what If she gets HUGE and doesn't fit and we have all this winter stuff in the fall when its not cold enough???

Brandy, I made the mistake of buying some baby clothes ahead of season... I now have a whole bunch of unworn baby clothes waiting for my next little girl.[&:]

AND if we are going to Texas at Christmas.. it will be just above freezing at night and 40s or 50's during day.. can she survive in a few layers and a hoodie and blanket??? I Dont want to buy her a winter jacket per se but I would if needed.

How old will she be at Christmas? 6 months? The only way I would buy a jacket for a baby that young is if she was going to be playing outside by herself (Mary was 6 months at Christmas and I didn't have a jacket for her then, we always used blankets.), otherwise if she is going to be in the cold she will probably be in her car seat covered by a blanket.

...does Texas actually get to below freezing?? I thought it was always hot there!

Brandy, one word: Layers. [;)] And two more words: Thrift stores [8D]

Between the two, you shouldn't have to worry. [:)]
A lot of baby clothes can work through at least three seasons, depending on how you use them. Especially if what you have is mostly basics (onesies, t's, etc).

Mrs.Wifey -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/18/2008 3:02:09 PM)

I tried buying ahead and it never worked quite right, so now I just buy as we go *unless* it's a deal that I just can't pass up. We never really used a winter coat because it's not safe in the carseat, we don't use ANYTHING thicker then a layer of fleece behind her or over her shoulders in the car seat. I have yet to find a certified car seat technician who thinks it's safe, so we just don't do it. We used a fleece jacket and then one of those fleece buntings over the top of her car seat. It has elastic edges so it stays on there pretty well.

I LOVE those socks, now I think I need some[:D]

PrincessDonna -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/18/2008 3:23:31 PM)

Hmmm...I never have trouble buying ahead for my kids. But then...they all seem to grow the same in our family and I've gotten used to how they grow.

PrudentWife -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/18/2008 3:24:56 PM)

Both of my kids have been the extremes......Reagan grew very slowly, Lincoln grew very quickly.

I've been burned buying clothes in advance, so I just don't do it anymore. Clothes are usually on clearance by the time you really need them anyway. Meaning, I'm sure the fall stuff will be on clearance for $2 by September, when the temperature starts to drop.

Brandy -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/18/2008 3:28:34 PM)

she will be like Shrek then, an onion with layers.

We won't do anything other than her base layer of clothes in carseat for same reasons you mentioned Ryanne.

I have been given some clothes that should fit her when it's the right season.. at some point in the season anyway.

I think I will be extra careful and really try to hit sales at the appropriate times. Until I know how she grows atleast. Then all bets are off. [8D]

oh , good smiley.. you guys do sunglasses? at what age?

not that we take her out in direct sun much yet but I saw the cutest picture of a little man wearing sunglasses and it got me wondering about Isabel.

SweetLittleErin -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/18/2008 3:32:24 PM)

I've been wondering about the clothes thing too. We were given a ton of clothes, but only up to size 6 months, with just a few 9 months. So we should have clothes to get him through the winter. I've been wanting to buy the summery stuff as it goes on clearance but have no idea what size I should buy. I saw the cutest cargo pants with button up shirt the other day for $3...but had NO IDEA what size to buy.

On the Baby Legs...I think they are such a cool idea...I totally want some.

Mrs.Wifey -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/18/2008 3:32:25 PM)

Gabby has had sunglasses since she was about 4 months old, she will leave them on if she is in the sun, but once she hits the shade she yanks them off. She wears THIS brand and we love them! They were a little big on her, but I just added some of that stick-on velcro and they fit perfectly.

ChelseaRae -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/18/2008 3:53:43 PM)

We use these and love them! Mary has to be busy and distracted to keep them on but they stay on great!

AngieCat -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/18/2008 4:21:35 PM)

Someone mentioned a swimming suit with flotation built in. I want to mention those kinds of suits give parents a sense of false security because unlike a life vest (red cross certified), these floating suits don't flip the baby/toddler right side up. So the baby can easily get stuck floating with their head down--- in the water. (What a horrible picture that is in mind.) Children with those suits need close supervision.

lexie -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/19/2008 10:12:33 AM)

We had so many people buy clothes for Akeelah and she wore so few of them.

She was in 6mos at 3 months, 12mos at 6 months, 18 mos at 9 months...you get the picture. At 1.5 years we have to buy her 3T, some things in 4T. It depends on where it's from though.

It's weird though because Akeelah wears the same size as my 3 year old niece, even in diapers. But my niece is skinny, and Akeelah has a belly and it seems a booty as well.

PrincessDonna -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/19/2008 7:39:38 PM)

Levi is having an "I don't want to keep my diaper on" day. We went swimming and Brian just put him in a new diaper on the way home. He had it off by the time we got home (5 minutes). I put it back on, then made some sandwiches. While I was making sandwiches, he climbed on top of the table, took it off again, and peed all over the table while laughing. Boys...[8|]

Levi has been very anxious around water, but he did well today. We don't go swimming too often and my SIL has tried to bring him in her pool, but he really needed Brian or I to help him feel secure. We put him in a life jacket, the kind with the thing behind his head so his head couldn't go under at all. He did great! By the end, I had him floating without one of us even touching him, and kicking his feet when the other kids would come near.

Hannah was a big fraidy cat last year when we went swimming, needing to cling to Brian or I. Today, I had to rescue her from too deep water because she wasn't afraid and just kept going out until it was over her head.[>:] When she had a life jacket on, she was doggie paddling and kicking like it was nothing. I can't believe the difference in her in just a year!

Sideways -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/19/2008 9:26:34 PM)

Go Levi and Hannah![:D] (About the water, not the diaper issues)

Brandy -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/19/2008 9:47:22 PM)

Ladies would you pay for a Mommy and Me class?

Meets for 8 weeks, 90 minutes per week and it's all about learning about your baby, bonding and helping him/her develop. The group stays the same, there are no late comers, so you bond with your group as well.

If you could afford it, at $320 for the full 8 weeks would you?

Brandy -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/19/2008 9:48:56 PM)

Ok Donna, do girls do that??? I cannot imagine what I would do if my child did that on the table!! I'd have trouble not laughing him to his room.

Go Hannah for no fear but geez that's kind of scary now.

Lexie I love how Akeelah doesn't fit the norm for clothing sizes for her age, cracks me up when you talk about her booty.

EmilyAnn -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/19/2008 10:18:53 PM)

I wouldn't pay for it. I went to a free Mommy and Me meeting on Wednesday and it was nice, but I wouldn't pay for it. For that much money I would feel like I had to go every week because I paid for it, even if David or I was having a bad day. Newborns are so unpredictable. Sometimes at 10:00 (when the meeting is) he is awake and happy, sometimes he is just waking up and fussy, and sometimes he is asleep. I wouldn't want to make that kind of commitment right now.

Not for mommy and me, but we have/will pay for Gymboree classes. They are about $70 a month...

I wouldn't...that's $40 a week! I'd rather hire someone to clean my house, if I could afford it, that is.[;)]

Seriously though...unless you desperately need connection with other woman and have no other way of getting that...no. And if you are that desperate, I'd call your church and see what they have available.

Well, sure girls go through a naked phase too, but my boys seem more enthralled by peeing all over than Hannah did...probably because they can see the little "hose". LOL

Can't imagine what you would do? Well...you'd let them finish, because moving them in the middle of a pee would make a bigger mess. Then you'd sternly say, "No. NO. Diaper ON." and move them off the table. THEN you'd grab a dirty towel and mop up most of it and then spray some antibacterial cleaner on the table and clean it up. And then proceed to serve dinner on said table.[8D]

Yeah...she's been in SIL's pool (one of those 3.5" Walmart ones) quite a bit lately, so I guess she thought the lake would be all one depth?? She'll be wearing a life jacket the whole time when we go to the lake again. She didn't panic though...just said, "Mom??!!" as the waves kind of went over her. I was right next to her, just didn't realize the waves were making the water go over her head.[&:]

My dh would faint if I just mentioned that amount in passing. [8D]

I think brand new moms underestimate their mothering abilities. [;)] And if you really do feel like you need some help, you can connect with other moms and more experienced moms through church things or MOPs or something.

I think Biruk finally has his first word. He goes to find one of the many bouncy balls we have around the house, and then carries it around proudly shouting "Baaa!! Baaa!!". If we say "Say Ball!" he will repeat "Baaa!" so I think that's it.
He is really climbing now. Anytime anyone sits at the table, he has to be right up there with them. He's mastered the chairs and the bench, and so I finally gave in and let him sit on the bench next to his brothers at supper time now. Unfortunately, it's very distracting to have him clambering up and looking over our shoulders if we are working on school or writing checks or something. [8|]

Sideways -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/20/2008 8:25:13 AM)

I do a toddler gym thing, about twice a week (or more if I want to), and it's about 85 per month. For me it's about getting out of the house, letting Nathan play and burn energy in an air-conditioned space and meeting other moms. We have fun with it, and I can take niece with me as a free guest, so we enjoy cousin time as well.

It's not about feeling insecure as a mom, it's about going nuts inside the house and overheating outside the house, and there's only so many times you can go to Target to spend time. We also go to the Library reading hour for free.

If it fits easily into your budget, I say go for it. But don't take the developmental stuff to seriously. Emily has a very good point that if you aren't sure when the baby will be sleeping/happy/fussy whaterver, you may want to be cautious. If you're pretty certain about the babe's schedule, then go ahead.

We went to Old Navy one day when she was about 15 months. I bought her clothes in 2T and had to go back the next day and buy bigger sizes. When we realized we had to buy some outfits in 4T because we couldn't get them over her bum, I yelled to no one particular "I don't know who they are making these clothes for, but my daughter has a black girl booty and this store just won't do!" My husband tried to hide among the racks.[:D]

I wouldn't pay that much for a Mommy and Me class, but that's because we have drop in centres here for those particular classes and it is all free. I enjoyed the classes and it helped me meet other moms in the neighbourhood, but at that much money I wouldn't have felt I got my money worth. I didn't learn anything I hadn't already heard or read, except for some songs and rhymes.

At the same time if that is the only option for a Mommy and Me class and it's something you will enjoy and want to do, then the price may be worth it.

Brandy -> RE: Baby Chat (take 3) (7/20/2008 10:34:36 AM)

Jeremy says it's up to me because we can afford it..

BUT I had totally forgotten about Gymboree!!! and MOPs

SO this week is going to be using my mother to her full capacity in running around and checking these things out with me.

She also gets to be the official first babysitter as we may go test drive a few cars next weekend as well.

Cappy - Your describe of your little one is adorable. I can't wait until Jadon gets to that phase!

Brandy - I am so glad for you! Yay for helping coming!
