You don't know how glad I am that you enjoyed it, and I had fun writing it. I had completely made fun of the questions initially, then went back and erased those answers, because sometimes I go too far.

Now, allow me to horrify you.

When I rewrote my answer, I put in the answers of a church I had attended until mid-1958, and those were actually how they would have answered in 1958! Everything I wrote there, except for the parts about the pastor's wife and about white gold, was what they taught us! Regarding much of it, they continued to stand by those rules when I left the organization in 1999, and they continue, in 2008. to stand by some of them. And I didn't even bring up television, theaters, and card-playing.

!!!

There should be a sign outside of every church...

Only Ugly Women Are Allowed To Wear Make-up.

Case closed.

...Lean closer, James.

(I can't pull our ears from here.)

I think maybe boxing his ears is more in order.[;)]

Pulling hurts worse. Especially if I give them a good sound twist as I pull[;)]

(You know I am messing with you, right James?)

Don't let her fool you, James. Look at that face. That look could melt you if you look back very long.

SonInMe1 -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/13/2008 8:03:57 AM)

Think about it.

Pretty girls turn heads and cause all this "causing others to sin" stuff. Make them go make-up less and make the less attractive ladies keep their "arsenal" and what you would end up with is more physical equality.

The hard thing is....telling which ladies should wear make up and which should not.

I'll leave that...up to someone else.

Ps103 -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/13/2008 12:33:02 PM)

Well, the only head I am interested in turning is Himself's, and he seems to be unaware of whether or not I am wearing makeup[:D]

I wear it out of sympathy for those I encounter in the outside world.

One thing--I think women are more attuned to whether other women are wearing makeup than men. I have had friends who asked if others felt okay if they were not wearing makeup. One thought women were feeling ill if they didn't have on eye makeup (not lots, just some), and another thought women looked ill if they didn't wear lipstick. It was sort of funny when they were both together--they each thought the other didn't feel well[:D]

Like some other wild animals, women have a tendency of devouring their own. [sm=kitty.gif]

a couple I know will not allow their 15 year old daughter to wear makeup. She has a big strawberry birthmark on her right cheek. They think it is a sin, as is cosmetic surgery to correct "the way God made her".[&:]

If the daughter said that, that would be one thing, but no one else should force a 15 year old to do that if she does not want to. That is cruel.[:@]

bluestone -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/13/2008 3:17:09 PM)

She kept makeup in her locker at school last year, put it on in the morning, took it off before going home. One day she forgot to take it off, so this year she is homeschooled.[:@]
Not allowed to have contact friends, no dating, dresses like little house on the prairie.
They live across the street from me, and IMO, are making dead sure they will have no relationship with the girl when she leaves home.[:(]

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/13/2008 4:26:54 PM)

I forgot to take my lipstick off one time, and when I got home, I heard that awful pop-pop-pop of my father's belt. He hit me so hard I peed my underware and messed up the skirt I was also forced to wear. I cannot tell you how horrifying and belittling that was.

I should not have worn the lipstick, because I knew I wasn't supposed to, but it also would have been nice if I'd been able to wear a very-needed bra then, but that was also not allowed.

It's odd what parents and churches will get in their heads, making up salvation-rules that G-d never thought of, trying their best to improve upon salvation.

bluestone -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/13/2008 4:29:17 PM)

[:o] I agree.

lightshineon -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/13/2008 5:26:28 PM)

That is so disturbing, I am sorry, maybe your father ment well, but that is hard to defend that behavior. All three of my daughters wear make-up. How did your parents think not wearing a bra, was the more wholesome choice? I am sorry for you, even if it happened years ago.[sm=icon_smile_cry.gif]

My parents didn't let me shave my legs till I was like 14. I had very dark, thick hair on my legs and everyone made fun of me. I wore knee high socks, even in 100 degree heat just to try and hide them. I tried to make sure I didn't do that kind of thing to my daughter.

lightshineon -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/13/2008 7:31:52 PM)

I will say mom and dad, never made a big deal about those things. Kath, I am hairy also, and other girls can be so mean about hairy legs. I do not do those things with my girls either, and you know, they did things appropriate like make-up, at the right time. I do have a problem with middle DD hair, she wants to have it in her face. She has the most beautiful eyes, and you see one of them. I have tried everything. I just started praying, I think it is low self-worth. She had a hunch back, until scoliosis surgery, and people were cruel. She is a swan now, but she does not see it.

Is outward "adornment" a sin?

Hey even jewels need polishing.

Can women wear expensive clothing, just so it is modest?

Jewels need a proper setting. You don't put a sapphire in a tin setting. Gold all the way, tasteful and modest of course, but definitely gold. This jewel deserves the best.

Shoes and purses, nice or cheap?

This jewel needs leather (sweaty feet) so nice shoes it is. Bags? Can be cheap but must be cute.

Are high heels giving off a sexual message to men?

I think modesty is the issue, not the height of a heel. Of course, I saw a man trying to check out the butt of a muslim girl wearing a burka. Real sad, that.[sm=icon_smile_faint.gif]

Please discuss all of these and any other thoughts on the matter of women adorning themselves.

Well... after a woman reaches a certain age, miniskirts aren't so much immodest as just plain icky. Tattooed eyebrows are just a huge fashion don't. Bra straps that show are tacky.

lightshineon -> RE: Should Christian Women wear makeup, jewelry, nice shoes & clothes? (5/13/2008 8:24:32 PM)

I am in a goofy mood but the burma and butt comment is so funny. I had mood altering ( sinful) medication for a headache though.[sm=redfaced.gif]

Perhaps they couldn't afford it. That is a possibility. I remember, however, that when they wouldn't buy me one, I found one in a store and stole it. I remember the price, too: $1.98. Can you believe pretty little bras were once less than $2? I also remember that when I became a believer, we were no longer in that state, and I wrote a letter to them to pay for that bra with a lot of interest I tacked on. [:D]

But the lasting thing is that I would never let either husband take off their belts unless i was out of the room and the door was shut. To this day, that pop-pop-pop breaks me down. I hate that sound. I heard it a lot. [:D]

Covaan, it sounds like your father was abusive? Was he, or was he just an extreme disciplinarian?

And is that you as a child in the avatar? That is so cute!

It's hard for me to say he was. He did what he understood was right. (Admittedly, Mother was another story.) Father used the belt on me about three times, and twice was for wearing lipstick and lying about it the first time. He spanked me a couple more times besides that, but that's all.

Yes, that's me. Look at it closely. See the attitude? Ha-ha! Once in awhile, I still feel that very face on me, only now, it's wrinkled! I still wear hats (usually barets), and I now have a collection of over 200 rubber ducks instead of just one!

I just bought my daughters their first training bras, and they were just over $4 for two of them. You can still find good deals out there. [:)]
