyes closed, crying and coughing. It was so sad!
I've given him some lemon/honey water and that seems to help, but any other ideas?

On his feet? Really? What will that do Sarah?

I went to the healthfood store and got Mary some infants probiotics. That is what the lady there said would be best. It is a powder and so far she has done great taking it, I'm so impressed!

All of my babies have been early with everything. Levi was the latest walker...at 10 months. I have found that a good deal of the early/late stuff evens out by the time kids are 3 or 4 though, from watching my own kids and my friends' children who were later with some things. Sometimes I honestly envy those with later walkers...I have to chase my babies much sooner than they have to!

I dont know HOW, but I have heard that that works wonders! Vicks on my chest always helps MY cough. My cousin swears by putting it on her feet.

Lol, Donna. I finally learned it solidly when I was driving, but there are still times when I have trouble. And really, it was easiest when I learned "Port" and "Starboard" during my sailing days.

Were you in Sea Scouts or something like that, or did you parents have a sailboat? I was in sea scouts for a couple years in my teens. One of the most fun times I had in my life.

her dad was Navy...so she grew up a brat ....um, I mean "navy brat"

Oh, I am a brat, Micah would tell you so

Christina, I learned to sail from my Dad and because of the area I grew up in I spent most of my summer mornings(and some mornings when I should have been in school) sailing on the St. Mary's river. We always used the college sail boats. Sigh, it is so gorgeous down there. HERE is another picture.

Wow, that place is beautiful. I learned to sail in Aquatic Park in San Francisco.

You didn't have to make it a poll, it was just an idea. I knew it would be hard for people with more than one kid though.

Anyway, Levi has hit most "milestones" right smack on time (when the books say he will) but a couple, like rolling over, he has done early.

Hunter has been either early or right on target with his milestones according to the books. Walking was the one that took him the longest though I know 13 months is completely normal for babies.

My first was way behind on physical milestones. She didn't walk until 17 months. However, she was ahead on mental milestones. My second has been on target so far.

Jessica, a humidifier will help loosen the cough so it won't hurt his throat. If you don't own a humidifier, you can boil a very large pot of water, put Vicks in the water and put it in his room and close the door if he's still in a crib and can't get to the water. When he's in the living room area with you, just keep the pot of water on simmer with Vicks in it and keep adding water and Vicks throughout the day. Just try to keep your house humid today to help loosen his cough. And, do try the Vicks on the feet. I totally forgot to try it the last cold we all had.

I didn't really pay attention to if milestones were early or late. Isaac crawled at nearly 9 months, he was pulling up and cruising around furniture well before that. He walked on his first birthday. Started saying words around that time, too.

Isabel took off crawling at 6 months. Walked shortly after her first birthday. Has maybe 15-20 words now (16 months).

I can't even remember when either of them rolled over, LOL.

Didn't y'all say that stores had pulled all cough and cold meds off the shelf for young kids? I found some Tylenol cough and cold at the store - it says on the box for 2 and older or 24lbs and over.
Is it bad to give to littles?

It's fine, Jess. You just have to dose it by weight and if you're not sure, call the doctor and ask for the correct dosage. If Judah is over 24 pounds (I assume he is??), then just give him that dose, even though he's not two.

In my understanding, all the infant medicines were pulled off the shelves because parents and babysitters were too dumb to figure out how to dose properly for weight, not age. So instead of having companies put those doses on the packages, they pulled them. Some people also don't believe that they work on little ones, but I know they have for my kids. I do try to keep them to night time unless they are really miserable in the day too. Also, since your medicine has tylenol in it, make sure not to give any more tylenol (duh...you know that...but that is part of the dosing errors people have made ).

Wow...probably about the same as Levi. He caught up nicely for being such a little one when he was born!

I know!! About 12 months he suddenly shot up - he went from 3/6 and 6/9 month clothing at that time to mostly 18 month clothing!! It was a HUGE jump up in size.
Paul is so proud It's hilarious!

I can't really do the milestones either. DS1 hit verbal milestones WAY ahead. He and I were conversing when he was 1. He also knew numbers, most letters, shapes and colors around 13 months and a little older. He walked when he was 13 months but still can't ride a bike (he's 4) and didn't learn to jump off the ground with both feet until he was 3. DD was average on verbal milestones but hits most of her physical milestones early. Still doesn't know any shapes and colors but I haven't really bothered to introduce them much. She's also really high on language comprehension. I think I'll give DS2 a little more time before I start thinking about milestones.

Question - DS1 was put on strong antibiotics starting last night. Can I give him the same probiotics that I bought for myself? I think someone earlier posted that it was fine since it's something the body makes for itself but I thought I'd check. If so, what is the easiest way to administer it? Can I open the capsule mix it in his applesauce or something? I doubt that my texture sensitive boy will actually swallow a capsule.

I need some help with a diaper rash...I've never seen it like this before. He's never had a diaper rash his entire life, and now this is patchy, bumpy, red and white bumps. I suspect it might be yeast?
I've been using penaten ointment, and once in a while I'll just put cornstarch. Not sure what else to use.

Can somebody show me a picture of what a yeast type rash would look like?
