Uh, didn't the boys build a house? I think 'mowing the lawn and changing tires' is the tip of the iceburg of what they do...don't they live in the country? And I would be surprised if the older boys did not hold paying jobs.

At least one Duggar boy aspires to be an artist. He's obviously being raised to be an insensitive chauvinist with a dream like that. [8D] 4 of the girls (the older ones) list their aspirations as jobs that will require education beyond highschool. I don't think they are quite as horribly oppressive as some people assume they are.

And if the older boys hold jobs, couldn't the girls have paid employment as well, assuming they're allowed?

I googled around and it looks like they have twenty acres. That is no happy lawn-mowing job. With that they probably have animals and crops, as well, plus building maintenance, which would fall under the boys' 'outdoor jurisdiction'. I think you are looking for an inequality where there is none.

Do they have animals and crops? I've never seen much beyond a family dog on the TV specials. My SIL's parents have 20 acres, too. But it's almost entirely woods; no lawn mowing there! And hey, maybe if the boys do have to tend to crops and farm animals, they will show it on the upcoming TV special that shows all this job swapping. [;)]

things i do not like about the duggars: they have a steadfast faith. they share their faith the kids seem to share their faith mr. and mrs. d. still look at each other with a twinkle in their eye they are all well groomed. they are all cheerful a great deal of the time. the whole family works hard. they like babies mr d. has more than one source of income. they are not using public assistance. they are wise with their money their kids enjoy each other's company. the family eats together regularly they invite cameras into their home as if they have nothing to hide they express a great deal of gratitude towards God... ...if more families were like this we would be in big trouble. I used to think they were extreme, but since then have realized that I have had conservative Baptist friends that live just like they do that I never had a problem with, and that were happy. DH and I were just talking about this last night. Not the lifestyle for me, but given that they are self-sufficient and seem well-adjusted and happy, I can't criticize too much. I'm not sure I personally would have gone after this degree of media attention (I remember seeing magazine articles about them when they had 13 or so kids), but nobody seems any the worse for it. My dad is child #10 out of 15, and trust me, they aren't all as well-adjusted as adults as the Dugger kids seem to be.

I voted Julianna and Jacob (surprise surprise![:D]) - which so far are the top votes. I, personally, wouldn't have 18 kids - but they're providing them with a godly home, so who I am to argue with their choice? My parents are from large families, so it's not that odd for me, coming from a Mennonite background where birth control used to be frowned upon (and still would be in the more conservative Mennonite circles). My dad was from a family of 9, my mom from a family of 9, my second dad (first dad died when I was two) from a family of 14 and his first wife (who died in a car accident) from a family of 12 kids. DH's mom is from a family of 19 kids (beat the Duggars so far!), and DH's dad is the small family of the bunch - only 5 kids.

When I was very ill and could not lift my head, she read me the book of her mother's family. While she read I counted up all the first cousins on her mom's side alone and there were 85! My friends can travel anywhere they want and never stay in a hotel, lol. It is very neat and I have seen no negative repurcussions in her family for having large numbers of kids (she is in her 70s now, btw).
