YOU MAY CHOOSE MORE THAN ONE ANSWER IN THE POLL

Is outward "adornment" sin?

Can women wear expensive clothing, just so it is modest?

Shoes and purses, nice or cheap?

Are high heels giving off a sexual message to men?

Please discuss all of these and any other thoughts on the matter of women adorning themselves.

EDITED TO ADD: I know this is a broad topic, but I felt the wider the topic, the less chance of going off topic[;)]

Depends mostly on motivations. In general, I, as a male, do not think women need to adorn themselves with any more than what God has provided them. My wife wears all those things to one degree or another. It has no impact on me. Sometimes things are done for practicality, and I don't think expense plays as much a role as modesty (expensive isn;t inherently immodest and cheap isn't inherently modest)

Not necessarily.

What is expensive to one is not expensive to another. And what if something was expensive once and you picked it up for a dollar at a garage sale? It doesn't matter.

Shoes and purses, nice or cheap?

Same same. Although for the record, I will spend money to buy good, durable shoes; on the other hand, I have a hard time spending more than a few dollars on a shirt or buying expensive pants.

High heels are giving off the message that you don't care that your toes, feet, ankles, knees, hips and back could sustain permanent damage due to your choice in shoes.

I personally believe that well-applied makeup will make a woman appear to have no makeup on. But I don't believe it's a sin to wear more or be fancy with your makeup or jewelry or whatever. Tasteful is preferred, though.

Your question is very broad because expensive items vs just wearing makeup is two different issues.

I believe we should look our best, even if that means coloring your hair, wearing colorful clothing and makeup. No need to look sad and frumpy.

I am the Lord's Jewel. I like to think that my freckles are diamonds, my eyes are emeralds, and my teeth are pearls. yellowing crooked pearls, but pearls nonetheless.

CoeurdeLeon -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/8/2008 2:52:51 PM)

I wear somewhat expensive make-up because it's good for my skin.

I buy good shoes to take care of my feet, etc.

I buy good clothes so that they last.

The jewelry that I have is very good, very expensive and 90% of it I received as gifts.

I don't see any of that as extravagant. If someone else thinks I'm being extravagant and/or sinfully adorning myself, well, what they think doesn't really concern me. It's none of my business.

bluestone -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/8/2008 2:54:44 PM)

I would think it is none of THEIR business[;)]

What she means is that what people think of her is none of her business.

And I very much agree with that . . . it's none of my business what anyone else thinks of me.

Additionally, I don't have an opinion about how other women dress or how much and what kind of make-up they use, whether they're wearing high heels and what their motivation for doing so might be.

I've got enough trouble keeping track of myself, I can't be responsible for critiquing the rest of the world, too.[;)][8D]

bluestone -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/8/2008 2:58:50 PM)

Years ago, I heard many a sermon on the evils of women with outward adornment. One of the preachers had gold rimmed glasses, and a big old ring, so after that I took it with a grain of salt.

Goose, Gander, blah blah blah.

By all means, please do.[:)]

Right, I've got no business being inside somebody else's head and, even if they express it to me, I've got no business dealing with whatever neuroses they're suffering under that would make them feel they had the right to do so.[;)]

That, too. But try telling some people that something is none of their business.[;)]

Frankly, I consider my use of make-up to be a public service.

Nothing disrupts a church service like twenty kids squalling in terror, women fainting and men cowering in fear.

BarryLee -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/8/2008 3:02:47 PM)

My first thought is: why does this question only include women? Can’t men be guilt of the same things?

One thing to keep in mind about clothing is that there is a higher level of quality in some more expensive items. Now, you must use some common sense, but often times the cheapest pair of shoes is not the best long term investment. This does not necessarily include fads and certain designer wear which are often over priced, but just simply good quality materials and assembly techniques.

Now, are high heels giving off a sexual message to men? Well, general speaking I would say no, but in certain situations maybe. Often times a man may receive a message that was not really given. So, who is responsible - the man or the woman?

Basically all believers should dress modestly and in good taste. The amount of money a person spends on clothing is a personal matter and is a product of their budget which should be determined through prayer and biblically based fiscal responsibility.

bluestone -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/8/2008 3:04:12 PM)

I wear quite a bit of expensive makeup (stays on much longer than the cheap stuff) and I wear good quality shoes. My hair is cut and colored, and I shave my legs. My nails are polished.

I work in an arena where I have to look well groomed and professional.
I could not wear a denim jumper with my hair in a bun and not a lick of makeup on. I would not hire someone who did. Nature of the business.

Because men wearing makup and heels is a subject you can't keep on topic![8D]

I don't too many opinions on this one, but I have a couple of observations.

On jewelry, I have reservations about a nose bone and neck extenders...

On makeup, you can see the progress of a woman's near vision going just by observing the results of too much of everything. I usta think it was an act of desperation but now methinks it's the difficulty of focusing without bifocals on.

bluestone -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/8/2008 3:14:38 PM)

The scripture reference most often used by those against thest things is a quote from Paul to Timothy:

1Ti 2:9 In like manner, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefastness and sobriety; not with braided hair, and gold or pearls or costly raiment;
1Ti 2:10 but (which becometh women professing godliness) through good works.
