I'm sure everyone here has noticed a somewhat of a decline in moral values in pop culture today. But guess what? We have hit an all time low with the new video game GTA 4.

You'd think after the last games, which were utter garbarge for the mind, they would have decreased the disgusting immoral nature of the game. But it seems they felt that they needed to increase the amount of garbage in the game.

Lets look at whats in the game:

+ Killing innocent civilians
+ Killing POLICE OFFICERS
+ Having intercourse with prostitutes (VERY EXPLICIT) and then killing them for a refund
+ Stealing cars (ofcourse, it's in the title)
+ Drinking and driving
+ Going to strip clubs
+ Explicit langauge
+ Don't forget the main plot revolves around a criminal activity

With that said this game should never enter your household. It poisons the mind of our young and I even believe it can be detremental for adults too. I would love to see large pile of these games burned.

They upped the price of games it's now $60.00 + tax. So I would say around 63 dollars total.

I was always pretty strict with Jack. I allowed the Navy Seal game even though it was M but that was because they were shooting at other people. That and Medal of Honor are the worst games I ever let him get. I am pretty thrifty though I would go and get them used so I only paid 10 -30 dollars most for the games.

My husband plays these games, I think it is fine, but stealing cars? That is awful.

It's fine for an adult if they so chose to play, but that is one of the few games I put my foot down with the Things. Thing 1 was once at a friends house and they were playing it. He called me because he wasn't sure if he was allowed to. I said no, and he said that was fine. A few minutes later the mum called saying it was okay if he played because she was watching the boys. I said it wasn't and if it was a problem I could come pick him up. Fifteen minutes later he called saying they were still playing and could I come get him. Went and picked him up and was so proud of him for using that noggin of his that we went out and bought him a new PS2 game. *grin*

Now I don't think it should be removed from the shelves because I'm not a fan of sensorship but I also don't have a problem if people don't play it or let their kids play it.

I let the boys play Halo, and Men of Honor, and Call of Duty, and stuff like that but that's about it in the M department.

I guess I must be a horrible sinner and heathen!

I have been playing video games since I was 4 years old and yes I received the 'Collectors Edition' of GTA4 the day it came out.

Firstly, it's an adult video game so no kids should be playing it to begin with. Secondly, it's no different than watching any mobster movie or the latest cop and robbers shoot 'em up.

I have been playing these games for a good while now and I have never been involved in any criminal activity, it is absolutely absurd to try and say that these things are the cause of today's problems. Hogwash.

I am an author, a police officer, (was a pastor for some years), a husband, a father and playing video games is akin to you watching TV. It's a form of entertainment and a method of relaxing and bonding with family and friends.

FYI - my wife is also currently playing GTA4 - and she is a school teacher that just finished her Masters degree in education.

All of that to simply say - do not stereo-type video game players. You'll end up with pie on your face.

Ah... the Ned Flanders of the world that give Christians a bad name.

Why do we feel we must force our morality and beliefs on others? Why do we act shock when non-Christians act like non-Christians?

I'm sorry...but I don't know a whole lot of people who do become violent because of video games. The only reason we hear about it is because it is a rareity.

We play war games in our house...does that mean we're going to become snipers?

We play fantasy games....does that mean we're going to get into witchcraft?

Sometimes entertainment is just entertainment. There are the people who take things too far but those people exist everywhere...including the churches.

These days? Read up on history and see how our current society is NOWHERE near as violent as the centuries of and before Jesus' time on earth.

Read the annuals of Josephus - the time of Nero (the beast) and see how THAT was a violent society. The image of the old days all being Mayberry is a lie.

I think that it's not something that children should play. But if an adult wishes to purchase it, that's fine by me. The game is marketed mainly towards people in the age bracket of 22-30 year olds I believe, and it's been rated M for mature (the equivalent of an R rating in moves). If one feels that their kids shouldn't play it, then they need to inform their kids of that fact, and make sure to keep an eye on things. All too often sadly people blindly throw money at their kids and let them buy whatever games they want. When I was a young child, my parents took the time to read up on the games I wanted to play, or the movies I wanted to see before saying yes or no. And nowadays it's even easier as all video games are rated by the ESRB.

Not all games are appropriate for children, just like not all movies are.

As a side note, I'll put in a plug for one of my favourite charities, founded by some gamers who were rightfully indignant at the stereotyping gamers get at the hands of the media. Rather than get mad, they decided to start a charity called Child's Play. They basically partner with Amazon.com and various children's hospitals, setting up wish lists for the hospitals. People can purchase games, toys, movies, etc for sick kids in these hospitals. It's an amazing group and a great charity.

Last year they raised over 1.3 million dollars worth of donations to various children's hospitals around the world. These games and toys help kids get their minds off painful treatments at times and help them to be kids, rather than just patients.

Well I am not calling for a ban, I just think it is wrong and would not allow it in my home. I know that video games have an effect on some children. My youngest was in kindergarden, a female. She played " Laura Croft and the tomb raider games. She became more violent in behavior even drawing a shotgun killing people. My other two would fight constantly, after playing it, and even my husband would be agressive. I accidently stepped on them. My husband plays the military games, hey plays the real one, so that is his business. My girls are older, all have all the game systems, the DS thing, play computer games also. This is still my home, and as for me and my house we serve the Lord, is my motto. earthless, I did not call you a sinner, but, for myself it is not of faith so it is sin for me. I am sure you do not want adorable baby when he gets big enough to play this, I don't know, maybe you have a different view. I use to think VG had no effect on kids, until the experience I wrote about above.
There were many factors at Colombine, but, the game what was it? Doom? or something? This game did not help with there agressive behaviors. I do not want my children, who get completely focused on these games ( trance like), to say "Wow I am rewarded for this behavior, violence, bad language, sex". This maybe ok for some parents, no comdenation on my part, I do not know your kids, I am not head of your household, just mine in this area anyway (LOL) and this is my conviction.

There are some more naive and easily influenced kids out there, more than others. And parents need to be aware of that and take appropriate steps.

Neither my sister or me were censored as kids and we turned out better (as bad as that sounds) than all the other church kids around us that ended rebelling BIG time - getting into drugs, not in the faith, unwed-pregnancies, running away, getting into gangs, drug dealing, etc..

This thread reminds me of the current book I am reading - it is John Stossell's (from 20/20) book where he busts media perpetuated myths, and one of the topics he discusses is about video games and people's claims that it is related to school violence, etc..

We can pin this back on retired general Grossman's book where he claims video games train kids to be killers.

Yet none of his claims were substantiated by any actual research or any statistics. His entire book was based on emotional, rather than logical appeal.

And we live in a time when some Christians love going off of emotion and not truth, not facts.

John Stossel also points out that he flat out made up certain "facts", such as the military using games like Quake to desensitize soldiers to violence and killing. Stossel's calls to the military yielded denials of Grossman's claim.

He then goes on to point out that all the subsequent lawmakers, authors, etc against video games all cite Grossman as a source despite the fact that he is not an authority on the subject, nor has he done any actual research. He then finishes by saying what a lot of us have been - let parents decide, not the government.

Hey I am all for parents choice. I do believe so children are effected more by these things. This is not emotions, but something I have observed as a mother.

I guess it's between the individual and God and where you are spiritually as to handling it and how the game affects you in your walk. I'm not going to judge. I wish they would be banned but it is a free country. And I don't think I would want Christian views banned.

But, I am wondering where does the verse that talks about "thinking on these things" whatever is lovely and pure and the rest fit in.

Isn't continually playing these games putting people in a negative and dark role, regardless of being pretend. After a while wouldn't some people especially young people become desensitized to the blatant immoral actions? I mean think aout it. If people play the bad guy long enough. Won't some people begin to like it and not think it's so bad
anymore? I guess to each his own, but it's not for me.

Edit to add: this got me to thinking as far as tv shows with immoral actions. With TV were observing, which is probably not so great either. But with these games were actually putting ourselves in that role as a criminal. Doesn't that make it even more worrisome. Why would a Christian wish to become something the Bible is clearly against? Evn if it's just pretend. Why would I want' to become a thief, adulterer, fornicator, etc.?

It's all a matter of observation and perception. You just have to see how your child is with certain influences and adjust accordingly.

I had no boundries growing up and I am a perfect example of how no boundries AND lack of proper teaching can screw a kid up. By the time my parents decided to get into church I was at the age where I knew everything and my parents were morons. I try to do things differently...I'm very strict on somethings, and other things I'm not. Again, it's a balance.

I abhor when people say, "Look at the Columbine kids...they played video games..." A LOT of kids play video games. Don't assume that ALL kids are going to be violent because of a choice few. That's like saying that women are going to cheat on their husbands and sleep around because of 'Desperate Housewives' or that people are going to jump off buildings just to see if they can fly because of 'Heroes'.

The verse of which you speak is marked in my signature, but for me personally, I don't believe it has anything to do with this situation. I separate fiction from reality. I made the choice to do that. Some people haven't, and that's fine as well. I've played a couple of the Grand Theft Auto games. They're entertaining to me as driving games, but beyond that I don't get too much enjoyment out of playing them. I don't think it's any more wrong to play a game with such content than it is to watch a movie or read a book with such content. Fiction is fiction to me. Again, to each their own. Each person must be convinced in his or her mind that what they do is right.

Yes, very true. But some parents do not want to deal with the "hassle" of parental responsibility and rather have mouth pieces and grand standers do the censoring/work for them.

Exactly, it's absurd to make such a blunt connection. It shows ignorance and fear on the part of the vocal opponent.

Many in the media tried to say that the Virgina Tech murderer was influenced by video games - what was discovered after an investigation and interviews with his room mates?

They played video games, yes. But the VTech shooter hated them and never played any of them with the dorm guys.
