I too come from this type of background...not to mention ILs do this for every event....wedding, birthdays, house warming parties (on your third house with your fourth husband)

Unless it is a close friend or immediate relative, I do not attend and I do not send a gift.
For the couple who is living together and already has a household set up, I do not give a gift.
