Nope... foam comes of of organic, too. I'm like Chelle, though, it only happens to me when I boil it. I just scrape it off and discard it.

FYI, Chickens and pork are not allowed to have hormones used on them, but they are allowed to have antibiotics. Cows are allowed to have both hormones and antibiotics.

Our chicken is antibiotic free... I think Tyson is also advertised that way.

Tyson does not currently medicate their chickens...which from the standpoint of a grower (mine and hubby's families) is why all their chickens are currently sick. SO I don't know which is worse. These chickens are not getting all kinds of problems. Their no antibiotics policy might be changing....

Well, I guess I would have to find another brand to buy... I don't ingest abx unless my doctor prescribes them

I dont know their official standpoint on changing that, but I just know that they are having TONS of chickens die because they are not being medicated and have all sorts of diseases, which in turn costs the growers ALOT of money, since they get paid for how many live. But thats just another one of Tyson's poor practices...but thats another thread for another day and I need to watch my blood pressure.

Our local dairy packaging says they don't use either. Knowing farmers and having worked on farms who contribute to this dairy, I can say that is true. If a cow is on either for any reason, their milk is kept separate and dumped.

Empowerd...

If you have read any of my other thread about my marriage in the marriage section, then you'd know that I'm basically a door mat...I am really frightened of confrontation, and I let people go over my head when I shouldn't...I give in too easily on many accounts... So, this is a big deal, what happened this evening...

There is a nearby grocery store where I do all my shopping. Each time we go there, they give our children balloons. They would come home, fight over them, and lose them, and they'd pop, and I'd be concerned about who was going to get it in their mouth first and suffocate. So, hubby and I decided...no more balloons from the grocery store...at least not as regularly as they were getting them. Did I abide with my OWN opinion on this? No...we go in, the cashiers give balloons, and I walk out feeling stepped on again. NOT TODAY, MY FRIEND, NOT TODAY! LOL It really feels good to be empowered. Anyway, cashier gives ds1 a balloon...while she's trying to get balloons for the other two, I am paying for my groceries. In the meantime, cashier gets people in her line, so she leaves getting the balloons for another time, and goes to do her JOB. So, two other children start whining and crying because one has a balloon and he others don't...so, I pay for my groceries, walk over to ds1, take the balloon away, give it back to the cashier.
Me: "Here you go. I don't want him having one when the others can't have one."
Lady: "WHAT?!"
Me: "I don't want him to have one when the others can't have one."
Lady: "Who SAYS they can't have one?"
Me: "Well, we have to go."

She looks at me like I'm the meanest mom in the world, and I walk away. Now, I'm new at this stand-up-for-yourself stuff, so I realized that the conversation should have went like this.

Me: "Here is the balloon back."
Lady: "WHY?!"
Me: "They can't have balloons today.
Lady: "Who SAYS they can't have one?"
Me: "Hello, nice to meet you, I am their mother, and I say what they can and cannot have. We have to go."

I'm sure I would have gotten another nasty look too...but ah, who cares?! I actually stood up for myself today, and it feels pretty nice. I feel a weight lifted already...and it was just a balloon! LOL

I buy Laura's Beef because the cows are raised without antibiotics or added hormones. It cost a bit more than regular lean ground beef, but not enough to make me not buy it. A lot of times I hit the manager's specials and I get it a lot cheaper so I stock up.

I buy Laura's some, too.

Yes, that's correct. Farmers are allowed to not use either hormones or antibiotics on cows and advertise them as "natural" and "organic" (if they are fed organic feeds.) They are not allowed to advertise as antibiotic-free if they use any antibiotic ever. When antibiotics are used, they must observe a waiting period to make sure the product (whether dairy or meat) doesn't have residual antibiotics in the product derived from them. It sounds like this last thing is what your local dairy is referring to: they use antibiotics, but observe the USDA rules for keeping residual antibiotics out of the dairy.

The "true organic spirit" is that a cow isn't fed a "feed", but is set lose in a verdant pasture to graze (or a chicken is allowed free roam and to eat grasses and bugs as it forages.) However, that means less animals per acre of land, which is less profitable plus it gives those "smaller farmers" a disadvantage because our grocery store buyers expect volume from one company. They don't expect to deal with 100 different cow (or whatever) farmers, just a couple of big ones. Having so many animals per acre that don't eat as green a diet and don't get as much exercise, also increases the need for antibiotics, the same way a lazy person with a poor diet tends to be sicker and pass the infection to those in close quarters.

The best way is to know your farmer and see what goes on for yourself. Organic and natural is such a big business that the USDA has relaxed rules on what can be called organic to appease food producers who want to get on the bandwagon. In some ways, organic certification is hard to get... but you can cut some corners and still get it using many modern farming ideas that fall short of the "true organic spirit."

It's a fascinating subject... at least, to me.

Not to change the subject, but I am really nervous because our next door neighbors invited us to dinner Saturday night. We have lived next to each other for 5 years and this is the first time it has worked out for us to go over there. I am nervous because we don't know them that well, they are older, and we have a toddler. You never know how he is going to act or what kind of mood he is going to be in so it should be interesting. I have to call and confirm in a bit, but I am really nervous. She invited us though and I don't won't to be rude just because I am being a weirdo. Oh well who knows we may have a blast and Hunter may be an angel that night. They have one daughter who will be going into the 9th grade so maybe she will occupy him for the evening.

Yes, this is what they do.

There was just a big article in the local paper about most of the dairy farms around here being organic or very close to organic, but not carrying that label because the regulations are a pain in the keister. Most dairy farms around here are very small...30 to 200 head. All family run. Of course, they also constantly struggle financially because they are small.

That's really sad. I wish it wasn't like that. I really wish we could get back to a more localized food system, but I just don't see it happening.

Chelle- Don't worry about Hunter!! I remember my sil worrying incessantly about her boys being a pain, and they never were. Sure, they acted goofy sometimes... sure, they said inappropriate things sometimes... sure, they got too loud or rambunctous for the social situation they were in... but they were such cute boogers that no one cared. People understand how toddlers are and have had experience with them. If this is an older couple, they probably had a toddler years ago. Odds are it will remind them of what they loved about their own children. If they didn't have children, he can be a great ice breaker. Dh and I don't have children and we have had a blast with toddlers in our home. They are loads more fun when they are a novelty.

Nationally, no, but I think it could happen here. If the economy really crashes, I think this area would pull together and be alright, because so many are knowledgable, able to have large gardens, cut back where needed, and many mechanically inclined people. It's the city folks who don't know how to do anything themselves that will be in biggest trouble, I think.

so do you buy chicken breasts frozen or the whole chicken?
Here in Australia I have only ever seen a whole chicken frozen (or the nasty bits of everything rolled in and covered in breadcrumbs).

I only buy boneless/skinless chicken breast. I can't stand having to deal with bones or carcass.

Thanks for the encouragement ladies!

I buy boneless, skinless chicken breast for the most part, but when Kroger runs a sale on their whole fryers for .79 lb I stock up. I roast it for a meal then debone what we don't eat for another meal such as tacos. I don't get to grossed out with handling raw meat so with a sale like that I can't beat it.

We buy only boneless/skinless with the rare roaster mixed in there. I pay $1.85ish per lb for b/s so it's still a fantastic deal.

I can usually find bl/sl on sale for $1.79/lb, and stock up then. It's not worth it to me to buy the kind I have to mess with. I am not a meat lover.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just made my first ever cheesecake. We'll see how it comes out. It takes me a long time to try new things because I'm afraid I'll mess them up. Brian's birthday is Sunday and he doesn't like cake. Some years, I have bought cheesecake, and last year, I made an ice cream cake. This year, I decided to make cheesecake...chocolate cheesecake. It's in the oven. Pray it comes out good. It looks decent so far. I don't like cheesecake though, so I'll have to rely on what other people tell me. LOL
We'll celebrate tomorrow, since we're all together. I had enough cheesecake stuff to make two, so one for my mom's and one for his stepdad's. Then on his birthday, we'll get subs and take the kids to the playground, I think.
I buy chicken different ways, depending on what I am doing and who is eating it. I mostly buy packs bone-in with breasts or leg-thigh, whole chickens, or boneless breasts. Sometimes I buy cutlets or tenderloins, but less often.
Whatcha think?
Cheesecake
It looks much more chocolatey IRL. And it's funny...one of them is kinda sunk in the middle and the other one is puffed up a little. Who in the world knows...LOL.
And yes, my stove needs to be taken apart and scrubbed.
ETA...I'm going to drizzle chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, and sprinkle sliced almonds on the top.
