BlindLemon5103 -> RE: The Doors remixes: To buy or not to buy? (6/5/2008 3:20:21 PM)

UPDATE: I gave in and bought the rest of the Doors re-masters! I only paid full price for two of the six, so I figured I would take the plunge. They are noticeably different in some cases, and not too much different in others. "The Soft Parade" has a longer spoken word intro, there is more harmonica and Morrison whoops and hollers in "Roadhouse Blues", a longer intro to "L.A. Woamn" and an extra verse in "Cars Hiss By My Window"...just to name a few of the more obvious differences. I am enjoying the listening experience so far, but to this old guy's pre-conditioned ears, the '99 re-masters still rule the day. On the new ones, the drums are in the forefront and the singing is pushed back in the mix a bit, as I mentioned before. The overall effect is to lose a bit of the Doors' trademark "dark psychedelic sound" in favor of a straight ahead rock approach. Not for all tastes, but interesting. I'll keep both sets. They are complementary to one another. Not to mention there are bonus tracks on the newer discs. Nothing earth-shattering there, but worth hearing.
