ORIGINAL: PrincessDonna Brian would like to get a motorcycle, but he has enough issues driving a vehicle with lots of steel and fiberglass around him. He drives all back roads to work (no other way), lots of hills, potholes, and wildlife. I'd rather have him alive than pay less for him to get to work.[:o] He picked up the packet for motorcycle licensing the day after he flipped his truck...uh...NO! We'd only be able to use it 6 or so months out of the year here anyway, and it wouldn't qualify as an extra car for us, since he couldn't take any kids with him on it. One thing a lot of folks forget is that motorcycles are a lot of work to maintain. The tires that I use need to get changed every 5000 miles. They also take 5-10 minutes just to warm up sometimes, and there's always something you have to change about every few thousand miles. I recently had to replace the clutch cable; on a Ninja, this entails removing half the fairings and the gas tank; this was a several-hour ordeal for a simple issue with a cable. At the end of the day, there's a lot more maintenance work and materials that go into a motorcycle, and I'm not sure it's worth the added expense. If you're just looking to save money, an interesting option might be a Vespa. Serious injuries on Vespas also run at roughly 1/3 the rate for motorcycles, although some of this may have more to do with the rider (and his/her ability/desire to do 160 down the freeway, do a wheelie in the street, or otherwise do stuff that should be reserved for the track) than the machine. IIRC, the Vespa has a maintenance schedule similar to a car and is very easy to operate.
