Uh, didn't the boys build a house? I think 'mowing the lawn and changing tires' is the tip of the iceburg of what they do...don't they live in the country? And I would be surprised if the older boys did not hold paying jobs.

The entire family worked on that house, skirts and all. At any rate, it's built now.
And if the older boys hold jobs, couldn't the girls have paid employment as well, assuming they're allowed?

I googled around and it looks like they have twenty acres. That is no happy lawn-mowing job. With that they probably have animals and crops, as well, plus building maintenance, which would fall under the boys' 'outdoor jurisdiction'. I think you are looking for an inequality where there is none.

Do they have animals and crops? I've never seen much beyond a family dog on the TV specials. My SIL's parents have 20 acres, too. But it's almost entirely woods; no lawn mowing there!
And hey, maybe if the boys do have to tend to crops and farm animals, they will show it on the upcoming TV special that shows all this job swapping.

I bathed my younger siblings from the time I was about 8, until they were old enough to bath on their own. At 13 I was babysitting on a regular schedule. But that's not the point...
I don't really agree with "gender roles" either, I think it leaves both side ill equipped for the "real" world and downplays the importance of a woman's education.

no, I just wanted to see what the point of the thread was since it was getting off like the last one did into the Gothard's teachings, etc. So I just wanted to know where you hoped to go with this...if you wanted it to keep lighthearted and on the topic of the new baby and names, or if you wanted it to go that way again.

Yes..although some healthy discussion is ok..However, I would rather keep Gothard out of it, that's really another thread. I used to think they were extreme, but since then have realized that I have had conservative Baptist friends that live just like they do that I never had a problem with, and that were happy. On the other hand, I don't want to be close minded to other's opinions. How's that for a muddy answer? I guess, opinion ok, flaming debate, or too much judgement, or too much Gothard talk, no (of course if some brand new poster comes in just 'cause they've been googling the Duggars, I guess I hafta be patient ).
Wanna know a secret? When I was a teenager, I used to dream of having a family like that. I think the only difference in my fantasy was that the names I liked started with different letters.

I have been wanting to start one on the Gothard's for a while now...I just need to figfure out where to put it...I will start it here in the Parenting and the mods can move it if it's not in the right place.

DH and I were just talking about this last night.
Not the lifestyle for me, but given that they are self-sufficient and seem well-adjusted and happy, I can't criticize too much. I'm not sure I personally would have gone after this degree of media attention (I remember seeing magazine articles about them when they had 13 or so kids), but nobody seems any the worse for it.
My dad is child #10 out of 15, and trust me, they aren't all as well-adjusted as adults as the Dugger kids seem to be.

My parents are from large families, so it's not that odd for me, coming from a Mennonite background where birth control used to be frowned upon (and still would be in the more conservative Mennonite circles). I have a friend from Mennonite stock in Minnesota. When I was very ill and could not lift my head, she read me the book of her mother's family. While she read I counted up all the first cousins on her mom's side alone and there were 85! My friends can travel anywhere they want and never stay in a hotel, lol. It is very neat and I have seen no negative repurcussions in her family for having large numbers of kids (she is in her 70s now, btw).
