I take less trips into town and combine (library, grocery, playgroup) the ones we go to. I was sort of doing that before though. We drive to see family less (2-3 hours away). We drive to towns to go shopping less. I stock up more on foods (canned goods, flour, cheese, cereal) that will last. I buy more local food to help keep food prices down and support the local economy.

We are cutting down on trips. We live in a tiny, rural town of about 1,200 that thankfully has a grocery store, library and a park so I can get most of what I need close by (within a mile) or get the kids out for a while if need be. We live 20 miles from our church in the next nearest "larger" town where there is a Wal-Mart, etc. We drive there on Sundays (we've started staying all afternoon between morning and evening services to cut out that extra trip), Wednesday nights and most Tuesday mornings for women's Bible study. But I'll have to start cutting that out. My husband drives his pickup to work 4 days a week (also nearly 20 miles, so 40 miles/day). Each of our vehicles get about 20 mpg. Next tax return we'll be getting hubby a new truck as his is about 13 yrs old and about to die, and we might have to trade our Jeep Liberty in for a small car that gets more like 35-40 mpg. We are blessed and thankful that the Lord has provided thus far, and I believe he will continue to do so. We try to save money where we can, and manage to break even every month. We also supplement our income when needed by hubby selling livestock and farm equipment, and I sell things on Ebay when I can.

He decided to do something nice for us when he went back to work. He took all 4 vechiles and filled them up with gas. All of them were nearly empty! Needless to say, that paycheck is gone!

Right now it's 3.85. However, I have enough points to get 50 cents a gallon off my next fill up. I'm hoping to get up to 60 cents by the time I have to fill up

Today gas was $3.89. It came down a tad since yesterday.

Light sweet crude traded on the NYMEX today just hit $134/barrel. Assuming refiners don't lose any more margin than they already have, we can expect this to increase the price of gas by 10 cents over the next week or two. At some point, the economy will have to slow down. The average American uses about two gallons of crude oil per month. Oil at $134/barrel instead of $100/barrel is taking away roughly $800/year of the disposable income associated with every man, woman, and child in this country. If you have a brokerage account, This might be a good time to reduce your exposure to retail. If securities regulations allowed me to, I'd be buying puts on various high-end retailers. Me? I'm buying a 10 acre farm in North Dakota, an old-fashioned steel plow, and a horse.

The prices here are all over the place. One day last week I paid $3.59 a gallon, and the next day it was $3.85.

My boyfriend and I have started carpooling to work a bit more as my car uses substantially less petrol than his. (He's approx $20/day to work & back 80-90 km) I dunno what the gallon price is but it just hit $1.62/litre last night. Though I saw something on TV this morning about a small town in the north of NT, Australia that's selling petrol at $1.03/litre which is apparently $0.02 above their buy price...so I think we're getting majorly ripped off somewhere.

I don't drive that much since I take the train everyday to work... I usually fill up once every 2 weeks... But wow, it cost me $78 today!... But, overall, it hasn't affected us.... yet[8D]

I'm trying to drive less, combine trips, and carpool when possible. At work, they have been more conscious of case assignments, giving us cases that are closer to our homes and/or office so we can cut down on our traveling. However, they cannot give us any more for travel reimbursements than they have been giving us for the past two years... $.32/mile. Also, I think this will be a great time to trade in the truck for a fuel-efficient vehicle (though I can't afford a hybrid at this time). Right now, I'm looking at some new bills coming my way and when I finish school, I'll have to start paying back the loans. So I'm taking a long, hard look at my finances right now, to see what I can cut out of my budget and if I can supplement my income somehow.

Holy Cow! I just paid $4.11 a gallon! It was the cheapest I could find on my way home! The pump stopped at $100.00 and my tank wasn't even full..... ohmy....... I'm NOT coping well.....

We talked last night about some further steps we could take to eliminate trips if gas prices continue rising. One thing we are considering is subscribing to Netflix again instead of going to the library to borrow movies. If we go to the library, we have to go once a week because you can't keep them longer than that. You can only check them out for four days at a time, and then you have to call and renew them because they aren't set up to renew online. So that's four trips a month just for videos, and it's thirty miles round trip. We could eliminate three of them if we only went once a month for books. You can check them out for four weeks. We're also talking about grocery shopping every two weeks instead of every week. We've tried that in the past and found it really difficult fitting two weeks worth of groceries in one cart, but the Aldi here has really big carts so maybe we could do that. We could go to Aldi in one city once a month, and then combine the other shopping trip with our library trip at Save-a-Lot in another city. The only downside to this is that we use our weekly shopping day as special one-on-one time with the kids, and their turns wouldn't come around as often anymore.

The cheapest here, is $4.15 now IF you look for it. Average in my town is about $4.25 now. It's beyond crazy. We've cut back as far as we can with driving, so we're kind of stuck. Thankfully, we do live in a town with things all nearby, so nothing we need is far away. The three month hiatus for my school commute is helping, but that won't last forever. [>:]

By the time you do the conversion, we are paying over $5 per gallon in my area (SW Ontario, Canada) ... dh and I each have a minivan (we have 4 kids, and am preggers with #5) ... so he needs a vehicle for work, and I enjoy having one to take the kids to various activities (gymnastics, soccer, etc) ... we just combine as much as possible into our trips out - and if we don't NEED something, we don't go anywhere ... there is a nice enough park on the corner!

$4.05 here (as of yesterday). The day before yesterday it was $3.81, and a couple of days before that it was $3.59. Just looking at those jumps makes me dizzy. We went to the movies on Friday evening. We passed a gas station that had gas for $3.81. Three hours later when we drove home, they had hiked it to $3.99.

Most places here are 3.83/3.93/4.13 (does anyone else have a 20 cent gap between mid and high grade). however, one convenience store is only charging 3.99 for high grade. I've noticed that this one chain waits as long as possible to go over $4.00 for high grade and will ignore the 20 cent gap.

Some gas stations here switched back to two different prices for cash and credit. So the cash price is 3.95 to 4.09 The credit price is all over the place, think highest is 4.13 or 4.15

We have only had one station that made a difference between cash and credit, and they've done that ever since we've lived here. But I did notice a couple of stations over in Steamboat posting cash/credit prices just the other day.

Well, I biked to church this morning and so did one of my daughters and my son. The others walked. It helps that the church is only a couple of blocks away. I'm ashamed to say I've driven there more than I haven't.

Our church is 8 miles away. We do have one store that is a mile away, but I can fit everything there in my pantry,... and my freezer is bigger than theirs is. It would be too much for us to bike anywhere worth while.

My dh is thinking about buying a moped to ride to work when the weather permits (which is usually). He is 30 miles away!
