their bad advice could really hurt or kill someone in extreme cases For someone with medical issues that require a different treatment, possibly. But for anyone else, it's sound advice. Any "professional" would basically tell you the same. I do not know of even one medical professional that would give the kind of dietary advice that this person has been given in this thread if they knew the person was a diabetic. Diabetes is not something to mess around with...and if you don't understand it then you (you being general, not specifically YOU) shouldn't be giving advice on what meals to make or what combinations to make or how many calories to eat, etc. Those are things that can kill a diabetic if they are put together in the wrong ways. I can understand your statement if this were a general thread about dieting, but it isn't....it was a specific person asking a specific question about themselves and their situation...and they are diabetic. That above all else needs to be controlled and monitored by someone qualified to do so, and people that know nothing about diabetes don't need to give advice that could very well kill them if it is followed.

I'm sure they knew they were asking lay people and not a board full of doctors. that's true...and I am not denying that others have said that...but some of the other advice that has been given is what I was referring to....like someone telling him a good meal plan that for a diabetic could send them over the edge and in essence, depending on how bad their levels were, could kill them or send them into a diabetic coma or any number of other things. Anyway....I am just saying that any advice other then "see a dr/dietitian" really shouldn't be followed.

Its been stressfully. You figure made be i should be losting but i'm retating it in weight. I'm on water pills, I don't use salt like use too, I just don't know any more. I've change my food goup so many times it just hard yes a gym is great when u have the time. thank to all for you advise. Did the wavey guy mean "see ya!"? That's sad! Just because it seemed hard or inconvenient? I read so much frustration but also hopelessness here. I think too often people do just throw up their hands and say "nevermind" because it's too hard or too confusing. In this case, it coul be deadly, though.

I have seen a friend go into a diabetic coma and have other issues (turned out to be related to "diabetic keto acidosis")...in fact I had to call 911 for them. Diabetes is not something to mess around with or ignore...it doesn't go away on it's own and needs to be monitored by people that can help in controlling it!!!

he most important thing for a diabetic is to keep their insulin/sugar levels even and not high and low... thats what you told me and according to that i gave advice. normally i wouldnt advise someone to eat carbs in the late hours. normally i wouldnt advise carbs taht arent whole wheat either. there is a medium insulin response from carbs that are digested medium fast(hope that makes sense with that wording). it depends on their GI level. also combining carbs with fat has a high insulin response from what i hear which is why i told him to avoid it. im not sure exactly how much HIS insulin in particular should be. or what G.I. his foods should be, thats up to him to find out, and if he has been a diabetic for years he should kinda already know

i dont quite understand what you are talking about cause of the wording. since you lost 3 lbs though since you posted this it seems good progress. also when you can and if doctor allows it(when it comes to you being a diabetic and having high blood pressure... if he starts talking about knees and stuff i'd most likely ignore him) start weightlifting. it will do wonders to your metabolism which is what really lets you lose fat when on a calorie deficit. if he allows it do the exercizes i listed in a previous post, 2-3 times a week(2 times the heavier ones, 3 times the lighter ones)

Just tring to loose a gut here. And I thank all of you for your Advice. And don't even talk about chicken I eat so much I think i'm growing wings Oh boy, do I know the feeling! Growing wings, tell me about it! I'm considering it an exercise in discipline to train myself to eat to live not to live to eat. HUGE struggle for me. I'm to the point that 90% of the time I just eat what I need so that I can eat the 10% stuff that I want without the consequences. You learn to prioritize the splurges - special events, ocassional rewards. In a sick way you actually enjoy it more. But eating right can be very boring and redundant, I know. Check out the book and/or website Eating for Life (www.eatingforlife.com). It's an offshoot of Body for Life but the recipes and ideas there are great! Some of my more FUN healthy recipes that sometimes get me through when I feel like I want to "cluck": Protein Pancakes: 2 egg whites, 2 T FF or LF cottage cheese, and 4T oats. Mix that up in a blender (I have the Magic Bullet) and make pancakes; if it's OK for you, a little sugar free pancake syrup or powdered sugar on top...yummy! I did this in my waffle iron till it broke too. The same ingredients but I did something different on the amounts - don't remember now but I think it had more oats to make it thicker. Cottage cheese with pineapple is like a dessert to me now. But, again if it's OK for you - cottage cheese with banana and a tiny bit of syrup tastes a lot like Bananas Foster! Pasta Primavera - chicken, veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, tomato) "stir fried" in olive oil with a little parmesan and whole wheat spaghetti. Are sweet potatoes OK for you? Make french fries - slice them up and shake them up in baggie with a tiny bit of olive oil and garlic and bake them on a cookie sheet in the oven. You do have to watch too much of that olive oil but a little is good for you. There are about a million different uses for cottage cheese on eatingforlife.com. If you don't think you like cottage cheese try some of these things. Drink LOTS of water - like a gallon plus. And drink very little of anything else. You have to find exercise that you enjoy - or you wont do it. And Konstantinos is right that weights can help build muscle which will help in a lot of ways. Don't "ignore" the doctors' advice, be careful with it, but you can do some safe weight-based exercise. Glad you came back to the post!

If you keep eating the same amount and don't do anything with it, yes, you'll get fat. I'm with Konstantinos - no reason to stop! http://www.abc.net.au/science/k2/moments/s1613539.htm

i once read somewhere that depending on your training your muscles will adapt similarly. what do i mean... there are powerlifters, strongmen, olympic lifters. they have far more strength than bodybuilders of the same size. this happens by lifting heavier weights for fewer reps. bodybuilders usually use 8-12 reps. well basically i read that if you go for strength(the first category) then your muscles will be smaller but thicker(or soemthing like that) and they will look tight all the time. bodybuilders on the other hand have their muscles look as tight as they can get only during the period of time the pump lasts. or something like that. not sure cause even though i read that article im not really all that interested in that sort of stuff so my brain's memory didnt put such a high priority on it. thats one geeky way to explain memory.

ORIGINAL: wrenchman I need to lose weight no weight pills or liquids. I'm diabete with high blood pressure. I work from Dawn to Sunset 2 day off sat and sun. I done the Atkins diet but fall of the wagon now i've gain the weight back. and gut. I'm 60" in the gut and 290 lbs. Anybody out their who has a good program that not to kill me. I know you already got lots of great advice of plans and fitness plans, but I lost my weight simply by counting my calories, and making the ones I took in count and simple exercise at home. I ate lots of soup, cereal (mostly total of some variety) and a small dinner with more veggies on my plate than anything else. If I snacked during the day, I made it fruit. When I got the weight off, I just simply make sure that the calories go in get burned off. Exercise is important in every day life anyway, and it is better than sitting around. You have a very demanding work schedule, but you can probably find 10 minutes here and there to do some floor exercises, or get on a stair stepper like I did. Mine is one of those small ones and I watch TV while I do it so I am not constantly looking at the clock. I take the staris rather than an elevator when possible and walk to the store rather than drive when possible. I just try not to use my car if I can walk, and all those gadgets you can buy to make your daily tasks easier, I don't use them. I bake bread and I make it by hand. I don't just throw things into a machine and let it do the work. EVERY little thing counts and the more active you are, the better off you are. All I can say is that is how I did it. I just made little changes in my lifestyle that added more activity to daily routines, and counted my calories. Baby carrots are awesome and pickles. I love pickles. But I did try to eat lots of veggies and when I drank juice, I made sure that it at least counted for something. Like V-8 Fusions, or a good cranberry juice. I look at my lables and ocen spray has juices that one 8oz glass equals half of your daily fruits. So if you aren't getting the actual fruit in, while juice isn't ideal, if it doesn't have any sugar added and is giving you some nutritional support, it is better than a granola bar filled with sugar, or chips. That is what helped me loose over 30lbs.

I am a Type 2 diabetic and I've lost over 85 pounds in 8 months by eating healthier, counting calories, and getting moderate exercise. Talk to your doctor and a registered dietician/nutritionist about setting up a personalized healthy eating plan! If you are not testing your blood sugars 4-6 times per day, start! (And log the info!) ALWAYS test before exercising, too. If you are taking insulin, or any other form of diabetes meds (pills included), watch your carb levels to make sure that your blood sugars don't get too low. There are some basic food groups that I tend to eat a lot of, divided up into 4 meals per day.... lean proteins (egg whites, turkey, chicken, tuna, low fat cheeses, lean ham, lean beef, fish), high-fiber whole grains (Fiber One cereal, other high fiber cereals, high fiber whole grain breads), and non-starchy vegetables (salad veggies, cabbage, broccoli, green beans, artichokes, mushrooms, peppers, onions, asparagus, etc.) Beans and nuts are also a healthy part of a diabetic diet, if you like them. (Get unsalted nuts!) If I do eat fruit, it's only once per day ... an apple, a cup of berries, or 1/2 a banana. You might consider dividing up your daily calories into 4 meals (or 3 meals plus 2 snacks) ... to match your lifestyle and medication dosing schedule. My daily calorie budget looks like this ... Breakfast 300-400 calories Lunch 400-500 calories Dinner 500-700 calories Evening Snack 300-400 calories TOTALS: 1500 - 2000 calories Of course, you would need to adjust your calories UPWARD since you are male and physically active ... but this gives you the idea. Be sure and eat protein for every meal, plus something with fiber, and then fill in with healthy veggie options. I eat a lot of salads, cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, mushrooms, spinach .... all very filling and diet-friendly. I also eat high fiber english muffins, high fiber bagels, and a high fiber cereal. If I can help, let me know. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
