Kristin, I am also confused. I would not worry, but I would call back and find out how dilated and effaced you are. You could just be one of those women whose body starts early. There are those whose cervix soften up early and are partially dilated for weeks, and there are those whose cervix are high, hard, and closed right up until labor begins. Once you get to 34 weeks, the risk of preemie problems decreases significantly anyway, and then 37 is considered full term. My sickie baby who was sent to the NICU was almost 41 weeks, so even full term is no guarantee. God knows the day your baby will be born. Trust Him.

EP, I agree with Sarah...to a point. The kick count is recommended for a reason, but you also have to know what is normal for your baby. If you have never gotten a regular kick count, I'd not worry. But if you have in the past or your Momma instinct has you concerned, then ask for a BPP ultrasound...that's a biophysical profile ultrasound and they'll look for some specific things to see how baby is doing...it measures movement, increases in heart rate with movement (nonstress test), muscle tone, breathing rate, and the amount of amniotic fluid. So don't worry, but OTOH, don't ignore your instinct if you feel something is wrong.

Erin, glad you're appointment went well. Isn't it just the best feeling when the baby won't cooperate because he's/she's too wiggly??

Kristin, I was wondering the same as Kim - maybe she was measuring the fundal height? Did they do an internal or just measure the outside of your belly with the tape or both? It does seem weird that she'd be checking your cervix already. I only had mine checked once and they only did it b/c I already had to undress for the GBS.

Egypt, I'm sorry you're feeling so yucky. I do agree with Sarah and Donna though. Not every baby fits in the little average baby mold.

Well, had my 38 week appt today. They want me to come back Thursday b/c they thought my BP was high. I guess it was high for me, but I didn't think it was that high. My usual is about 110/70. Today was 120/90. They are concerned about the bottom number. No protein in the urine or anything, so if it's still the same on Thursday does it really matter?

Lily, you are so close! They may want to monitor you for a while to check on the baby, but if it doesn't go higher, they will probably wait. All depends on your doctor, of course.

Thanks, Donna. I wonder what they would consider too high? Like you said, it probably depends on the doctor. Maybe I can have dh check it a few times at home before Thursday in case I get performance anxiety on Thurs. just because I'm there. That's no way to help blood pressure - you'd better have low blood pressure on Thursday or else! (okay, they didn't say that... but that's how I feel)

The deal with hbp is that it can turn into pre-e, or full eclampsia literally over night. At 38 weeks they will probably just monitor it, do NST's and if it keeps rising they probably won't let you go over 40 weeks. No biggie really, at this point.

The "thinking" is that your bottom number is more indicative of high blood pressure then the top number, which is why they were concerned. The "cut off" for pre-e is 140/90 on more then 3 occasions, so they probably just want to see if it was a fluke or not.

Okay. Thanks, Ryanne. Assuming it is not pre-e related, is there anything I can do to help it stay low? I do exercise and I think I heard potassium might help? (maybe I should skip that half cup of coffee Thursday morning too)

Yeah, I would cut caffeine but NOT salt. Potassium and Calcium are rumored to work, but the Pre-E foundation does not agree, lol.

Okay, I can do that. Maybe I'll do the gatorade thing since it has sodium (and potassium just in case). Anyway, I know I'm far enough along that all will be fine, but I'd really like to avoid induction! Of course, when it comes down to it, in the end I just want a healthy baby.

And drink lots and lots of water.

My doctor put me on partial bed rest when my BP spiked at the end last pregnancy. He also said not to go overboard on the salt/sodium, but I didn't need to cut it out completely.

I do try to drink a lot of water, but I may have been slowing down b/c of the constant night time pees. I'll have to watch that. Also, we did have Mexican for dinner last night - it was SOOO good, but was more salt than I usually eat. I guess it is important make sure to get enough sodium, but not TOO much.

Okay, lots of water, some sodium, maybe potassium... and skip the coffee and the Mexican before doctor's visits! I think that is the plan.

I am back.

To answer questions first, she did both the fundal height which measures me 2 weeks ahead and an internal exam, which said my cervix has really softened and shortened. Her exact words were, I am a little concerned because we have you at 30 weeks, yet your cervix feels like you should be around 36 weeks. It is still closed, but has shortened and softened. The reason she checked me(I guess) was because I told her I have had a lot of pressure lately and my stabbing pains are back in my vagina. Because I was so not expecting to have a "exam" today. It got me all flustered! I need to mentally prepare myself for that!!!
She had mentioned another test she was going to get me to take but since I had had sexual relations in 24 hours she said she couldn't do that one... I can't remember the name of it. Any guesses???

So now on to the specialist I went to see. First let me tell you I got a 3D u/s done. Which is a blessing because I was going to look into getting one done, which I knew we couldn't afford. But anyways, the dr. gave me yet another new due date of June 22nd. He said he couldn't figure out how they orginally came up with July 12th. But he said it was up to my dr. to actually change it. We have a really big baby right now, he is in the 86th precentile. His head is measuring 5 weeks ahead, stomach is measuring 2 weeks ahead and he weighs almost 5lbs now. The dr. said if we are going with his due date, my cervix is no big deal, and really not that big of a deal if she keeps the July 12th due date. But that she needs to keep a watch on me and the baby and his growth.

I really still don't quite understand the entire cervix thing, but I am trusting in God. I am a little freaked out if I am due 3 weeks sooner than expected....that means I have a lot to do!!

I am off to take a nap, today has emotionally worn me out.

Thanks for listening ladies.

Lily - praying for you...

Eygpt - also praying for you, try not to worry. God will take care of you and your little one!!

You might also try to make your appointments in the morning. My BP always seems to be lower first thing in the morning and higher by evening.

Maybe the GBS (Group B strep) test? It's a vaginal swab, though I have never been asked when the last time I had sex was for that test.

Are you sure of your dates? Your last due date and/or the date you believe you conceived? If you're sure of your dates, could be just a big baby. (Welcome to the big baby club! It's not a problem...it's a good thing!) If you're not sure of your dates and could be off by a few weeks, then maybe that's why your cervix is changing already. Honestly though, I would not worry about softening and shortening at this point. Maybe it just means you won't have to go the full 40 weeks, but still full term. I'd be packing your bag in the next couple/few weeks though, just in case!

Perhaps the Fetal Fibronectin test? It determines if you are likely to go into labor within 2 weeks.

Wow, Kristin - how confusing! I'm glad you got to see your little one though! It's weird that the date would be so off - I mean if they are using lmp I could see them getting the date wrong and making you due sooner than you really are (if you ovulate late), but I haven't usually heard of them getting it so far off the other way around... maybe like Donna said - just a big baby. I really don't know about the whole cervix thing though.

Ryanne - that is it, that was the test! Thanks!

Donna - we were never sure of my dates, I know I took Clomid the first week in October but after that have no clue, because the dr. said that round didn't make me ovulate so I should look into surgery...so I stopped temping and timing things thinking I would start back up after surgery.

Who knows, I will just be going with the flow...

If you're not sure of dates, then I bet that's it. I'd plan on a June baby, if I were you. Did they not do a really early ultrasound? My doctor does those if there is any doubt of the due date, because ultrasound for dating purposes is really only reliable in the first trimester.

Lily,

Usually if they suspect pre-e, they will make you lie down for a while and retest your bp to see if it goes down.

do they know for sure that you didn't ovulate? You would be about the same as me if that new date is correct, and my ovulation date is around Oct 3rd.

Anyone else breaking out? I usually don't have many pimples, but now I'm getting at least one once a week. I'm trying to stay away from sweets, so I don't know if it's hormonal or what.

Normally my face breaks out in cycles...along with my cycle. In general, it's been a lot better since pregnant. I still get occasional breakouts, but they're much less than normal.

Lily- I'm glad your shower went well! All those diapers will be a huge blessing. And I vote that you can beat the other lady...I bet you can get Caden out in an hour. And for your BP...the 90 is a little high. Probably a good idea just to get it rechecked in a couple of days.

Kim- Not many more weeks of belly pictures to take!

Kristin- I'm glad things are looking ok. I'm sure you have lots to do, but you might be getting your baby 3 weeks sooner!

Egyptian- I was on amoxicillan for a UTI at the beginning of my preg. It's a pregnancy category B, so you're ok. I hope it starts working for you soon.

We starting registering yesterday. It was kind of speed-registering, because dh had to meet with some clients so we only had about an hour. It was pretty fun though. I had made a wish-list online going off of reviews, so that helped a lot. We will either need to go back or add a bunch of stuff online. They didn't have the bedding set I want there, which stinks, because I really wanted to see it in person. Half of me wants to just ditch the idea of the bedding set anyway, but I'll probably end up putting on the registry and just see what happens. 19 weeks tomorrow!

Lily - I'm glad that they're watching your BP. Hopefully it was just a fluke! When it comes to pre-e/e, though, it's great that they're watching out for you.

Kati - I can't believe you're 19 weeks tomorrow!! And that Kathryn's 20 weeks!! Your pregnancies are flying by!! LOL

Kristin - sounds to me like you did ovulate with that round of clomid and that you're a little further along than anticipated! (Fun and yet terrifying!!) Time to pack that bag and get ready for baby!! (BTW, I thought your belly shot that you posted earlier didn't much make sense for your due date ... just had the feeling that you were further along than they thought!)

Sherry - sorry to hear about the infection! About the kick-counts, I wouldn't be terribly concerned. Pick a time of day when baby seems most active and use that as your hour - sometimes I go for quite a while without feeling movement and then June Bug won't stop moving for hours ... as long as the baby is moving the same amount he/she always has!

Well, Brad and I went through all the stuff we got at my shower - holy cannoli! We've got a tonne of sleepers and onesies ... and bibs coming out of our ears!! LOL We are so blessed! We need a few more things for cloth diapering, but not too much for newborn - I think we're set for those sizes! We took out all the tags and have everything in a rubbermaid container ready to be washed and put away (as soon as I settle on what type of detergent I want to use!). I think one of my favourite gifts is a Clifford (ie. the Big Red Dog) blanket/play mat that's got a dog head and tail!!! It's *the* cutest thing ever and rolls up and velcros into a tube that's got the head at one end and the tail at the other. Must. Take. Picture.

We got our co-sleeper on Friday and we're going to be setting it up this week! I've also got to remember to put together the rest of my homebirth kit, since it needs to be done by 36 weeks and that would be a week and a half. People, where is the time going???!?!??

*cough* I've-also-got-to-pack-a-'just-in-case'-hospital-bag-still *cough*

lily,

It's not *that* high, but it is high for you, and that is why there is concern. Any change from what is *your* normal could be significant, and it's not worth taking any chances. They will be wanting to monitor it very closely to see what happens.

Oh and btw, IIRC, being calm or whatever only affects the first number (systolic), not the second number (diastolic). That's why they pay more attention to a raised diastolic - it's not prone to being affected by one's emotional state.

The best way to get your diastolic down is BED REST. As near as total.

Nothing else will bring it down.

thanks ladies.. well I did end up leaving work and coming home to sleep....and my GYNO ended up calling me after all around 5:30.. he told me not to worry about the antibiotics... but wants me to go in to the hospital tomorrow for an ultra sound. THe secretatry is supposed to call me tomorrow morning and let me know....my gutt tells me everything should be ok....but . if they do offer the u/s.. I have to admit.. I won't say no.... since I haven't really gained much weight and I am not REALLY REALLY showing that I am pregnant... I would love for them to look and say that the baby is growing fine...kwim?? so I would probably go for it... if they don't offer it.. then I will not be so worried about the kick count... I mean I feel my baby move a number of times an hour....so it means baby is still happy in there?!

I woke up from my nap and my right eye is red and had some sleep in it.. I *PRAY* I am not getting pink eye!.. seriously... I haven't had any pregnancy related illnesses.. but now all of a sudden I am falling apart!...

Please God.. just keep my baby safe..two and half months more...

AT least my new boss was nice to me and actually begged me to go home today...and I will probably stay home tomorrow. The pastor's wife made me some chicken soup so its been nice.. although I didn't really taste its flavour.. I put lots of lemon in it to sooth my throat and it was nice an warm.... Church family is such a blessing!

Thanks for your comfort ladies.. I never realized how precious it is to be part of this forum!

Thanks heaps
Sherry
