...what I miss about hockey from 1979? No advertisments on the boards, nor on the ice surface. Organ music, not annoying piped-in sound effects and rock music like today. Fewer teams, thus a better caliber of play (though in '79, the WHA was still around in it's last year)....there were at least a FEW less professional teams, but only 17 in the NHL that year (1978-79). It would have been 18 teams but the Cleveland Barons (formerly the Seals) merged with the Minnesota North Stars prior to the start of the season. But that's another story. Maybe we should just start an "all things hockey' thread. Go Pens!! Rambling Blind Lemon

ORIGINAL: BlindLemon5103 Lastly, I found a 10:00 minute clip of a Leafs-Canadiens game from 1979 that features a clip of Doucet singing the anthem (only about half the song, but you get the picture). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTJw2lYgXOA Check it out! It will bring back some memories. OK, I'm through with the shameless promotion of the Habs for now. Go Pens go! Blessings to all! Great clip! Guy LaFleur, Ken Dryden, Larry Robinson, Scotty Bowman behind the bench. Man, what a great group! Loved those TV graphics back then! BTW, I wonder who Scotty's rooting for since he's coached both teams!

Rambling Blind Lemon You truly can blame one person for the rapid escalation in player salaries that resulted in the selling of advertising space on everything: Eric Lindros. He was the first rookie to DEMAND over one mil a season and he refused to play for the Nordiques, the team he was drafted by. Of course, he used that same tactic in the minors with the Greyhounds. He was a jerk on and off the ice and his hype about being the next Gretzky never materialized. I was happy he never won a ring! BTW, This rant was brought to you by the rambling racoon who endorses .....

I never cared for Lindros either. Actually, it worked out good for the Nordiques...by trading him to the Flyers, they wound up with Peter Forsberg. Well, good for the Colorado Avalanche fans anyway! Too bad the Nordiques moved out. They had a passionate, even violent rivalry with the Habs (there I go again). Cool uniforms too. Scotty Bowman? I would suppose he's rooting for the Wings, but then again, he could be glad to see both teams there. Guy Lafleur was awesome. The Canadiens of the late '70s...awesome. Now the Islanders of the early '80s were mighty good, and so were the Oilers, but I'll take those Canadiens teams over all of them. I would like a Black Hawks Cup win one of these decades as well. At least they seem to be on their way up! Wait 'til next year!

Hope the Pens win on Saturday to force at least one more game at he Igloo. Also, it would be neat to see the NHL at least be close to the NBA in the ratings of their games.

ORIGINAL: rynthetyn Decided to come back after a self-imposed exile of a few months... Anyway, good job tonight by the Pens, I was wondering if they'd manage to score a single goal, period. Wondered where you went.....welcome back! Any major changes for the Bolts? Thanks for the welcome back :) Supposedly the sale of the Lightning is going to be going through sometime soon, but Palace Sports had to pretty much self-finance the sale to save face after the ownership groups financing fell through. About the only thing that's not up in the air right now is that they aren't going to be trading away the number 1 pick, they've been marketing Stamkos all over the place. So I guess something good came out of stinking up the joint this year. Though, proving my theory that it's impossible for all of our Tampa Bay teams to be good at the same time, the year the Lightning embarrass themselves, the Rays suddenly go from worst to the best team in baseball. I guess having all 3 teams good at once is too much to wish for.

It might take decades (a century?) to match the amount of cup wins they have. I have always liked the Blackhawks! They have cool uniforms too! I hope they can do well next season.

During the '80s, I was a huge Blackhawks fan. I attended about six games per year, and listened to most of their games via radio since we didn't have cable until the end of the decade. I distinctly recall listening to Pat Foley describe the action as I sat in my bedroom working on term papers for school (UIC, to be exact). I also remember listening to Hawks games on the radio at the pizza parlor where I worked...funny thing, we were all Hawks fans, but we all had secondary rooting interests....one guy liked the Bruins, another liked the Flames, I myself liked Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver, New Jersey(and the purple and gold Kings!), ....when these teams weren't playing the Hawks, that is. Now this is supposed to be a thread about the battle for the Cup, and I've turned it into "all things hockey" or "hockey memories"...oh well, to avoid criticism I will say again ....go Pens! My fond hope is that the series will be tied after tonight. Blessings, grace and peace to all! P.S. Do you remember the old Vancouver uniforms of the late '70s- early '80s, the big orange and yellow "V"? I was the only one who liked that look!

ORIGINAL: colliefan temporary break from Cup talk Aparently Torts is toast in Tampa. Replacement is Barry Melrose. Ryn, what do you think about the move? Well, what I really think I can't post, TOS violations and all that . The edited for public consumption version is that I think it's a giant bunch of bull publicity stunt that's an insult to the Tampa Bay hockey market. The word is that the reason for such a hire is to "sell hockey to the Tampa Bay area", because apparently Phil Esposito must be chopped liver and his hard work in selling hockey a decade and a half ago doesn't count. Because some washed up talking head working for a sports network in a state that cared so little about their team that they lost it to North Carolina and who's claim to fame is being lucky enough to be coaching the Kings when they traded for Gretzky and who couldn't even win the Cup with Gretzky, and who pretty much everyone in the Tampa Bay area hates because of the way he trashed us as fans during our Cup run is somehow supposed to "sell hockey to the Tampa Bay area". If he wants to show Tortarella the door, that's one thing, I don't agree with it, but I understand that it's his team and he wants a new regime, but hiring Barry Melrose is a publicity stunt hire, and a team that's won the Stanley Cup deserves more than publicity stunts, they deserve a real coach. Oh yeah, and $50 says that another publicity stunt that Mr. Hollywood Producer dude is going to pull is that classic Hollywood promotional stunt, the Showmance. He's going to find some D-list celebrity chick who wants to boost her profile, and he'll try to convince some single Lightning player to fake-date said D-list chick so that said player and the team show up in People magazine paparazzi shots. I'm sure Jessica Simpson will have gotten dumped by Tony Romo and would be available, Paris Hilton and her dude of the moment won't last, and well, Elisha Cuthbert doesn't seem to have met a hockey player she didn't like, and if all else fails, Brooke Hogan is already in love with Vinny Lecavalier, it wouldn't take much convincing for her to try and hook up with a player. So yeah, I'm not happy, this is already off to an inauspicious start. The fact that Koules even thinks he needs to sell hockey to us is starting off by insulting the fan base.

That where his place is. Mr. Hair Gel. He wasn't the best coach but then having Gretzky on your team is like having a second general manager. Gretzky micromanaged all the trades and was jealous of Luc Robitaille who was as poular (if not more) on the Kings. Remember that in the year of LA's cup run Gretzky was out for the first half of the season after the crack tackle he suffered from his two Edmonton buddies. Robitaille stepped in as captain and fired up the team for the best start in Kings history. The sparks started flying upon Gretzky's return and Luc was traded the next season to the Penguins. It's also intersting that Luc was also traded back to the Kings the season after they both found themselves on the NY Rangers. Gretzky was one of the greatest hockey players in terms of skill but at times I found him to be arrogant and a divisive force on the team. If you got on his bad side you'd end up in a trade. BTW, he's one of the worst coaches and general managers in the league. Poor Pheonix!

Back to the Cup talk ... we're heading into double overtime in game 5, and I'm pretty much on the edge of my seat ... I love the Wings (always have), and my 2nd fav has always been Pittsburgh. However, I married into a family of diehard Maple Leafs (Make Me Laughs) fans ... so if the Wings don't win the cup, I'm in for a VERY long summer of teasing ....

NOOOOO!!!! They lost game 5 due to a dumb error ... high sticking left them a man down and the Penguins seized that golden opportunity to end it 4-3 ... so now it's off to Game 6 on Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

Wow! What a game that was. I was glued to it. I thought it was funny that they started unpacking the trophey in the back near the end of regulation play. Jokes on them.

There is nothing like seeing your team win the Cup in a game 7 at your barn. Still have memories of that night back in June of 06 when the Canes claimed the Cup. I would love for the series to go to a game 7.

ORIGINAL: BlindLemon5103 I stayed up and watched the whole thing! Couldn't walk away from it! Despite the win, I am troubled by the fact that they were outshot nearly 2-1, and it seemed Osgood had time for a nap back there. It's been that way the whole series. Not enough penetration by the Pens...not nearly enough shots on goal. Whether or not the Wings are getting away with obstruction all the time, they have an awesome defense. Seems like when a Penguin skates over the line, there are three-four Red Wings covering him. And yet...a win is a win! What an inspiring victory! I left them for dead after they fell behind 3-2. I hope they come out strong in the Igloo. I have this fear that we might see a repeat of Game 6 in Dallas, where the home team just didn't have it. I get the feeling we are just staving off the inevitable a little longer. No matter what the results, we get to see more hockey! I just wish the Pens had taken Game 4 at home! My thoughts exactly. The Pens are giving the wings too much room to skate. They need to get in their face more. They were doing that more in the 2nd overtime but they need to keep it up all game long. Osgood is now probably wishing that he faced more shots so as to stay sharper although on the winning goal he truly had no chance of stopping that one! Go Pens!

10 minutes to game time! Get out the chips, popcorn and soda (or carrot sticks and mineral water if your eating healthy) it time to face-off and drop the puck! Go pens! May the puck loom large for the boys in black and gold! Shutout for Fluery!

Wings are winning 1-0 and the Pens couldn't score with a 5 on 3 advantage. Wake up boys! Be more agressive. Think toro and they are wearing red!
