With the multi day events, they are like vacations. I know with Singing in the Sun, how can you beat being able to go to the beach during the day and having great Southern Gospel music in the evening. I loved going to Singing in the Sun. I plan to go back next year. With an event like this I already knew what to expect as far as each group only singing 25-30 minutes and I didn't mind it. With a single day concert where I am driving back home from the concert, I really only prefer 1-2 groups on the program.

I would say it depends on the event and what people become accustomed to expecting. For a ticketed event, I think promoters make a big mistake when they bring in four or five major groups for just one night. The multitude of artists may entice more individuals to show up for the concert, which I suppose is the bottom line for the event, but the fans often go away feeling unfulfilled because their favorite artist only sang for 20-30 minutes. Plus, they still have to pay all those artists...so is having a bigger crowd better or not? It sure poses a greater risk to the bottom line. For a single night event, I think you're better off going with one major artist plus a popular local artist. I agree with Seaton. It's different at a multi-day event. The same artists may be appearing several times during the course of the event and there may be matinee shows in addition to evening concerts. Promoters who try to create that same atmosphere for a single evening event must either advertise heavily or be doomed to losing money. Either way, it's a big risk. I am far from being a seasoned promoter. I've promoted just two events in the past ten years...so take that for what it's worth. :o)

I don't have any problem with a local group opening for a full-time group. I sang for a local group before i entered the full-time circuit of artist too. My only problem is when regional groups think they have a point to prove when they are around the more well known groups. This is where southern gospel has gone totally wrong. The competition factor is rediculous!!!! Am I right? Here is the truth...most "full-time" groups enjoy hearing the local talent in the specific concert areas but get tired of the competition. Please remember this is my opinion...lol. On the other hand...I have seen some local talent that has blown the "full-time" artists out of the water! I have also seen some "full-time" artist not give the local talent the time of day and in my personnal opinion...THAT is wrong and THAT is when you ask yourself "why am i singing gospel music?" there is my two cents...lol...anyone agree?

ORIGINAL: robertyork I often have problems with the major groups wanting to sing that long. Numerous times they have been given an hour time before break and they will cut that time short and the time given after break is also cut short. I usually have a three hour window. Opening group 30-40 minutes. Major group one hour. 15 minute break. Major group only after break for 45 - 60 minutes. THey all get a schedule well before concert time so they know how much time they have. and I've NEVER been disappointed in any of your opening groups! I concur.

I've never been to a concert where a group sang for two hours, unless you count the 40 minute intermission. I'm not complaining. An hour of singing is 15-20 songs.

ORIGINAL: robertyork Do concert goers like one or two artist or do they like, multi. 5-6 artist? Seems to me that packed audiences come from multi events. Take a look at recent Singing In Sun. Artist only got 25-30 minutes to perform. The place was packed out. Other concert venues where there are only one or two artist and they are not near full. Might be a good poll question. I for one felt disappointed in the amount of time allowed at Singing in the Sun. Too much time alloted to regional/local/part time/whatever you prefer to call them. I did have a great time but I really came to hear the last two groups that night and they were rushed because it was the last night and the promoter had a time limit to get out of the convention center. It was late too. Still too many on the program.

When someone starts talking a green light goes on, in one minute a yellow light goes on, fifteen seconds later the light turns red, five seconds later the mic goes off unless some singing starts. If it works for Toastmasters and the Supreme Court, it can work for concerts.

Now here is a different side to the story. Several years ago I went to a concert that was listing a big named group and a unknown local group. The bus broke down for the big name group and they could not get there at all. The unknown local group came and did a 90 minute program, and did it very well. We were told that the big name group was having bus trouble when we arrived, but most people chose to stay. Do not think there was a person that was not happy with what they heard.

That happened to Dinana and me once. We had traveled to a concert in North Georgia to see Mercy's Mark, but they couldn't get there because of bus trouble. The Mike LeFevre Quartet (not exactly an "unknown", but not widely known at the time) did the entire program and they were absolutely terrific. And that's where Dinana met her friend, Vera, that travels all over the place with her now!!! Vera was gonna leave when it was announced that MMQ couldn't make it. Dinana talked her into staying for the concert. And the rest, as they say, is history!

I have to admit that I'm a snob and don't usually enjoy local groups. I try to be open-minded but I get impatient waiting for the "big name" to get on stage. =) However, I heard the Message Trio at Trinity BC in Asheville several weeks ago. They opened for the Whisnants, and I really enjoyed them. They sang about 5 numbers and did a super job! They pulled off "Preach the Word" and did it well. In addition to that, I am always so impressed when the "big name" artists will come into the auditorium and listen intently and at least look like they are enjoying the local groups. The Whisnants are one group that is so gracious in this way.

ORIGINAL: utilityfielder Are these separate songs from the vocal numbers or are they instrumental run outs at the end of vocal numbers? I said they often perform more than one of these instrumental numbers "back to back," so it could hardly be the latter.

This made a good question for Singing News Home Page last week. 74% said they should open. Only 26% said No.
