Wow,
I was not trying to open the can of worms I seem to have here. Kernsfamily, thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking for.
I'm not trying to say Christians should only workout in"Christian" gyms.
As was pointed out, I am a powerlifter, and many "hardcore" lifting gyms
promote steroid use and other negative things. I am just trying to provide alternatives for folks that are looking for such.
If you are A Christian training at a "secular gym" and perhaps being a witness, even just by haviong a good attitude, great. More power to you and God Bless.

Christianiron.com;

For years, here in California, I've seen Lord's Gym t-shirts at powerlifting meets. I always thought it was a single location. I was talking to one of my ex-PL training partners over the weekend and he informed me that Lord's Gym has over a dozen locations via franchises. You might want to contact them about a link.

women have an obsession with professionals. at least, most do. they seem to always value a doctor's opinion over anyone elses. they are always the one that will suggest counseling in a marriage problem instead of telling the couple to solve it on their own. etc...

Not all women have an obsession with professionals. I only see my doctor if I'm about to die and it's taken me about 10 different doctors to find one whose opinion I actually trust. As for counseling, women just recognize that they don't have all the answers

As for Christian gyms... I have yet to find one, but it is possible to find smaller ones with a good atmosphere that even allows powerlifting, like the one I worked in for a good amount of time.

yeah thats why i said most.

and i guess it depends on the marriage. most would be better off with counseling but if i ever get married im pretty sure if it reached the point of needing counseling the counselor would just not help. idk how to explain it really *shrugs* but thats years later anyway so who cares

Just don't make assumptions. There are alot of marriages that have been saved by having a third party to help work through things.

But this is rather off topic, lol.

Stella - I have a question, please.

With the machines that you plug your headphones into, what are you listening to? i.e., A local radio station? This is a sincere question. It's been a while since I've been to a public gym (long before people started wearing headphones).

I don't know of any Christian gyms, but Bally's has a women-only workout room. That was kind of nice not having to worry about guys staring at my backside on the stairmaster.

whats a stairmaster? the elliptical machine?

i thought most girls did that to have guys watch . i didnt know there were girls that actually took it seriously.
Are you serious? That's an, uhm, interesting supposition you have there. Quite incorrect, misguided and a few other things; but nonetheless interesting.

There are multiple channels...most of which are television. The gyms here have banks of televisions, so you just pick which one you want to watch and pick the corresponding number on your machine. There is also the piped in gym music, which also includes information about classes and "inspirational" messages. There's usually a member's choice channel that can be changed any time, so if you wanted to put on a Christian channel you would be able to do that.

I go to Lifetime Fitness and the only machines that have built in headphone jacks are the recumbent bikes with the tvs built in

So you can watch local tv or the lifetime channel (ha ha) or listen to their really bizarre mix of music. You can use a radio to listen to the big screen tvs on the walls too which show the major networks + cnn + msnbc.

I wanted to join a gym. But my wife persuaded me instead to use the exercise bike in our basement.

I wasn't actually aware that there were so many touchy-feely issues involved with the simple act of using a gym. (What it someone is offended? what if I am offended? Do we really have to go into all that?)

depends on what you want the gym for. if you just want to be healthy and you already arent too underweight or overweight then really almost any gym should be fine for you(and maybe not necessary..)

personally i want to get stronger, and as fast as my body can adapt. if you have gym trainers(!, not gym goers) coming and telling you all the time what you are doing will kill you, injure you etc.(which it doesnt really. i only do one thing that may injure me and thats because of an imbalance that im tyring to fix) but instead tell bravo all the time to others that barely do anything hard, well it just annoys you.

and you need to be in a good, encouraged mood to lift. its not that the mood actually makes you stronger, it just lets you focus best and that makes you stronger

I think part of why this turned into such a discussion is; I (and it could have been an error on my part) took christianiron.com to mean a Christian (hardcore) Gym. I came to that conclusion, after looking at christianiron.com the website. Many of the people here, appear to work out at health clubs or fitness centers and have probably never set foot into a "real" gym. So their reference point is probably very different from mine (sort of like my reference point of driving on a Southern California freeway and that of a NASCAR driver).

Maybe a better analogy would be reading a book. If someone here said, "I'm thinking about starting a Christian Book Club", many could respond with similar comments "why do you need a Christian one. I just read books I like and don't pay attention to what others are reading" or "it doesn't really matter what the book is about, we'll discuss the book from a Christian view". So in regards to the former, the whole point of a Book Club is about participating not ignoring. Same thing can be said for more serious gyms. It's near impossible to just go in and do your thing and ignore everyone else, when at some point, you're going to be attempting a 300, 400, 500 lb bench and are going to need spotters. As for the latter, though the goal may be to view a book from a Christian standpoint, many of us wouldn't find much enjoyment in reading some trashy or gory book to discuss. Like wise with some of the music, dress and attitude in most (hardcore) gyms.

Wow,
I can't believe this thread is still going. Let me restate what my intentions were/are, please. While I personally consider myself a "hardcore lifter", I like to encourage all those that have the courage to get off the sofa and do ANYTHING of a physical nature. Some are just trying to lose some weight, some to increase heart/lung health, others to become champions in a given sport.
Why promote Christian gyms, trainers, sporting groups? Here is a list of the possible reasons: ( at least in theory)
No steroid promotion
Nobody hogging equipment
No snake-oil salesmen
No "meat-market" atmosphere
No arrogant people with horrible. self interested attitudes
Even high level lifters and bodybuilders encourage newbies or "out of shape" folks rather than beliitle them and make them feel small

Except for nobody hoggin equipment, you could be describing my little gym. Ladies will get on there and just sit forever between sets (and it's certainly not like they're lifting so much they need to rest!) or just chit chat. And it's a small gym so there's only one of each machine. Drives me crazy.
