I'm moved.


The most helpful hint I found was to pack stuff using sheets and towels as cushioning.... we wrote stuff on boxes in the beginning... but we had to pack so fast that we dumped that idea very quickly....


The entire time we were packing... I couldn't help but think of Sharon-Marie and her list... lol!

We are slowly unpacking.... it was truly an exhausting week!

hey i just found this thread and wanted to add...BE CAREFUL with U-Haul.

We rented a truck for a move that was literally 25 blocks away. The $19.95 they were going to charge me for the 1 day rental quickly turned into $100.00 after all the fees and such.

so, just read all the fine print. we decided after that experience with Uhaul that it is worth the extra money just to have someone else do it for you...so we remembered that for our 2nd move...more expensive, but hassle free, and they charged us exactly what they told us they were going to charge us.

Do you happen to remember what some of the hidden fees were? I'd like some ammunition when we talk to them...let them know we've got our eyes on them.

Did you happen to use AFB UPack for your next move? We priced them, and they are the cheapest movers we found (thanks to a poster early in this thread), but it's still far more expensive (I think) than the U-Haul. Of course if there are hidden fees, then who knows.

Having done uhaul before....they charge (outrageously) for mileage (in town), they charge if you use their dolly, and they charge if you use furniture pads....

Hmmm, I'm wondering if a moving company would be cheaper after all.

Thanks for those examples. Maybe I'll call them and press them for all hidden fees and see what kind of quote they give me and then press them some more.

We're very fortunate there. My hubby's former job (he worked there 11 years) is collecting boxes from the warehouse for us. They are very sturdy, heavy cardboard. That's gonna help us out a ton!

We're able to get boxes from both our works and if you have a Cosco or maybe even Sam's Club card...you can always get boxes from the store.

I don't remember how much I paid, but I got two of their wardrobe boxes and UPSed clothing and other items from Indiana to CA last November.

One of the things I found when working at UPS is that a lot of people who were moving sent a bunch of their stuff UPS and only used a truck for the items UPS wouldn't take.

U-Haul doesn't have "hidden fees" bu they do divide their services up so that what you see as their "fee" is just simply that, nothing else added into that. Anything extra added in will of course add more costs to the final price for you. It's not like they are trying to make you pay more, they are just in business to make money and they do that by dividing up their services. You don't have to choose to use their boxes or their dolly....you can get them yourself or just not use a dolly. If you choose to use theirs though then it would make sense that they would charge you for that. As far as insurance, check with your insurance company and find out what your insurance covers as far as other vehicles goes...you may find that you are covered already under that and theirs isn't necessary. If you aren't though, then I would suggest getting their insurance...the minute you don't have it you will regret that decision.

Make sure the mover know how many trucks to bring. Every time we've moved, they ask how many bedrooms. I say 3 and my office (since I work out of home). Every single time, they say yeah, yeah... we can get it all in one truck. They always under estimated how much stuff we have to move, my business stuff alone fills half a moving truck.

i don't remember what all the fees were with u-haul. i know we didn't use any of their stuff, ie dollys, boxes, or anything, plus we refueled the truck when we were finished with it.

i just remember that i was happy to return their jalopy to them and i didn't care that it was $80.00 more than we thought it was going to be.

i'll certainly never use them again.

I'm going to join in this thread...looks like it's the season to move.

My husband and I are moving from Texas to New York sometime between August and October. I know that's vague, but it really comes down to when we get jobs. He has an interview on Tuesday (everyone pray), but even if he gets called back for a second interview and gets hired, he won't start until September. Now that you know all that...

We've (I've) been going through all the boxes in storage, cleaning out closets, etc. We've sold some stuff and given a lot away. I've moved many times, but it has been YEARS since I've moved from one town to another, much less to another state. When I got married there was no shortage of websites and checklists for getting things done ahead of time. I can't seem to find one for moving, though, which doesn't make sense because people move a lot more than they get married! Anyway, does anyone know of one? I'm specifically looking for a list of things that are going to have to be turned off here and shopped for/turned on there. (I forget those things even in town.) Help?

We've been giving this a lot of thought. Looks like the ABF movers are the cheapest, but it's still almost $1500. I looked into U-Haul and that looks more our speed. We're thinking of getting a 24 or 26 foot truck and one of those car trailer thingys. Hubby is a truck driver, so he'll drive the U-Haul with our small Ford car on the trailer behind. GB and I will drive in my SUV. It's around $380 for four days use of the truck...that's much better.

Have you factored in fuel and other transportation costs? For an 1100 mile trip, you're probably looking at $400-500 just in fuel, plus however much for tolls - tolls on a truck will be more than they'd be for a car.

That's good - I was going to make the same point. Boxes are EXPENSIVE! It's not just UHaul, either - everybody charges lots of money for them. One of those big wardrobe boxes with the metal hanger bar can cost upwards of $15.

It's a great ministry with tips and support for families moving. My church offered a class when I needed to meet new friends in a new church in a new city. I got to meet a bunch of ladies that just moved in from other cities and states. There are churches around the nation that offers this ministry and I was fortunate that my church is one of them. It's amazing how the little things like finding the nearest post office can be an ordeal when you first move to a new city or a new state but then it's a great comfort that there are others who goes through the same things everyday and that everything will be okay. I recommend the book After the boxes are unpacked offered by the same ministry. The book is humurous and gave me a lighter easier way on looking towards my new journey and provided biblical verses that were imprinted on me during that stage of my life.

Another thing to consider when you move:

Consider the hassles of moving something compared to the cost of replacing it after the move--also consider where you will be living after the move; don't take a lot of furniture unless you are sure that what you take will fit in the new home.

I expect to move sometime in the next few years. I am already planning for that move. I store things in plastic file boxes--fairly sturdy, stackable, and all the same size. I will take the beds (maybe), antique furniture, and (maybe) some of the specially designed furniture, but the rest will be left behind--donated or sold. I will probably do the move myself, but that's because I have to move a tractor, 4 horses and associated equipment, assorted pets as well as personal equipment.

Dan, thanks for dropping by!

You know, I did calculate the probable gas bill (looked at the fuel mileage for the truck we're going to get and assumed $3.90/gallon), but I never thought about tolls. I need to ask my Dad how many are between here and there since he's made the trip many times. Thank you!

Yeah, we're super blessed to have those boxes being saved for us.

Well, it helps that we got married just a year ago and haven't had time to accumulate too much extra stuff. We were both 36 when we married and there were two complete households to merge, so we were already in the habit of giving things away. [:D]

I don't know if this will help anyone, but since we weren't sure of an exact moving date, we started with the bedroom and cleared it of everything we knew we wouldn't want to move. After that, we moved onto the kitchen. Then the living room, etc. We only have a couple of rooms left and we can just pack up.
