I respectively disagree because the Kingdom Heirs were almost shut out as well and "True To The Call" didn't even make the Top 5 Album of the Year list even though it was inarguably one of the most solid SG projects of 2007.

The Fan Awards leave me scratching my head this year. As noted above, the red-hot Triumphant didn't even make several usual categories and they haven't changed stylistically...

I'm with ya, but let's remember the Fan Awards are only a popularity contest. It just so happened more fans of one artist happened to vote for their favorite than fans of another artist. I never considered the Fan Awards (or any award show for that matter) to be a measure of success (IMO). It is just a measure of your core fan base getting out the vote.

**At least I won't have a tough time making my final vote decisions.

This is true. With or without Singing News Fan Awards, the groups mentioned are Class A, no doubt about it.

I was somewhat disappointed in the finalists for many of the categories. I want all of MY favorites to win and several of mine didn't make the final five. But my congratulations go to all of the artists!

I totally agree. We all want our favorites to win. I think they named the awards correctly---Fan Awards. There is a lot of God serving, talented people out there and unfortunately not everyone can be in the top 5.

While many of my picks on the awards are different from yours I've love to hear this quartet sing!

*Dove Brothers being shut out again after having a monster year.

I think their stylistic changes are being very well received by radio, critics, and industry observers, but aren't received quite as well by the fans of their original traditional sound.

(Just my personal opinion.)

I think we will have to agree to disagree on that. I can't believe a Southern Gospel traditionalist would have a problem with the current sound/style of the Dove Brothers. If they did, they would have a problem with 80% of the quartets on the road today.

I think there are many groups - Triumphant, Kingdom Heirs, Perrys, Legacy Five, Greater Vision, etc. - that fall between where the Dove Brothers started on the spectrum and where they are now.

The spectrum is really not that far from where the Dove Brothers first started. If you see them in concert, their stage performance/style is not much different than when the group first started. They sing songs from, not only their current albums but their older recordings as well.

When an artist uses a little artistic freedom when recording new albums (as the Dove Brothers did with their current recording Life), IMO it shows growth. I tend to enjoy that more than the same 'stale' album being released year after year. I understand everyone has a different opinion on that.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Dove Brothers would try something a little bit different when recording their next album and I look forward to hearing it.

I haven't been fortunate enough to catch them live in concert yet (other than possibly a NQC set or two). They don't come my way often.

To me, their last three albums sound very different from their first 3-5, and I don't think it's just the vocalists (though I do love John Rulapaugh's voice!)

I would agree with that, but that isn't a bad thing. I still think Never The Same is their best album to date, with Life, Anything But Ordinary and their table project Shout It Out not too far behind. As much as I liked the original line-up, I prefer the current line-up so much more.

As a result of what they are doing right now, they are my favorite quartet of 2008.

Interesting. I like both the original and current configurations, but I think I like the original just a bit more.

I think in looking at the nominees I see 2 things that are very 'telling'. You have the groups that get a lot of 'face time' they travel a lot to a wider area for lack of a better description. Some are in the 'high publicity' group. Either way they are seen a lot.

Some of the folks that are excellent but seem to be missing don't seem to fall into those high profile groups so unless you are a fan of theirs you may not see them as much. And you are going to vote for what you know!

That is true. It reminds me of the media spectacle surrounding the Presidential primaries. Two contenders get all the 'face time' while the third is usually left out of the media reports.

I don't know if it is intentional but even the Southern Gospel media seems biased in what groups receive 'face time'/constant publicity compared to others.

A lot of that has to do with their booking agent getting them to the right places. A lot of it has to do with record companies promoting their groups. I don't think it's as much the media as the folks 'backing' the groups and how they do their jobs.
