Here's a form of legalism I've been taught. I was taught that if I had any unconfessed sin, that God wouldn't here my prayers and I wouldn't have fellowship with Him. To me that is totally legalistic and hypocritical. It would be naive of one to say they don't have any unconfessed sin. It would be naive and self-righteous for one to believe he's "good enough" to fellowship with God and to be used by Him. To me, that doctrine is very legalistic. I'm not suggesting an anything goes gospel, but I also know I'm not perfect. I no longer strive to be perfect. or "good enough".

I can't either.
Even going one extra mile for someone I disapprove is difficult for me, if not impossible, much less agape-loving.
So, if I can't and you can't, for us to tell somebody to do what we can't can only be legalistic, saying of the letter that kills.
Certain things we CAN do easily, but not for others who have difficulty to do or no mind to do.
Even easy things are easy only because God made it easy for us, I believe, by His grace.
If someone calls me legalistic or something bad and I respond without grace, then, I am being no less legalist, I think.
Again, under law or grace is the line that separates legalist from gospelist who is under grace, knowing what the letter or lawful spirit is all about in contrast to the light of the sweet Spirit, not mentally known but soaked in Him, being full of Him.
Only because I am not full of Him, I am full of myself and being legalistic from time to time even without knowing my being crossed to another side I was saved from.
Usually my first jumpy thought or act is from the legalistic point of view, because my good old self under law is fast and first 'go', telling what is right or wrong black and white, legally and lawfully.
I don't know about you but that is my struggle against my lawful legalistic mind work.
