Do you guys remember a story from a couple of years ago about the deputy (I think) who shot himself in front of a class of school kids? He was talking about gun safety as well. [:D]

(Edited to add that I think he shot his foot or something. He wasn't seriously injured.)

This story is much more tragic. A four-year-old girl shot herself after taking a pistol from her grandmother's purse while on a shopping trip to a Sam's Cub in SC. The grandmother had a permit to carry a concealed weapon. LINK

That is very tragic. Off body carry is risky, as it is harder to maintain control of your pistol. A holster on your body is much safer.

True that, Steve. Unfortunately, not all of us (specifically, grandmothers) are well suited to be wearing a paddle holster every time we leave the house. Myself, I wouldn't mind a law requiring concealed weapons be carried on your person... but I think it would only change the behaviors of such a small cross-section of those that carry concealed weapons at all that it would merely be a waste of tax dollars.

Apparently, the grandmother is a magistrate and was not required to go through concealed weapon carry training, but got the permit automatically because of her position. I am hoping this will spur some changes in the law requiring all to have the training if they are going to carry a concealed weapon. Fortunately it looks like the girl is going to be OK.

Zjah! I would think so. I pity her in her plight, but grandma really should have known better than to leave a loaded pistol within arm's reach of a four year old.
Unfortunately, this traumatic event just further demonstrates why there are laws to protect citizens from themselves.

Tragic. No doubt, but not the govnm'ts job to protect us from ourselves. Nanny state politics only leads to complete control of every aspect of our lives. And this is a tragic case again, but only one. A mere freak accident to an unknowing 4 year old by a grandmother who should have know better. A terrible lesson to have to learn.

I don't see the need for legislation and there are some companies that are starting to market holsters for women. I have read a few magazine articles on the subject, but I will admit that I don't know what works best for women. When asked, I usually have to refer them to other women that have found what works.

I agree.
The grandmother was stupid.
Sorry, but she was.
In the article, it stated she left her purse in the cart with the child.
She left her purse, with a loaded firearm in the cart with her granddaughter!!

She learned the lesson the hard way.
You don't leave a gun laying around in your purse near a 4 year old child.

If his finger was on the trigger while holstering, he hasn't learned lesson one. However,
the gun pictured on the linked page was a Beretta 92 while the story was about a Glock.

Glocks are very safe, but here's something that isn't...LE officers may have to load and unload the same rounds over and over, including chambering a round. This can eventually damage the cartridges. If an officer is having to account for all of his rounds and doesn't use the carry ammo at the range then he could have a damaged cartridge in the chamber. Carry ammo is more expensive than range ammo and some departments require accounting for each round if they issue it.

While the story may appear funny at first, it may not be as bad as it first appears--a big however though, NO instruction should be done with a loaded weapon. Only in actual practice firing at the range should the rounds have been in there.
