Check ou the jobs listings on the SInging News Web site. THere are always groups looking for singers. THat is where I used to go when I needed to fill a position.

Welcome TeddyRayBullard, good to have you here.
I couldn't agree more with your post about J.D. I was enthralled with him as a kid, but the older I got and the more I learned about singing and music, the more I like other basses.

Welcome Teddy Ray Bullard,
I admire all of the older retired bass singers. So many styles to choose from. I like all the great bass singers. Who's to say who was the best. I am just a great fan of all. Big Chief-Showman,
Tim Riley-solid to the bone, London Parris- So strong, and on and on and on. Who knows. We may see Teddy in there. Wow! Live the dream.

Well, yessir, *technically*, but how long it will take me to get there is another matter altogether.  Actually though, I feel really led to sing, and I want it badly, so driving a long distance isnt a concern of mine. I just wanna be out there doin' the work!

None were smoother than Armond Morales (Weatherford years, then Jake Hess and the Imperials) pre CCM time. I don't think any bass carried a lead part better than George Younce. The Chief (Jim Weatherington) was about as good as any I've ever listened to. He had a full, deep voice that carried the part well. One bass singer that I don't think ever received the recognition that he deserved was Fulton Nash. He sang with the Weatherford Quartet 60's and early to mid 70's. The man could carry the part as accurate as any bass. He was smooth, deep and full. The Weatherfords had changed to a primarily church emphasis in their ministry, as while I respect what Earl Weatherford's decision was, it kept them out of the lime light, but Fulton Nash was a great singer all the same.

I say J.D. may have been lower, but London was a far better singer. And check some of the videos on youtube of London. He's not eating a mic to be heard down low like J.D. always did. I loved them both, but London was much better IMO.
At least we agree on one thing that microphones do not taste good.

Anybody remember Tommy Thompson? He was a great bass singer with the Stamps. I think he was with the Statesmen in later years. Was he with any other groups?

Yes,
I remember him with both quartets but do not remember him singing with anyone else.

Jay Simmons was a great bass. He sang with the Plaismen Quartet and I believe followed Rusty Goodman. They probably produced some of the great Album sounds with the Bunch twins, Howard Welborn and I believe Eddie Crook played the piano.

Check out the old video of the Inspirations singing Joshua on Youtube. I believe the bass singer is Marlin Shubert(?). He really does a great job on that song.

Has anyone mentioned Big Jim Waites who sang with Otis and James McCoy, Conner Hall and Hovie LIster in the Homeland Harmony Quartet, the Rebels Quartet and I believe sang with the Vaughn Quartet back in the 1930's. At one time he was referred to as the Dean of Bass Singers?
