My former Pastor has said on occasion that if a "good" Christian movie comes out that you should go see it. His reasoning is that Hollywood makes their decisions on things that make money, and if we do not support the "good stuff" then Hollywood will stop making them. What are your thoughs on this?

I agree w/ most...if it is a GOOD movie, I'll see it. Unfortunately, most Christian movies aren't very good. Bad script, lousy acting, kinda corny... (Left Behind movies, Billy Graham movies, etc...) "Facing The Giants" was one of the best Christian movies I've seen, but I only saw it once on DVD a little over a year ago. I plan to buy it soon or watch it again w/ some friends. "The Passion of the Christ" was excessively violent, but it made its point. I'd rank it up there w/ one of the best Christian/Catholic flicks. Maybe if they had Christians wear technology-driven, ramped up, high-flying suits of armor...[;)] (Bibleman does NOT count!!)

I think it is a good idea to support good clean or christian based movies, because it gives us a voice in Hollywood and helps more of those type movies to be made.

I think it is important that we go see Christian movies. It does send a message to Hollywood that there is an audience for these movies. FoxFaith has released several good ones recently: The Ulitmate Gift, The Last Sin Eater, One Night with the King, and the Love Comes Softly series. All excellent movies, and ones I would highly recommend.

purposely, no. i wont just go to a movie because a christian made it. in fact i generally dont go to the movies much anyway plus being realistic, while what the OP suggest could happen.. it just wont, just like unless they tell you they put poison in coke, no boycott of any kind will close it.

I won't go see a poorly made Christian themed film, just because it is "Christian". IMO, Christian and cheesey should never go hand in hand. [8\|] I will go see really good movies, and not see trash, regardless of the source. I am not afraid to get up and walk out of a film, if it is trashing Christianity.

I'm not going to pay to see a movie, regardless of who made it, unless it's something that interests me. Saying we should purposely pay to see a movie because it's "Christian" is like saying I should go see all Irish movies because I'm Irish.

To be honest, I am so sick of this Christian culture that we are creating. Instead of going out and being in the world, we create our own little Christian bubble. Especially in the field of art. We take things of secular culture, Christianize it, and then seclude the outside world with it.

What are your thoughs on this? as has been noted, there are really two issues here: morality and excellence. even a cursory reading of phil 4.8 reveals that there are numerous aspects of any thing (including film) that a christian should be aware of and engage with (some thoughts may be found here. i submit that, any and every movie is moral - that is, it presents a version of morality. if we are advocating that we only attend movies that only present a certain form or type of morality that is something else. in fact, there are many movies (and why hollywood is the measure in this question is also an issue with me - as if it is only hollywood that determines what does or doesn't get made) that get made that are more honest about engaging with morality than "christian" movies. alas, i find i am in the same camp as francis schaeffer (and for that matter, the writers of the bible) - both the fall and redemption are stories that must be told. and we can learn from, and be moved by, one as much as the other...

Personally- no ...it's like me going to an auto mechanic just because there's a fish logo on the ad and a bible verse which reminds me now of when we hired this plumber that we know from church because he's a Christian...he seems like he's a good person but did not do the job right and ended up someone else correcting the job...now going back to the movie topic...my answer is still no.

The way I see it, anytime you go buy a movie ticket, you are taking a gamble- the movie might be good, but it also might be a dud. Every dollar we spend goes to line someone's pockets. So why not support the movies that are made with a specifically Christian morality or theme? If it is bad, feel free to say so and not recommend it to others. If it is great, then you have the satisfaction of seeing a really good movie and you just made a statement to Hollywood and the powers that be that there is a market for good wholesome films. If we want more movies made that are clean, uplifiting films, we have to let Hollywood know there is a market for such films. When a "Christian" or family friendly movie does well at the box office, Hollywood takes notice. Then more films like this are likely to be produced. However, if we all refuse to give these movies a chance, because Christian movies have been historically cheesy, then we are sending a message- that we don't really care if they make more movies like this or not. And we can continue to expect the mostly morally convoluted, foul language infused, sexually explicit material that is the usual Hollywood fare.

I have to admit one of my pet peeves is Christians who complain about how bad Hollywood is, who then fail to patronize good quality movies with solid Christian themes like Luther, and Amazing Grace, and Bella, etc. Either resign yourself to letting Hollywood be a garbage pit and stop complaining, or do something about it. This is not to say there aren't beautiful, moral movies that convey truth besides those that are distinctly Christian, but we have a wealth of history and a number of stories that can be put on screen, written about, and set to music - and we ourselves need to appreciate that before we expect others to. That being said, I think there have been in recent years a number of successful and high quality films with Christian messages (The Narnia movies, The Passion, Chariots of Fire, etc.); and this is a good thing.

Have you given any a chance recently? I would argue that the standards have risen considerably. Several of the Christian movies that have come out recently have been very well made films. Have you seen Amazing Grace, The Ultimate Gift, or One Night with the King?

I saw One Night with the King. Well made, great sets and scenery, but poor writing and acting (IMO) I do agree that the Chronicles of Narnia films and such are very, very good, but they were made by major secular companies, not the Left Behind type B flicks.
