I just made a profession of faith yesterday. So now, I am officially recognized as a member of the LCMS, which is a Christian family, who focuses on evangelism.

Thank you. The church I became a member at really focuses on evangelism a lot, which I really like. I also love that they take the Bible seriously.

Hi. I believe according to the orthodox Lutheran doctrine. I don't attend an LCMS church. I attend a very small church that has been separated from a very legalistic church that beared the "Lutheran" name, but in fact, as time has passed, they have deviated from the true Lutheran doctrine. Sad, really. I am in agreement with the LCMS and the WELS doctrines. What exactly do you know to be the differences? I believe the WELS is even more conservative than the LCMS. What do you know of this?

Hello jlady!

This is something the WELS do that I don't agree with. Meaning, they forbid you to even pray with other Christians of different groups. You can't even pray with others.

http://www.lcms.org/pages/internal.asp?NavID=2149

If you click on this, you will see the main differences between the two synods.

About the WELS being more conservative, I don't think that is the best word to use. I think the word to use is they are more stringent. If you read the article, you'll see what I mean.

Ps103 -> RE: Are there any LCMS Lutherans around here? (5/22/2008 12:21:35 PM)

I thought there was a thread about WELS, but I can't find it, so it must have been purged.

JesKlu -> RE: Are there any LCMS Lutherans around here? (5/22/2008 12:22:24 PM)

Oh, and has anyone here heard that the LCMS and the AALC (American Association of Lutheran Churches) are now in Altar and Pulpit Fellowship?

http://www.taalc.org/Assets/AALC_LCMS_Fellowship_Protocol.pdf

I think this is exciting! I believe ALL Confessional Lutherans should stand up together to fight for God's Holy Word.

The AALC is a small Confessional Lutheran Synod.

Another LCMS Pastor not happy about the direction the synod is heading !!! Any Thoughts ???

It seems that the cancelation of Issues Ect. on KFUO radio was the straw that broke the camels back for many in the Synod. I did listen to the show alot and it was awesome. Sorry to see it gone.

I am sorry for addressing the WELS as being a mean group. I was wrong. What I meant to say is that I disagree with them about their definition of fellowship, and that I disagree with them when they say you should not pray with other Christians. I agree that we should not join Altar and Pulpit fellowship unless we are in doctrinal agreement, but my opinion prayer is different and does not require full doctrinal agreement among Christians.

Again, I am sorry. Please forgive me for speaking this way about the WELS Christians.

Hello FREELUTH!

About Issues Etc., I think it had to do with finances, not necessarily just wanting to cancel it just to cancel it. I read the whole FAQ's on the LCMS website surrounding the issue. About the controversy in the LCMS, if you go on to the AALC website, they do address that there are controversies going on, but I do not think the liberals are going to win because they Synod sticks up for sound doctrine and Biblical Christianity. I have faith that God's Hand will be on the matter and that God's Word will Triumph.

You must be talking about SEMINEX. There's a great book about this time by the late Rev. Kurt Marquart titled "Anatomy of an Explosion". Also, even though it may seem as though there is a great deal of liberalism poking its head about in certain circles of the LCMS, the great majority of pastors, pastors-to-be and lay people are still confessional. It's interesting, however, to see and listen to the ones who are referred to as "liturgical thugs" - you'd think they were Roman Catholic or Greek Orthodox and have forgotten what was wriiten in the Treatise and Smalcald Articles, Part III. It seems throughout the Body of Christ we fight the same battles, over and over again...

There is are ALTS (American Lutheran Theological Seminary) and AALC offices at Concordia Theological Seminary, Ft Wayne. They (ALTS and AALC) seminarians are trained at the LCMS seminary there.

Hello Peter!

I do remember that pastor and his congregation. He was a nice Pastor. But I still have my small disagreements with that Lutheran Synod. Other than that, I pretty much agree with everything they teach.

Actually, that's me, but I'm not a pastor. I'm a layperson, but I do host and produce a radio show in Brevard county Florida.

I often get caught up in lots of work for the show as well as my full time job, so I haven't been able to get back to this post in a while. I used to be a moderator around for a long time. I left here for the longest time and wound up doing radio.

The reason I brought up "calvinists and arminians" is because the discussions sometimes seem as though that's the debate that is going on more often then not around here. I've tried a couple of times to get into those conversations and try to bring a Lutheran Perspective to them, but more often than not I'm misunderstood by the people involved, which is shame. I seem to be better understood in person than on these forums.

We don't consider ourselves a "denomination". We're a "synod", which means walking together. We hold to the Book of Concord as our confession of Faith, which says many of the things that Evangelicals would agree with and understand, namely who Jesus Christ is, the inerrancy of scripture... So it's more accurate to talk about confessional Lutheranism in the same discussion as Calvinism or Arminianism. Or at least I would hope so.

Either way, I'm glad to see there's some other LCMS Lutherans here. I recently joined the church by way of membership myself, but was attending for a long time before that. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to this forum more often.

I agree. We are a synod, not a denomination. The only "Lutheran" synod that I wouldn't really call Lutheran is the ELCA. Only because they condone activities/behaviors that the Bible doesn't. They don't hold the Bible to be the Inerrant Word of God like those who are in the LCMS, or any other Confessional Lutheran Synod, who hold to the Book of Concord as their confession of faith.

Anyway, welcome to the LCMS. I am a new member/convert myself, who just came out of the Roman Catholic Church. I just made my profession of faith/confirmation last Sunday, on Trinity Sunday.

Matt as I said earlier I am not an LCMS member. I am absolutly a confessional Lutheran. I have enjoyed reading your blog. I have been meaning to listen to radio program. Just have not got there yet. Thanks for the good work !!!!!

Mattumanu -> RE: Are there any LCMS Lutherans around here? (5/28/2008 2:36:45 AM)

Thankyou Freeluth, and thankyou everybody. The internet's a funny thing, sometimes you don't know how far a simple blog can reach.

I have to say, back when I was on the forums before there didn't seem to be any Lutherans around, in fact a number of posters referred to Lutherans as "Catholic lite", whatever that means. I guess that in today's climate a lot of Evangelicals and protestants don't know exactly what to make of us.

I've been up too late, and the files for this Sunday's show just finished uploading, so I'm off to bed.

Hello Jessica

I have only a few moments (Jessica why did you become part of the LCMS?) New member of what? What is the definition of a convert?
Roman Catholic fathers... what of them, what of the faithful followers of Christ Jesus in the Roman Catholic Church, are you converting/turning your face from them. Not convert something else maybe rethinking is a better word.

Doghouse -> RE: Are there any LCMS Lutherans around here? (5/28/2008 6:01:24 AM)

There is an LCMS Church down the road from me (I pass it going to my in-laws house). Very nice looking - fairly new. It says "Missouri Synod" right there on the sign below the name of the Church.

Question: if I see a sign in front of a Lutheran Church that just says "so-and-so" Lutheran Church, how do I know which type (synod) Church it is? What synod is it most likely affiliated with? Is the Wisconsin Synod more common north, and the Missouri Synod more common in the south?

Is worship significantly different? Or are the differences mainly within the instruction and pastoral guidance given?

Nice thread Matt.

Maybe convert wasn't the nicest choice of words. More like, it is returning back to the 1st 500 years of Christianity, the original catholic church, before the Mary and Saint stuff started to creep in. There are very catholic elements in Lutheran worship. We are Catholic because of the Historical creeds, worship, and sacramentalism, and we are Evangelical because of our trust in the good news of Christ, that in His cross he has saved us by sheer grace for a life of Christian freedom.

Jessica
