But...but..but....

Why would anyone *leave* here? Make your family move here.

That's what I'm saying!!!!! We would give anything to be back up in that area again!!!! (One day when we are done with active duty military maybe we will be back there)

lol! You don't ask much, do ya?[;)][:D]

I'll tell you one thing were looking forward to (if we do move to MO) is snow. GB and I were talking about snow this afternoon and she said "I wanna go somewhere and build a snow man.". I thought hmmmm.

ick! That would be one reason to keep me away from an area.

Is it crazy to buy a house if you've never seen it? Should we rent at first? Hmmm.

Oh, I have a question before I go.

In what order do you do your buying a new house/selling your current house? How do people make that work out? Is it a good idea to rent at the new location at first?

Like I mentioned before, hubby had to move here first because of job. We were away from each other for over 2 months and it was not easy. I had to sell our little townhouse in CA while he was staying here with his father. And yes...the question was should we rent first or should we buy? We did a lot of packing before he left and all we had left was a couch, TV, ref & bed that my son and I shared. Everything else were in the garage. Plates and stuff...son and I used paper plates and in most cases ....take out or eating at gramma's. I did not want to rent since we've been living in boxes for months and I don't want to go to another state and still living in boxes only to pack up again. So, we decided hubby would look for a house for us. We used realtor.com a lot. I told him what I wanted in a house and school was a big factor since son then had to transfer school. We did a lot of emailing pictures and sending videos of homes he looked at. I saw a house in the website and he went to check it out and he had this thing in his heart that 'it's the house' so he sent me more pics and made an offer and fortunately, I found a buyer for our townhouse. We moved here Nov 2004 and was just excited to see the house that hubby found for us for the very first time and I couldn't ask for anything more. It was 'the house' - there were a lot of tears and running around but most of all prayers to just keep us both sane in making a big change in our lives.

Our neighbors thinks it's weird that I get excited with snow and why we left sunny Southern CA for the midwest but I love the 4 seasons. I like snow...but then I'm a stay at home Mom and don't have to deal with driving in the snow in a regular basis.

zmanfan38 -> RE: Moving out of state (5/24/2008 10:03:59 PM)

Jodavi, that's me too. I'm a SAHM and my 3 year old has only seen a couple of dustings of snow...not enough to play in. I like 4 seasons too, and one reason is because a real winter means less bugs in the warmer seasons. We have to wear suits of armor just to play outside here...it's kind of annoying.

Thanks for the tips everybody! I'm reading and taking notes and very much appreciate every single post that's been made. Keep 'em coming![:)]

We have four seasons here, they are just well disguised! [;)]

LOL, Denim! What are they disguised as?[:D] Are you in a part of CA that's almost always warm?

Roberta_ -> RE: Moving out of state (5/24/2008 10:37:11 PM)

Today was rather cool! However, earlier in the month we had several days of over 100.

I live not too far from San Francisco.

I see your from No. CA and it's real nice in Northern CA.
I don't know...I was raised and grew up in an island and lived in a sunny weather all my life that having 4 seasons became a real treat for me.

Gotcha. We went to San Fran in 1997 and loved it. We hope to go back one of these days.

But.... it's me and my two youngest, 2 hamsters, 2 mice, and 2 dogs (can you believe we are downsized in the pet department?? [8D]).... my fiance is going to move us down with his truck and trailer... but I have to do all the packing, cleaning, selling my trailer, finding a new place to live, get a job....

We are selling all we can... just taking down dishes clothes and beds... oh yeah.... and cherished stuff...

I'm moving from Indiana to Texas...

Incredible....

zmanfan38 -> RE: Moving out of state (5/28/2008 10:00:29 PM)

You've got me beat by almost 400 miles. UGH!

Hey, feel free to ask any specific questions in here. You won't spam me at all, in fact, you would probably think of something I would not think of that would benefit both of us.

Can I ask how old your children are? Mine is 3 and I'm shopping for a new car seat with this trip in mind. Might not have got the $250 one, but if she's gonna sit in it for 700something miles...

My moves were pretty much fiascos, so I'll not give you any help... except for this...

If you can get there for a 'recognizance' visit, I'd highly recommend it- for a few reasons
1-If you are a visual mapper, it'll be easier for you to 'remember' what you have already seen the first few times out- and it gives you a nice 'almost there' feeling too
2- It gives you an idea of what's available to move into- and if you can actually find a place, copenhagen furniture has a site that has a house arranging tool- you can decide whether the sofa you have will fit your new living room (and front door!!!) before you ship it, then just to have to get rid of it

Also, starting a subscription to a local paper, or even just following the weather and news, helps you begin to adjust before you get there (maybe you and your daughter could start a weather chart or something for 'there' before you go)

Temporary is your friend- you do NOT have to have it ALL unpacked the first day!!! Paper plates, sleeping bags, and laundromats ARE survivable, at least for the first few days!!

Christi, my girls are 11 & 12...... Driving down will be fun.... because they can switch between my car and my fiance's 'cool' truck... lol!

I promised the girls we would book hotel rooms for one night on the way down... as a mini-vacation.... it will be interesting with the animals. [&:]

I'm thankful they are older now.... they make some really wonderful conversation! [:D]

Make sure to book rooms at hotels that have a swimming pool. The girls will like that and it feels good after a long day of travel.

zmanfan38 -> RE: Moving out of state (5/29/2008 11:09:24 PM)

KuKu, I'm all for the paper plates and temporary stuff. Moving is hard enough without having to wash dishes with the soap you know you packed somewhere.[;)]

Rachel, 11 and 12 sound like fun ages. I did buy that new car seat today. It looks pretty comfy.

We're going to stay in a hotel half way there also, and we haven't ruled out taking 3 days to get there...we'll see.

And Ruth, fabulous idea about getting a swimming pool. That sounds super relaxing for everybody![sm=thumbsup.gif]

......... I have news.

I'm moving in less than 2 weeks!

I've started packing BIG TIME!!! ... and many of these tips are in my mind as I pack.......

So much to do.... such little time....

Anyone care to come and help??? [sm=silly.gif]

[:D]

Yay for the comfy car seat, Christi!!!!

Tips for traveling with kids:

A bag of new/different toys is a good idea.... but don't get them all out at once.... introduce a new toy every so often..... it will make entertainment easier!

......... and planning ahead for munchy healthy snacks....... little ziploc bags she can hold on her own.... will make her feel like a big girl!!!

...... kid music.... for singing.....

...... books on cd.

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Moving out of state (5/30/2008 10:35:55 AM)

for traveling with kids...my mom would make us "travel bags". She made them when we were little, and then would put them up when we weren't moving or traveling on the road on a long trip (like to go visit family every year)....so they weren't every day things. Anyway she made it like a flip open folder thing with a few sections in it, and she would fill each section with all sorts of different things. (I am not sure if I can explain it well....but if not I can take a picture of it later if you want me to). Some things she would put in there for us were things like....
coloring stuff
colorforms (do they still make those?...those were always cool!!!)
chalk board
paper and pencil
map of our journey
gum (for chewing to keep ears from popping)
small snack packages (and she would keep larger snacks available in the car, but the small ones were ours only)
It had all sorts of pockets and she would fill them up with all sorts of gadgets and toys and fun things!!!! She wouldn't hand the bags out til we were in the car on our way...and if it was a two way trip (there and back) she would refill things before the next leg of the trip started.

Ephesians4_32 -> RE: Moving out of state (5/30/2008 12:39:06 PM)

I've moved several times. I forgot the toys I had stored in the attic. My husband was cleaning the utility room and set stuff in the backyard. He forgot to bring it back in and pack it! I was so tired from packing that I didn't go look in the back yard.

The military paid professionals to move the majority of our belongings. Ones that I treasured most, we put in a U-Haul trailer at the back of our van. However, the U-Haul leaked and rain soaked the rug under our mirrored halltree and caused the varnish on that side to turn gray.

Do not pack mirrors flat; they'll break. You've probably seen trucks transporting panes of glass. Glass should never be transported horizontally. The glass plates and sheets should always be put in vertical position. This is why our halltree, which was taller than the trailer allowed, had to be on its side. We were too tired to unload the trailer when we reached our destination and didn't know about the leak until we unpacked.

Label every box with contents and the room it will go in if you are doing your own packing! Especially be sure you've labeled your bedding so you don't have to sleep on mattresses without sheets when your furniture arrives.

jodavi -> RE: Moving out of state (5/30/2008 6:12:48 PM)

One of the guys who helped us when we were loading our ABF trailer had the TV in between matresses. Actually, you might want to leave a bunch of stuff toys or pillows out. Because of the long drive with your stuff...the things in the truck will be shifted and that's where some stuff breaks. Our friend recommended not to leave any spaces in between so we had my son's stuff toys and some old pillows and even used some thick blankets just to fill the gaps to avoid shifting. It helped a lot.

FunBetty -> RE: Moving out of state (6/14/2008 7:20:46 PM)

I'm of military brattage and have lived in four different states.... I have a few tips!

- Clothes. Call this crazy but when I move (I self-move nowadays w/ uhaul!), I pack my clothes by putting them in garbage bags. Really they're going to get wrinkled anyway, but it's nice because it's a space saver, as you can throw the bags in to fill in any nooks and crannies.

- If you do it yourself (truck), pack the heaviest items towards the front of the truck. Get a bigger truck than you think you'll need. If you get a truck and can tow your car, you can also pack your car with stuff.

- Buying/selling house. With the market you might think of putting your house on the market early, as you never know how long it will take to sell. When my dad retired from military oodles of years ago, he put the house up for sale about 6 months in advance not knowing how long it would take to sell. Some neighbors had theirs up for months without offers. Our house sold in 9 days (it had a pool), so we had to rent until retirement!!!

One thing he did though was come to the area before we moved out there to find a house. He said he looked at 100 (!) houses before he made the decision on the one we got. Schools were the biggest factor. I'm sure the pool was too [8D]

You might consider making trips out there for job searching, and once you get a job - searching for housing. It's so much nicer when everything is set up before the move. Fortunately with a 3 yr old you don't have to worry about school. I had issues when I transferred because the new schools kept making me start over in math (average level) despite the fact that I was up to a year ahead in advanced classes.
