brandy.....if you do not plan to do any shots in the hospital, then you will have two months to read up on it all before the first "vax apt". The only thing (I think) that they typically do in the hospital is the Hepitis B vax...and you can read up on that before hand to decide if it's for you or not or when.

Depends on how you feel about the Hep B vaccine, which is "supposed" to be given as a newborn still in the hospital. You'll want to have read it and decided what you want to do before the 2 month well child check for sure, since that's when the first big bunch of vaccines are done.

I'd read it now, if you can. And underline or highlight the things that are important to you about each vaccine, so when you go back to look at them, you don't have to read the whole thing again, KWIM?

maybe it will move to the pile of "read while waiting for baby to arrive and not working"

Small victory! Jael slept all of last night (from the time we put her to bed in her crib in her room) without waking up! For the first time since we transfered her to her own room she didn't end up in our bed with us in the middle of the night!! I woke up around 5-6 am this morning wondering if she was ok because I'd not woken up for her. She was fine, of course...and this momma was so well rested that I got some major house cleaning done today!

Wanna come to my house??? Seriously!!! I'm so wiped on a daily basis that I'm lucky to remember to run the dishwasher! Today was worse than usual, though. Normally the kids are up and wired by 5am, so I have to get up too .... but this morning our dog decided she didn't want to wait until 5 ... and PEED ON MY BED!!! This was around 4am. It's bad enough waking up ahead of time ... but when you are waking to a soaked bed and having to get up right then to strip it and run the washing machine ... AARGH!!!!!

Awwww...I'm so sorry to hear about your dog ruining your sleep! Wow! 5 am...seriously how do you do it? I would go bonkers if I had to get up that early every day. What time do your kids go to bed?

They are in bed by 8:00, but usually don't fall asleep until 10 or later ... sometimes I can hear them up and playing in their rooms at 2am ... yet they are STILL awake by 5.

(And for those who don't know, the kids are 7, 5, 2 and 1 ... and I'm 6 mos pregnant with #5)

As for how I do it .... a nice pot of steaming hot tea in the morning!!! I don't go into functional mode until I've had two cups ... prior to that, I'm a zombie in the chair while the kids run circles around each other ....

The MMR is the one with the autism controversy right?

What's the advantage to delaying/singling out the others - simply less "stuff" in their system at one time? What can go wrong if you lump them together (not including the MMR)?

Again, wow! You're a champ! Do you discipline them for being awake and playing past their bedtimes?

For me personally...I like to know which vaccines my kids are reacting to. Sometimes they get fevers or other reactions (non-serious) and I feel that I can lessen their reactions and lessen the possible side effects by delaying vaccines.

I've tried several times ... but usually by that hour, they are easily outlasting me in the 'awake' department ... so we've basically told them it is fine if they play quietly in their rooms, BUT they are not to leave their rooms (other than for the bathroom), they are not to awaken anyone else, AND they must be cheerful the next day ... grumpiness is NOT allowed if they chose to stay up late. (It's one thing if they are up sick and grumpy the next day ... but because they chose to play ... NOT happening!)

And if they end up waking someone else because they got too loud, then they are forced to stand in a corner in our bedroom until they are so tired they can't do anything BUT sleep (plus they first have to soothe the awakened sibling)

Brandy, when I had my youngest the hospital did not pressure me at all to give the hep B vaccine in the hospital. I'm not sure it's that way everywhere though.

Right. Levi did not react well at all to vaccines and we had no idea which ones were causing the problem, or if it was simply the overload to his immune system. At this point, we plan to probably not do any vaccines until at least 3 or 4 months, and then only one at a time, starting with the ones we decide are most important (DTaP will be the first one done, alternating with Hib...one each month). The pertussis vaccine is not available on its own, but we had a pertussis outbreak here a couple years ago, so that is most important for us and the book confirmed what we were already thinking.

One thing the book says over and over is that for a breastfed baby who is not in daycare or church nurseries, the risk of getting a disease that is vaccinated for is very small.

We did not do the Hep B at birth with Levi and did not get any pressure either. I just had to sign a paper saying I didn't want him to have it. I'm sure there are hospitals out there who will give trouble about it though.

Mary did not get the Hep B at the hospital only because Medicaid would not pay for it. Nor are we able to get them at her check ups at the clinic. We have to go to the health department. So her shots won't start until 2 months age.

Our hospital didn't give us any trouble but most of the staff looked at me like I had 3 heads.

if y'all don't mind, could the vaccine discussion please be taken to it's own thread...it tends to take over, and I personally have convictions about vax's that others don't have and don't really feel like discussing it most times because of the negative responses I have had over the years on here when I do talk about it. So I would rather keep that one out of here.

Isabel cracked me up this morning. She came in to the room and was obviously doing her business in her diaper. She looked at me and said "Poo Poo!" very clearly. LOL! She says "diaper" very clearly, and has started saying "apple" as well. Isaac has started announcing everything she says. Yesterday in the car she was "counting" (just chatter, but it sounded like she was trying to say numbers). And Isaac announced "Isabel is saying counting". LOL! The other night she handed Isaac his cup and said "hee do". Isaac announced "Isabel said here ya go".

I ended up giving Jacob the regularly scheduled shots at his 2 month appointment and he had no negative reaction at all. I assume that likely means he wouldn't have any adverse reactions to any of the follow ups of the same vaccines?

I hate WIC. Well, I have a love hate relationship with the program. Gabby's 9 month appointment is today and I can't find her shot record, not that it would matter since it's not up to date anyway. I am so tired of the government's involvement in the choices I make for my child(ren). I can only imagine how bad it will get if we end up going to socialized health care

I have a love hate relationship with them too. Love the benefits...well most of them, we get so much stinkin' milk it's insane...but I hate the general air of thinking we're lower class because we use WIC kwim?

Isaiah cut his other top tooth finally...but there are at least 2 others fixin' to poke through.

Does the WIC staff treat you that way or are you meaning people in general?

Ryanne, I didn't realize they require vax records. I don't remember being asked for those. Or maybe I forgot they asked me?

Biruk is still being awful. I am wondering if he's teething, or maybe has an ear problem. Because he has been pulling on his ears, but I only see him do it once a day, so up to now it hadn't worried me.
Of course, it may jsut be a new stage of development. He is *screaming* when he wants something, screaming if I don't pick him up right away, screaming if I move him away from something he wants... At least he's still napping.

Staff mostly. Most of my military friends use WIC too, since most every junior enlisted family qualifies, so I don't get it much there.
It's just when I go in, a few of the staff members seem to look down their noses at the ones who are coming in.
I'm probably just sensitive LOL

WIC appts -- they require vax records here in OK and keep them on file with the state in their computer. I haven't had too much of a problem with them pushing me on any of them, though. They treat us pretty well, the only thing I dislike about the appointments is the "nutritional classes" we have to sit on a couple of times per year. I just don't agree with a lot of the government standards. So I just sit there and keep my mouth shut. But I am truly thankful for the benefits.
