We grew up with a pool, my parents put it in before I was born, so I have always been a pool girl!
It's an inground pool, 18x36, and it was so much fun!
Normally, in the spring, we use a big net to fish out all the leaves, pine needles and other various items. Then we give it a couple of major shocks, and then it is easy to maintain the rest of the year.
We don't cover it in the winter, but we winterize it, and drain it down below the skimmer entrance. By the end of winter, there's lots of water in it.
We usually start cleaning it up in May/June and winterize around October/November.
We use Lavo 12 for chlorine, and we don't much bother with pH stuff unless it's really off. Actually, the only time we really use pH up or down is in the spring when we are shocking it, the chlorine and algaecide will really work much better if the pH is at an ideal level.
Do you have test strips? What kind of chemicals do you have now?
Oh, and another thing, if you're pH is really off, you don't have to buy that pH up stuff, baking soda is exactly the same thing. There's lots of websites that tell how to use it. Or even your local pool supply store.
Do you have a brush? Like this?
Once we shock the pool in the spring, when it's really green because of the algae, we take this brush and brush all the stuff off the liner on the bottom and sides. It makes the water reallllllly cloudy and gross looking, but the chemicals work a lot faster.
So that's all at my mom's house.... hubby and I bought a little framed above ground pool last summer, and we have to wait until we decide if we're building onto our house or not before we put it up. If we're building, we won't have anywhere to put the pool.

That's a little bit bigger then ours Yolanda....and it is a tonne of fun!!!! (I spelled that "tonne" just for you  ). I think ours is about 15x30 or so....if I remember correctly. Just the right size IMO for us to have fun but not have it be too big. It's deep enough to have lots of fun too...diving board, etc.

yesterday we started that process....and boy was it messy on the bottom!!!! We got it all out though with the net....or we thought we did. Then we put algea killer in it....and shock last night....now it is a bluish color, not pond scum green anymore, so a few more shocks and it should be good to go. There is more scum floating on the top though this morning, so I guess we didn't get all of it out yet.

hmmm....good to know....so far right now the levels are good...I am going to check it this morning again.

yay..another good thing to know...we have that in bulk (thanks to Sam's club....we use it for cleaning stuff)

yeah we have that brush and did that yesterday.....did the net thing to get the bulk stuff out.....then did algaecide and let that sit there for about an hour, then scraped down the sides and bottom with that brush. We could see the chemicals working pretty fast though....and by last night it was looking pretty good...so we shocked it overnight. Now it is cloudy but bluish in color, so it is going pretty good.
thanks for the pics....you know I LOVE pics!!!! HERE is a pic of our pool (that's my nephew on the board)....kind of murky water cause it rained last year for basically a month straight when that was taken.

Both dh and I grew up with pools and used them all year round. I've never heard of "winterizing" them! My parents had a "pool guy" and dh's parents did it themselves. We do not have a pool at our house - no yard - but we have one through the association. We usually go a few times a week in the summer months when our schedules aren't so crazy busy! Both dh and I grew up with VERY strict pool rules - no running around the pool, no diving in the shallow end, no jumping onto someone else and things like that. Dh's dad even had one after we were married and had kids - no yelling in the pool?! It was not unusual for us or one of our friends to be removed from the pool for not obeying the rules.
Something else I noticed in you guys' pics - in our area, you would not be able to get homeowners insurance if your pool was not fenced in and/or gated. No way can you have an open body of water that anyone could get to!
