Well here is the deal with me atleast if offends my AA, brothers and sisters then it is wrong. I would think if this bar owner put a regular monkey, or ape it might have more racial overtones. CG is so cute, but like I said if anything causes offense do not do it. In truth, I would not wear it anyway, thinking about it. I am not going to do anything to hurt anyone, if possible, or with intent.
I am not your T-Shirt type woman, anyway in public, for the most part. Just on rare occasion I wear T-shirts., I dress in lady like clothes, nice shirts. I am well dressed, because I am a foo foo woman. I for sure would not wear one making a political statement. Sorry not me, and what WWJD?

Behold, the Fifth Spiritual Law of Salvation.

Let's put that on a T-shirt.

While the T-shirt itself can be without racial foundation only someone living in a cave the last 400 years can pretend that people are not going to derived from it racism because of what has and is going on in the world. I didn't grow up in the South, but I did grow up in South Sacramento( a very, very diverse area) and I heard more than once white and black kids(and even adults) making references to black and apes…

John

Just what I've said all along, only Yankees and liberals see a link between monkeys and blacks.

I don't know how many times I have to repeat this, but I was born and raised in the Deep South by Southerners and never have I heard anyone in my 56 years use apes/monkeys/babbons or any other primates to describe blacks. The only two animals I've ever heard used in a derogarory way against blacks were coons (which aren't apes or monkeys) and bunnies.

Until I was about 6, I called my mother's youngest brother, "Monkey's Uncle." That made, well, ME the monkey.

Jimbo,
We have had a vastly different experience.

Mine was South Carolina, NW Florida, and SE Alabama. So I cannot speak for all places South. Bigots in those places weren't sophisticated, they were plain spoken and mean, not given to esoteric analogies. If someone said a few monkies were wandering around Main Street, I would have assumed the circus was in town. Nothing more.

No. You have to keep in mind that there are 3 different Floridas: South, Central, and North. Each one is a distinct culture. (The stupidest bigot I ever met was in Central Florida.)

LOL. Now you see what we are going thru with this Tshirt, go thru the site. It is a museum started by a white guy.

Racist artifacts is one of the biggest growing collectors items. I have alot of it.

The Tshirt will probaly become a "item"

I lived through part of the era in the South and through the transition away from it. The T-shirt is from 2008 and I've seen nothing like it before this thread.

Jimbo,

the Tshirt is just a continuation of what has been going on 100's of years.

The T-shirt and the grotesque caricatures on the stamps are not the same thing, IMO. Those stamps are obviously offensive - like the original Amos & Andy shows of the 20s-50s.

I just do not make any connection between blacks and non-human primates.

Sure, I'm very familiar with the the Mammy stereotype. Even though she's another caricature, she's not a monkey or ape.

OK.

Mammy was also displayed as ape.

"Mammy" was actually a slave person, important to plantation life.

She often cooked all the meals, raised all of the children, etc.

Todd-T,

That's why the 'net is so good. I "visit" museums all the time.

Here's some more good ones. He is a white guy who is a Christian, also was involved with NBA? as Chaplain. Joel Freeman.

""See for yourself. The photos you are about to view in a few moments are not so much "Afro Centric" as they are "Truth Centric".

My families museum, one of 12.

This tshirt is racist.

sign.....They'll probaly sell like hotcakes, probaly on ebay already.

As a former collector of racist memobilia, I almost want one!

I used to think I could buy it all off the streets, did'nt see much in MN.

Then I researched the stuff. Too much I could never afford it.

Bill Cosby, Oprah, Whoopi Goldberg, Spike Lee, all are collectors of racist memobilia, they havent been able to buy it all.

It keeps getting made.

You missed the whole point of the comment. But I suppose you felt compelled to work in that bon mot anyway. Get that from a T-shirt too, did ja?

When a, ....I dunno... racially-liberated-white-man pegs someone from the Old South as a bigot, they see racism in any remark. But I saw that everywhere I went in the military. White and from Alabama automatically labeled one as a bigot and ostracized them from the social cliques of the elite. Prejudice is ugly even when it comes from the mind of a racially-liberated-white-man.

Tracy, are you honestly seeing apes in those caricatures? I am thoroughly amazed. I respectfully submit that you have bought into someone else's hysteria.

I said that I am very familiar with the Mammy stereotype, I don't need a history lesson. I was, as I've said, raised in the South by southerners... I even saw the movie.

My question is: do you understand what caricatures are? Mammy and the other caricatures are not covered in hair, hanging from trees, eating bananas, etc. They are portrayed - racially offensive, for sure - with exaggerated features, not as animals.
