No, I don't. We named Nadia for my russian grandmother. Nadia is russian, but there are no Nadia's in my family. We did it as a 'pointing' to her heritage. I think using Willem would be a wonderful way to honor your dad, your husbands heritage and give your son his OWN name. It would be his and not have to worry about shouting William and having grandpa, son and cousin come running. I think it would be a very beautiful way to combine all the meanings.

I was supposed to drink lots of water, but I didn't. No one complained.

Had my appt today and my BP was 124/84. They are happy with that, so I am back to once a week visits! :o) The OB looked at my birthplan and said it looks good too. Yay! I never had to drink for any u/s. I think it just depends on the preference of whoever is doing it. Kim, I think Willem is great - it is unique, but would still be a great tribute to your dad. Donna and Sherry, so sorry you're having trouble sleeping! I usually sleep like a log, but last night had trouble sleeping after my 3:30 pee. Then I was getting contractions (nothing bad) until I got up. Here is an interesting tidbit in case anyone else wants to try - when we were ttc we used evening primrose to help with cm. Well, the midwives at my practice recommend taking it orally during the day and vaginally at night once you hit 38 weeks. They said they have seen a big difference in labors with women who use it. It is supposed to help ripen up the cervix. Anyway, we're going to try it. They say not to take it before 38 weeks though.

ORIGINAL: purejoy Erin, my exact directions are: 1. Void to empty bladder 2. Finish drinking 4- eight ounce glasses of water ONE HOUR BEFORE your scheduled exam time. Drink WATER, no other liquids. 3. If you are at 33 weeks or more, you need to drink only 24 ounces of water. 4. DO NOT VOID after drinking water Ok, I guess 4 glasses isn't too bad. But for me to drink all that in the time I get up and have to go to my appointment will not be fun. Like I said...makes me gag thinking about it. Especially because it's water. Juice or something I might be able to do. Eh, how will they know anyway? that's excessive IMO/E...esp for the number of weeks you will be for the U/S quote:
Do you think it would be doing my dad a disservice if we used the Dutch (hubby's Dutch) version of his name for our son? if you and hubby both don't care which one, then ask your dad what his opinion is or which he would prefer. (My hubby's brother was named "Greg" and we went with "Gregory" for Jake's middle name for his memory but not being named right after him.)

I started taking 1000 mg EPO and 960 mg RRL twice a day on Monday (35 weeks.) I tried inserting one vaginally at night, but I get up to pee so often that it just falls out. There is another way to get prostaglandins near the cervix, which seems to work better for me. LOL

A good friend suggested using the Dutch form of William - Willem - which would avoid the whole "liam" issue entirely. Do you think it would be doing my dad a disservice if we used the Dutch (hubby's Dutch) version of his name for our son? I don't think it's a problem at all. If we ever have a boy one of his middle names will be Emerick after Micah's grandfather. His grandfather went by Frank for his entire life, but I'm sorry, I am NOT naming my child Frank. Emerick is what is on his Marine Corps serve record, so that's why we chose it... Lily, not to burst your bubble but I used EPO faithfully for weeks(as soon as we knew I would be induced early) and the only good it did was to stain some of my panties. I know TONS of women who have used it, and 98% of them don't think it did anything I did it orally and vaginally and still spent 17 hours in labor, 29 total including the time they spent "ripening" my cervix. Also, you can take it before 38 weeks, you just don't take as much of it.

You already have a family history of going early and you are trying to get this baby to come even earlier then that? Do you KNOW what can happen when a baby comes too early? there can be all sorts of problems...and especially considering the fact that you want to do a home birth!!!! There is NO WAY I would be taking the life of a human being into my hands like that!!!!! Esp since your mom already is out of commission right now. What does your MW say about this? IMO 35 weeks is TOO EARLY to be encouraging your baby to come already!!! There are reports that suggest that things like that don't do any good anyway, but especially with your family history of earlier babies I wouldn't be encouraging anything to happen that early on!!!! Until you are far enough along to be ready for that baby and he be ready for this world, you shouldn't be encouraging your body to come earlier. If you want to know the things that can happe in a 35 week baby, just ask Jessica....I am sure she can give you lots of info on it and the NICU that her son was in for over a week because he was born early.

EPO and RRL prepare the body for labor. They do NOT cause labor to start. Both are safe to take at 35 weeks. My midwife and OB know what I am taking. I am FULLY aware of what can happen in a baby born at 35 weeks. I do not appreciate the tone of your post or you accusing me of "taking the life of a human being into my hands." I do not need to be yelled at or lectured like a child. I have done my research and discussed this with my midwife. I' m going to take a break from Crosswalk for a while because I am very upset right now.

no offense was meant in that post Emily....but honestly, until you are to full term( 37 weeks) then you shouldn't be encouraging your body like that. I know that those things don't start labor (I even said that in my post) however they can make your body too ready too early which CAN start labor earlier. You can be offended if you want to, but I have been on the bad side of a labor before and had to deal with the life and death struggle of what my baby was going through because of it...and I wouldn't wish those types of problems on anyone. IMO until 37 weeks you don't need to be encouraging anything to happen too early.

Well, for the last few days I've been getting very faint, almost unreadable results when I take a pregnancy test, but now I'm a week late. So you think they'd be more clear right? I finally broke down and bought a more expensive digital test, where a screen reads either "pregnant" or "not pregnant". And mine read "pregnant". I'm still a bit puzzled why the earlier tests were so very faint, but I went ahead and called my doctor to set up my 8 week checkup. I'd rather not be on the list at this point, as it all feels rather... fragile to me. Oh, I'm happy, don't get me wrong. But I'm sorta in a fog, too. Nathan was up a lot last night, so if he goes down for a nap, I think I might join him. Silly nurse said to wean Nathan as soon as possible, as it might bring on premature labor. I think I'll go right ahead with the gentle weaning schedule that I already had in mind. Assuming this baby "takes" (and I have the most forbidding feeling that it might not), then Nathan will have to stop being the baby of the family soon enough. Hope he forgives me.

Actually if you nurse all the way through then your body will be used to that sensation and nipple stimulation will have no affect on labor. Congrats !!!! (let us know when you want to be added to the list officially)

Cute pic Purejoy! You have a cute little round belly. When I had my ultrasounds they just told me to come with a full bladder for the earlier ones. There weren't any other instructions. So I came with a relatively full bladder but not so full I was uncomfortable, and they were able to see everything just fine. For my 20 week ultrasound they didn't say anything about it so I didn't have a full bladder for that and they didn't say anything about it. I had my doctors appointment on Tuesday. I called and had them add an extra 15 minutes to my appointment so I could talk to my dr about my birth plan (for those of you who don't remember I had heard some disturbing things about my doctors birthing philosophy). I typed out a very detailed birth plan and brought it with me. I was really nervous about it because I do not like confrontation at all. But my dr was really good about it. She read over the whole thing and wrote in little notes in the margins and then went over it in great detail with me. She basically she told me that she prefers to do things certain ways (such as continuous monitoring) because even though it's extremely rare that something will go majorly wrong during the times you aren't on the monitor the one time it will happen is one time too many in her oppinion. But then she went on to say that that was all just her oppinion though and that she will allow me to do whatever I decide to do. She will just make sure that I am well informed of the risks and benefits. I told her that I could deal with that as long as I still have the option of making the final decision. She said absolutely and signed my birth plan and stuck it in my records without me even asking her to. I was quite impressed with her. She was very thourough and very friendly the whole time. Usually she is very business like and is in the room less than 5 minutes, this time she spent a whole hour with me! So I will be staying with her as my doctor, I'll just have to make sure DH and I are well informed and educated on what we want. She also did the GBS test. That was no fun! But at least it's over with. I don't know if they will call me with the results or if they will just tell me at my next appointment. I'm kind of curious to find out if I have it. She checked my cervix since she was down there anyways. She said that the baby is head down and in position. She could clearly feel the top of the head so I don't know if that means the baby has dropped and engaged, or if she's still floating a little ways above my cervix. She said it could be sooner rather than later, but that I was still completely closed so then again it could still be a ways off. I have a question. On my birth plan I said that I wanted the baby handed to me right away and that I didn't want the cord clamped until it stopped pulsing. She said that I would have to choose one or the other there. She said that they have to keep the baby level with the placenta until the cord is clamped because if she hands me the baby and the baby is higher than the placenta, there's actually a risk of the baby becoming anemic because the blood will flow the other way back to the placenta. So she said either they will clamp it right away and hand me the baby, or they will let the baby lay between my legs until they are able to clamp the cord. Does this make sense to you guys, or do you think she was just trying to scare me? I see how that would make sense, but at the same time, if the cord is pulsing, it seems like the blood would still be forced towords the baby. But I don't know.

Ruth! Congrats! Thanks for all your thoughts, ladies!! Chelsea - we're assuming we'll call him "Will", but I don't want to feel like I can't call him William ... I quite like Willem, too ... I like that it's unique - especially because William is so popular these days! quote:
if you and hubby both don't care which one, then ask your dad what his opinion is or which he would prefer. LOL - that'd definitely be a "I don't care!" answer HOWEVER, my dad got teary when we told him we wanted to name our firstborn son after him, so maybe he would care! Good idea, Sarah! About the EPO @ 35 weeks - I wouldn't be comfortable doing it just because I'd be concerned that if the cervix was very ripe and there was trauma and extra BH that turned into labour or some vigorous nipple stimulation that caused contrax that wouldn't go away ... yeah. BUT as long as your m/w and OB are okay with it, then it's an option! Kati - I love your belly!!! It's too cute! Adria - Yay for a wonderful OB appt! How fantastic that she could spend some good time with you and validate how you feel! I'm happy for you! About the cord - it's definitely not true that they can't have the baby born up onto your stomach/chest with the cord still attached ... the only reason they couldn't is if baby has a very short cord. In my community, the standard of care is to give the cord 2 - 3 minutes before cutting it unless there's a reason to (ie. very tightly around baby's neck or too short to allow baby to be born fully, need for intensive resuscitation, etc.) and many babies are born up onto mom's tummy/chest, so I would be advocating to get both!
