We just paid $4.17 here...over $50 to fill up a Hyundai Elantra, although that should last at least 2 weeks. My work car (Ford Escort) is another story- I've already filled it twice this month. Last week I burned through a full tank of gas in 4 work days.

Also, I started riding a bike great exercise and it's a way to get around with out any gas. Alot, of people in my town are starting to go that route. I even read an article that in the big cities they are starting to make bike trails. Because, alot of people are going that route.

I've seen a lot of cyclists and a few casual riders, but I do live near where the parks and the bike path are.
However some of them need to be follow the rules. I live on a one lane road, so the cyclists are supposed to follow with traffic and the runners are supposed to be against traffic. Well that puts them coming straight at each other and there isn't any room to get over. Also cars aren't watching as they pull out of the driveway and the bikes aren't looking. I went to go to the store yesterday and 4 cyclists blew by the entrance of my parking lot at 30 mph and I could have hit one of them because they were on the wrong side of the road, plus their speed.
I am starting to cycle and this is the reason why I am not riding on the road. Cars don't want the bikes on the road and the cyclists that aren't following the rules are making the ones that do look bad.
bikes are considered a vehicle and you can are supposed to follow the same rules of the road, but a lot don't. So I believe motorcyles would have to follow those rules too.

We're at $4.12 today, er, this morning. Who knows what it might be this afternoon. 
Our entire family is doing a lot of walking, and my husband and I have lost a few pounds since we started doing this. My girls are also getting a lot of exercise. They took a luggage cart to the local grocery store the other day and were able to get what we needed and pull the thing home. Our rule is that any place in town we need to go, we'll do it by walking or riding a bike. I can already see a difference in how often we fill up.

Since we're out in the country, we can't really walk or ride bikes anywhere for anything we actually need to go to, but pleasure driving has definitely been replaced by walking or bike riding. I really enjoy walking better than driving anyway. You get to see more that way. The only thing that I don't like about it is dogs.

I live in town, but it's a pretty small town.
When I have to go to another town, there are several of us who carpool. I think I said that before but can't remember. Anyway, that's helped a lot.
A couple of friends and I are going to the home school convention at the end of this week. I'm kind of dreading how much it's going to cost in gas to get to Denver and back. But I haven't been in a couple of years and feel like I need to go again.

Gas prices have been staying the same or going down just a bit here. They were at $3.79 this morning.
If I were closer to town, I'd be doing more walking like this. It would definitely help my waistline.  But I'm 8 miles from the nearest grocery store... I couldn't buy perishables if I were walking. But if the gas gets worse, I could walk to the little market just up the street where the prices are outrageous... they must buy at retail then mark-up for profit. Also, we do have a produce stand within walking distance, but I usually catch that on the way home from work.

My husband and I both have locking gas caps now. My car sits at home 99% of the time and his sits in a parking lot for a couple of days at a time while he is working out of town. Neither of us wanted to take a chance that someone might take our gas and leave us stranded!

I bought gas tonight for $3.88 a gallon, at least a 10cent per gallon discount over other stations. The town where my kids are at VBS and girl scout camp has a Walmart gas station (our town's walmart doesn't have one). Gas at most places near here are from $3.98 to 4.06 but they had their at $3.91 a gallon and if you pay with a walmart gift card, they give you 3cents more per gallon off.
I may be getting a job soon. That will mean more driving but more money to pay for it too. For now, I'm looking at cutting back our activities next week. I usually drive 15 minutes to do exercise classes every morning but if gas keeps rising I will have to cut it to 3-4 days a week and if it keeps rising, I'll stop going. This week my kids have activities in our town and then more in another town, so I drive to that town, drop my boys off at VBS and take my dd to Girl Scout Fitness Camp and I hang out for 3 hours before I pick them up. Last year I would have gone home but I can't drive that far now.

I was hoping to go this year, but they suddenly moved it farther away this year for some reason. There is no way I could afford the gas to go right now. I love looking at all the new stuff that is available. I was even hoping to take our speech therapist with me, but not this year.

I do this ALL the time!
For example this coming July my eldest will be working at the zoo for two weeks. One of those weeks I will be needing to drive my girls into town to catch the bus to girl scout camp. Camp bus picks them up at 8 AM. DS doesn't start work til 10. Hubby is going to take the girls into catch their bus, then head off to job interviews or class. A little later, the boys and I will leave to get the eldest to work by 10. Youngest ds and I will be spending the ENTIRE WEEK, 4 hours a day, at either the Zoo or the nearby library or any number of places in that area. At 2 we pick up the eldest from work and head directly to the area where the girls will be returning by camp bus. They get dropped of between 4:30 and 5 PM. We'll either run errands or spend even MORE time at the library, another branch that is right across the street from the busstop. IF it looks like we have time - the boys and I MIGHT catch a matinee at a nearby cheap seats. We'll do that routine, Monday- Wednesday. Thursday night the girls are spending the night at camp so when we leave the zoo we'll come straight home. Then Friday we won't have to worry about the girls in the morning and after the zoo shift is over for my eldest we'll be headed up to the girl scout camp for the closing ceremonies and to get the girls.
Because of where we live we have to combine trips - simply because running back and forth from home into town is just not practical, financially or timewise, and MY time is worth a lot too!

Ha! This thread reminds me of the funniest political cartoon I've seen in a while.

So, how about some ideas for a mom with 3 kids who never goes anywhere without them, drives a car tht is already paid for, and already doesn't have any extra activities (especially that cost $$) and already combines trips as much as possible.

When you get an answer to that, ZoeBob ... lemme know, okay?!?!?!? Except change that # to 4 kids, and a pregnant mom!!! The only "extra" activity is the weekly homeschooling soccer league, which is one night per week (our only night out, these days!)

LOL OK.
It's not like I can get a bike or a scooter. If we were all to ride bikes, it's too far to the grocery store and that's the closest place. DS would never keep up.
Getting a new car won't help because I can't afford one. Actually, I will probably be trading my van (that is slowly falling apart but ahs almost 200,000 miles on it) for a different vehicle that someone is planning to donate to the church's mercy team. Hopefully that will get a little better milage.
When the school year starts there will be more activities like AWANA and some sports that make PE for homeschooling but I usually combine those trips with other stuff anyway.

I'd like those answers too!
Only add an unemployed hubby with NO prospects in a state where the governor is touting that he brought more jobs to the state and that unemployment is way below national averages. Hubby goes to class and comes home and that's about it. We had soccer twice a week, but that was close enough to walk to and we did. Soccer ends tomorrow.
The girls earned their way to girl scout camp this summer or they wouldn't be going. Ds #1 got a scholarship to theatre camp or he wouldn't be doing that AND his sponser for the Zoo volunteer program paid his program fee or that wouldn't be happening either.
We do go to the zoo - but that's on a pass bought LAST summer - when gas was still under $3.00 a gallon and hubby had a job.
Anyway - it's kinda hard to see much humor in it all.
