colliefan -> Battle for The Cup (5/19/2008 10:54:05 PM)

The battle for hockey's holy grail is set. The Detriot Red Wings will battle the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Stanley Cup: the oldest awarded trophy in sports. Each player. coach, and manager gets his name engraved on one of the rings. As one ring fills, the oldest is removed and sent to the hockey hall of fame. Everyone on the team gets to have his day with the cup. The things the trophy has been through is stuff of legend.

Puck drop for game one is Saturday in Detriot at 8PM. Hope for a good, long series as it is a long time until October and the start of hockey season.

A bittersweet time indeed! Excitement for the finals and seeing the Cup go to the best team and bitter because of the knowledge that their are only 4-7 more games left until late september's exhibition games. [sm=crystreams.gif]

Thanks in advance NHL for another exciting season!![sm=icon_smile_cold.gif]

I still have the AHL Wolves to watch as well....they are up 2-0 vs. Toronto in their series (conference finals)....

...but yes, hockey will be ending soon.

Oh well, I'll go back to my White Sox and wait eagerly for NFL camps to open. Looking forward to the Colts -despite being a lifelong Chicago resident, I've never been a Bears fan, been following the Colts since the Jeff George era (1992).

I'll have to check out the NFL threads as well.

In the meantime, go Penguins!

I am leaning toward them too, my friend!

Actually the series is 3-1. Toronto won last night. I can't wait for the Finals to start. As a hardcore hockey fan though it is almost to long of a wait for the finals to start.

Yankee Nut -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/24/2008 12:43:25 PM)

YAHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Finals are Starting Tonight. I have to work tonight so I will miss most of the game but will watch the highlights when I get home.

colliefan -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/24/2008 2:44:51 PM)

Yep. Don't know why Bettman didn't move the game to last night to avoid going head-to-head with the NBA. Will be intersting to see who wins the ratings battle.

Just one word: Versus. I can get Center Ice cheaper then I can upgrade my satellite to get Versus. Though I don't know if Center Ice shows the finals anyway. If Bettman wants ratings he should go to a network people actually get. : /

MissGizmo -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/24/2008 11:07:47 PM)

Detroit just won the first game 4 - 0 over Pittsburg. [:D]

mapachito13 -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/27/2008 8:14:53 AM)

The Pens are in trouble. They have to score to win it. The Wings seem to have the Pens offense figured out blanking them in two straight!! And scoring three goals minimum a game they seem to have their defense figured out too!

Hopefully the Pens will win a couple on home ice to keep the Finals from being a sweep for the Wings!

BlindLemon5103 -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/27/2008 9:44:09 AM)

A good friend of mine (no lover of the Wings, so he might be biased!) made a comment that "the Wings trapped their way to the Finals"...was that the defensive style the the NJ Devils used during their championship runs?

I'm not exactly sure what he means by playing the "trap", but I thought there were rule changes that pretty much killed off that style of play.

Those more enlightened hockey fans out there, please fill me in!

1) What exactly is the "trap"? and

2) Are the Wings using this style?

...regarding rule changes, I hear they want to evaluate the size specifications of goalies equipment in the off-season. Didn't they do this already? I mean, do they want every game to be 9-8?

I always thought that to increase scoring, you need more skill players. I sometimes think the league needs to cut back to 24 teams (or even less, if possible) then you would see more depth on rosters and more skill players per team....but that 's for another thread!!

All that said, I am disappointed in the Penguins so far.

My prediction? Wings in 5 [:(]

Instead of going through and trying to explain the trap I actually found it on Wikipedia.
Trap Defense Defined

I was hoping the Pens could win it but it looks like they are outmatched. I don't like a one-sided final.

colliefan -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/27/2008 4:55:28 PM)

Looks as if the Pens' goose is cooked.

BlindLemon5103 -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/27/2008 10:33:34 PM)

Thank you for that much needed info regarding the trap.

The Wings aren't getting called for obstruction all the time, though. I have to admit, they are one talented and smart hockey team.

I lament a one-sided final as well. Oh well, I can always look at the NBA playoffs. Looks like it could be a Lakers-Celtics final just like "back in the day".

..and there's always the Calder Cup finals!

Blessings and good night! Here's to an unlikely Penguins comeback!!

Let's see how they do tonight before we pronounce final sentence (or is that the Finals sentence?). Home ice advantage in the next two might be the lift they need. Maybe they can win two in the Igloo!!

BlindLemon5103 -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/28/2008 10:52:27 AM)

Will the real Penguins please stand up?

Tonight is the night the Penguins win, but I still think it will be Wings in five.

colliefan -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/28/2008 3:58:49 PM)

If the Pens don't win tonight, I well could be sweep city. I still carry animosity from the '02 Cup with the Detriot Free-press calling the Canes "Redneck hockey."

Yes, we were overmatched. But we won game one, and if we could of won the three OT game 3, it could have been a closer series.

colliefan -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/28/2008 11:09:58 PM)

Good and much needed win tonight for the Pens.

rynthetyn -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/29/2008 1:18:16 AM)

Decided to come back after a self-imposed exile of a few months...

Anyway, good job tonight by the Pens, I was wondering if they'd manage to score a single goal, period.

BlindLemon5103 -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/29/2008 7:49:20 AM)

My friend was complaining about the Red Wings and the trap once again before tonight's game. I asked him how is it that they are pulling that off if there are rules against it? He said that the refs had their whistles in their pockets for the first two games. He saw all kinds of obstruction going on.

Well, I thought he was just frustrated that the Pens lost, but early in last night's game, the announcer mentioned that the coach of the Pens had a meeting with the refs regarding, you guessed it, obstruction and the fact that it wasn't being called!

My friend knows his hockey.

Anyway, glad to see the Pens break through. Hope they come all the way back and win this thing.

I can commiserate. I felt the same in '93 when the Kings lost games 2,3 and 4 in OT against the Habs (my favorite team to dislike). That Marty McSorley stick incident really took the life out of the team and Kelly Hrudey (try as he might) isn't Patrick Roy!

Back in the present:
I hope the Pens can pull off another win tomorrow night then we'll have a three game series! I hope your prognostications are wrong Lemon my friend!

Wondered where you went.....welcome back!
Any major changes for the Bolts?

Me too!

the Habs (my favorite team to dislike).

Actually, I've always been fond of "Les Habitants". I was a big fan of Guy Lafleur (perhaps the last helmetless superstar) and am fascinated by their rich history. Those '70s teams were awesome, and they handled themselves with class.

I even liked their anthem singer, Roger Doucet, a white haired guy who used to do one of the most stirring renditions of "O Canada" I've ever heard. In French. The old Forum was a cool place.

I like most of the "Original Six" too (not too crazy about Detroit though, from a rivalry standpoint).

I did want the Kings to win back in '93 though, because they had never won it. Since then, neither of these teams have returned to the finals.

Anyway, since the Canadiens no longer dominate the league, there's nothing really to hate about them (I never hated them to begin with, but many do!)....I was hoping they would go farther in the playoffs this year than they did.

Oh well, let's go Pens! If anything, extending the series means we get to see more hockey! The Calder Cup finals start tonight in Rosemont, Illinois...home of the Chicago Wolves. I think I'll tune in tonight!

Blessings,

Habs Apologist Lemon

BlindLemon5103 -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/29/2008 1:18:16 PM)

Correction: Doucet sang a stirring bilingual rendition of "O Canada"...

...Mr. Doucet passed away in 1981 (age 62, from a brain tumor), but I remember him quite vividly.

Habs Apologist Lemon (we'll have to agree to disagree on this one![:)])

BlindLemon5103 -> RE: Battle for The Cup (5/29/2008 1:27:10 PM)

Lastly, I found a 10:00 minute clip of a Leafs-Canadiens game from 1979 that features a clip of Doucet singing the anthem (only about half the song, but you get the picture).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTJw2lYgXOA

Check it out! It will bring back some memories.

OK, I'm through with the shameless promotion of the Habs for now. Go Pens go!

Blessings to all!
