Not sure if this completely relates to this specific circumstance, but it was the first thing that came to mind. It does relate to altering your body, since Timothy was circumcised to fit in well with the Jews.

1 Corinthians 9:19-22
For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

That does beg the question how anyone knew Timothy was circumcised. [8|]

SonInMe1 -> RE: Tatoos and piercings (5/25/2008 8:09:09 AM)

Since in most states getting a tattoo under the age of 18 is illegal...wouldn't this youth pastor be promoting illegal acts by wearing..and being proud of...tattoos?

I don't think so. That would be like saying people who are proud of driving or voting are promoting illegal acts. There are just some things you can't do when you're young.

everythingat -> RE: Tatoos and piercings (5/25/2008 12:49:55 PM)

Agreed, stellaluna, on what SonInMe1 brought up.

When you asked the question about Timothy, did you mean how the Jews would have known? I honestly don't have an answer for that. I'm sure someone else could provide an answer, I've never even thought about it. Then again, I haven't thought much about that verse that mentions Timothy's circumcision. In my head, the only logical explanations would be bathing? And maybe it came up in conversation...I don't know.

Maybe he was standing on some stairs and a stiff wind blew his toga up 'round his knees (vis a vis Marilyn Monroe in the "7 Year Itch")...?

I have only been a Christian for 3 years but, from my understanding of Romans; I think tattoos and piercings are not okay if other Christians cannot get past the tattoo to see your heart and hear your message.

There is a part in Romans where Paul talks about eating meat that was sacficed to idols. Doing so became a sin when done in front of others that could not get past the law. Basically, it says, don't do anyting that confuses weaker Christians. What is okay in private or amoung those close to us, may not be okay to do in front of other Christians.

I am sure one of our bible gurus can explain more, or remember the exact passage. I don't have a bible in front me.

slimon11 -> RE: Tatoos and piercings (5/26/2008 12:31:42 AM)

I found it! Romans 14.

13Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way. 14As one who is in the Lord Jesus, I am fully convinced that no food is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for him it is unclean. 15If your brother is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy your brother for whom Christ died. 16Do not allow what you consider good to be spoken of as evil. 17For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, 18because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.

19Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. 20Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. 21It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall.

22So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.

Don't like them on any person..... Waste of $$, time and they look silly and will look more silly in ten years.....

Is that too opiniated? I hope so....

Solus -> RE: Tatoos and piercings (5/27/2008 3:19:03 PM)

I don't see any problem with tattoos or piercings. It is a personal decision, not a moral decision. That being said if the tattoo is say 666 or something against God, then it is bad. If it is just an abstract design or something else that is not anti-god then it is harmless.

sign4Him316 -> RE: Tatoos and piercings (6/16/2008 10:42:42 PM)

I only have piercings on my ears and I hate needles enough NOT to get a tattoo.

greatdivide46 -> RE: Tatoos and piercings (6/16/2008 10:54:48 PM)

Personally when I see someone like Todd Bentley, who looks like that tattoed man at the carnival side show, I am completely turned off to the message he's tryin' to purvey. To me he just looks evil and I read somewhere that we are to avoid even the appearance of evil. But, hey, that's just me. If you have a tattoo that I'll never see, I'm fine with that. [:)]

A lot of things look evil to different people. If we were to apply that verse as many people do (and as you seem to be taking it), then we need to stop posting here - we all know what kind of evils are on the internet, and we don't want anyone thinking we're looking at those!

faroukfarouk -> RE: Tatoos and piercings (6/17/2008 10:06:05 AM)

So I guess your appreciation for some tattoo designs is less than your dislike for needles, then?

Take care.

I agree with what a lot are saying here, it's up to the individual and their personal taste and convictions whether they're going to get tattoed or not. I know pastors with tattoos and they are some of most godly men I've ever met. But also not to go overboard or I think it borders on vanity. I don't have any, and it isn't the needles I believe is so much keeping me from it, but having ink on myself that I couldn't remove is the dissuader. That said, I am rather fascinated with tattoo art, as long as it's on other folks, it can be really beautiful.

I feel the same with piercings, about it being up to the individual to get it done. I have two per ear myself. Although one of my biggest pet peeves is to see a young child, especially an infant or toddler, with their ears pierced. Not to offend anyone who has or knows of a child with that, but I think it's rather selfish on the part of whoever decided to do that to them.

And here I was thinkin' bout gettin' a nice, big, fat tatoo right on my forehead. (not 666 though) Something like "Child of God." Now what a witness that would be! [;)]

Rena:

Hi. BTW, you may want to be a bit careful who you are around when you say that about young kids with ear piercings because for hundreds of millions of Latin American people it's the normal practice for a nurse on maternity wards to go round and 'hacer los agujeros' (literally, 'do the holes') to all the little girls. We need to watch that just because we may or may not have certain preferences as individuals ourselves, others who do differently may think their culture is being subjected to derogatory discourse (I know it wasn't intentional with you).

Yes, 2 in each ear is nice, like you say.

Take care.

horsepill -> RE: Tatoos and piercings (6/17/2008 7:53:19 PM)

I humbly apologize and I definitely do not want to offend anyone's traditions or cultures, and I am sorry, I sure didn't mean to insult or be derogatory to anyone in any way. I realize that it is practiced in some cultures, though learning that it's also a Latin American way and there's actually a name for the procedure is new to me. It's nice to learn something new everyday. I meant I didn't care to see people who simply up and decide to trot a child down to the local jewelry/cosmetic boutique to have their ears pierced simply because they want it done for the child themselves.

Again, I'm very sorry if I've offended in any way.

spdrgrl.603 -> RE: Tatoos and piercings (6/17/2008 11:53:21 PM)

kind of anwered this in another question about tattooes and christians. i pasted it below. i'm responding cuz as people we are too judgemental of those who are different. even christians are eager to finger point. it depends on the tattooes (picture wise). god still uses christians who are pierced and tattooed. to me, i appreicated it as a form of art. i have three tattooes, an angel on my back, jesus with a psalm on my arm, and a half sleeve of jesus pulling peter out of the water with god descending on himas a dove (see in the bible jesus' baptism).

this is a hefty subject. this and abortion. i have three tattoos. an angle on my lower back, jesus with a psalm on my left arm, and a half sleeve of jesus pulling perter from the water with god descending on jesus as a dove (see in the bible when jesus was baptized). i believe that as long as the tattoos have no heathen gods (like egyptian), anything evil (like satan or demons. this would damage our spirit), or tattoos of departed loved ones (morning for the dead) it is okay. my tattoos are inspirational psalms and scenes from the bible.

now onto the most used verses.... lets skip leviticus. i want to go to the other most used verse of corinthians. verse from -1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” Non- tattooed Christians don’t hesitate to make the connection to tattoos and avoid seeing it in its full context. There was a new community of Christians developing in Corinth and the new Christians were of pagan origin. St. Paul was warning them of the dangerous practices of their pagan neighbors who used ritual prostitutes to celebrate the Greek Goddess of Love, Aphrodite. During St. Paul’s time, ritual prostitutes were a common practice that had to be abolished. St. Paul wrote to Corinthians stating that we belong to God, brought about through His son Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, and the deadly sin of subjecting to false Gods through ritual prostitutes. Sexual immorality is a sin against the body which houses the Holy Spirit and is a direct sin against God.
christians back then also tattooed small crosses on their wrists so no one when they died could deny them a christian burial. we could go on but the subject of tattooes in biblical history goes waaaayyy back. i have to look it up sometime but i remember reading that one of the saints had a christian tattoo on his upper thigh.

in his name, Amen.

Yes, exactly.

And I guess it's not unusual for grandmothers, pastors' wives, etc to have gotten double ear piercings either, right?

(But what do I know?)

Rena: Don't worry, no prob.
