youngartist -> Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/5/2008 12:31:53 PM)

It has been reported in the recent concerts thread that Dave McVay (formerly of Three Bridges) appeared alongside Poet Voices members Mitchel Jon and Phil Cross in place of departing tenor Greg Crowe.

Does anybody know if this was (a) a fill-in until a permanent replacement comes, (b) an audition, or (c) his debut appearance as a member?

CEinCA -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/5/2008 12:47:58 PM)

Dave was singing with Poet Voices on Saturday, but I never heard officially if he is a permanent addition.

robertyork -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/5/2008 4:15:43 PM)

I just received word from a booking agent that Dave was singing with them. Poet Voices only sings one weekend a month. Phil is also getting ready to celebrate 25 years.

Wow, if Dave is a permanent fixture this means the old Three Bridges are essentially back, but have now added Phil Cross as their anchor. Very interesting. Additional info would be appreciated.

Don't know what Phil might be planning to do for his 25th anniversary. Maybe he'll try to recruit some of the first people that sang with him. Don't know who would be available. Dale is the only one I can think of that might come back for awhile if he can get away from driving the bus.

I was out at the Great (so-so) western convention for two nights and you are correct in the Poet Voices line up. No clue was given to the future, just that he was there and Greg Crowe had accepted a full time position as minister of music at his church. Group shake ups are frequent and normal and Poet Voices is not a place where job security is in the norm.

Mrmusicfan -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/5/2008 9:08:20 PM)

If Poet Voices only travels one weekend/date a month, then how are they making it in the Top Ten for SN Trio of the Year? SN makes it clear that the awards are for full-time artists only...and if you only travel one date/weekend a month...does that make you full-time? I just wanted to know...

robertyork -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/5/2008 9:11:05 PM)

All of the group are full time artist. Each of them have a solo ministry and they travel together as a group one weekend out of the month. This is the same thing that Mercy Way does. Danny Funderburk and the others have full time solo ministries.

Mrmusicfan -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/5/2008 10:17:34 PM)

yeah but the rules are that the group has to be full-time. Trio: The guidelines are for a full-time SG group.... If Poet Voices were counted as full-time, groups like the Talley Trio,Whisnants,Mark Trammell Trio, and Karen Peck & New River could work only one date a month and still be counted among the top trios in the land b/c they travel full-time even though they only travel one date a month...

youngartist -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/6/2008 8:46:20 AM)

You're right amsmusicfan. Could it be that they were nominated before SN found out that they only sing one weekend a month? Take Jonathan Wilburn, for example. He made the Top 10 ballot about the time he resigned from Gold City, yet he's still on.

tecstar -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/6/2008 11:39:28 AM)

I only see where Mitch Jon has a full time solo schedule in addition to PV. Greg Crowe's website isn't up to date so he is up in the air. Not really sure about Phil but he is always writing.

Mrmusicfan -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/6/2008 4:11:55 PM)

Poet Voices has been traveling in that capacity since they revamped in 2003/2004. They have also been nominated for Favorite Trio before.

TQ_Fan_4_Life -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/6/2008 5:20:14 PM)

just goes to show you is more on a inside fave list than other ways. they should not be allowed to be in the running if they part-time and wow is one weekend a month part time.

thats SG national Guard stuff there.

pathway -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/6/2008 5:40:17 PM)

Phil Cross is full time in the Gospel Industry. When Phil is not traveling with Poet Voices he is busy writing gospel music and doing choir seminars.

TQ_Fan_4_Life -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/6/2008 5:43:22 PM)

yes but that is not touring as Poet Voices.

pathway -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/6/2008 5:44:07 PM)

Greg Crowe is not in the group now. So you don't need to worry about his website. I would think he is too busy working as MOM in a big church.

bradytenor -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/6/2008 10:23:08 PM)

The rules are there but never followed. Its the same as how groups can't be nominated in their first year but if you know the right people that doesn't matter. There should be a part time group award for groups like Poet Voices or Mercys Way.

TQ_Fan_4_Life -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/6/2008 11:22:29 PM)

I don't agree with you about the award. I think there is too many as it is. but that is personal thought. if have awards make them for the full time groups alone.

part-time artists are the backbone of the industry I feel, but how do you decide the part time artist award? who is most famous and decided to slow down on road and do one weekend a month? or the groups out pounding the roads on weekends every weekend? that is the catch to that kind of award.

don't get me wrong, I love part-time groups

I can agree with that. It seems there is some sort of Southern Gospel awards everytime you turn around. There is getting to be so many it is hard for any one of them to hold any validity.

kinda like country music and rock music is getting to be. CMT and GC awards, ACM, CMA, Grammy's, is but a smallllll sampling of country awards that are the major ones.

I say have one awards show to hold validty. maybe two tops. say NQC and Fan Fair.
otherwise is like.
interviewer: wow what award is that.
response: oh thats the Greater Valley of the Southern District of the West part of so-and-so state tour of the year.
interviewer: are you kidding that's uhmmmmm great news.
response: yeah but where is the place at?
interviewer: what do you mean?
response: we never heard of it

danielmount -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/7/2008 12:18:12 PM)

I think the NQC Fan Awards are the most respected awards in our genre. They are the only ones prestigious enough that basically every nominee shows up.

The same cannot even be said for the Doves or the Grammys (in our genre).

sgharley -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/7/2008 2:20:12 PM)

The only reason most nominees show up is because they are already at NQC performing on main stage and trying to sell product. Unless they are a group able to draw the same size crowd at a reqular concert.

TQ_Fan_4_Life -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/7/2008 2:22:34 PM)

SGharley you got it right. a national artist blowing off NQC would be almost akin to career suicide.

Billboy -> RE: Dave McVay Appears With Poet Voices (5/7/2008 6:10:21 PM)

If Dave is really with them, I would surely like to see them. I have made it no secret before that I really liked the original Three Bridges Sound. I wonder if Mitch will get to sing lead, or if Phil will remain there?

EHSS did it and hasn't won a Fan Award since. [&:]
