Much of chivalry says to me, "You are too stupid to think for yourself and too weak to do for yourself, so you need a man -- a real man, MEEE! -- to do for you."
Some chivalry also says to me, "I am uncomfortable in my skin and with my real self, so I must be perceived as necessary for your existence as well as seen as a hero to you."
Further, some of it says, "I would rather be a dead hero to you than live out the realities of life." I have seen it with my own eyes: men who would rather be dead heroes, because they don't have the guts to live. So sad.
