Miss Potter - I really enjoyed this one. I didn't know much about her so I found it interesting - assuming it's accurate that is.

We saw 'The Bucket List' and really enjoyed it.

We saw 'The Brave One' and were not happy with the foul language and sexual images, graphic violence, etc.

Saw Jumper. It's a pretty average movie, and as horrible as it is to say, I was a wee bit disappointed that Samuel L. Jackson didn't deliver his trademark line. Hayden Christensen can't act, and yet again we have the brooding guy with mommy issues and immense powers, only difference from Star Wars is who's the good guy and who's the bad.

That one?

Ok, so I watched the first disc of Spike Lee's When the Levees Broke, and it's utterly riveting. I have no idea what all else he's going to cover on the remaining discs. I have a lot of thoughts on the topic, but I'll spare y'all - except to say you should all see it.

I also watched...Jesus Camp. I didn't want to see it, when it came out. Just the descriptions and quotes I read turned my stomach.

I'm glad I watched it, though, because I got to explain where the movie goes wrong. As it turns out, it's mostly about Pentecostal Holiness, which may be evangelical, but NOT all evangelicals are PH. Another example is just pointing out all the scriptural inaccuracies and doctrinational errors. The average person watching it wouldn't know such things, so I was glad to be able to have a voice of reason against the "horrors" on the screen (even if it was something silly, like her calling Harry Potter a warlock, which he isn't, and witches don't like warlock, a warlock is a witch who has been excommunicated).

I think it's borderline criminal, how they treat those kids.

The audience groaned, snorted in disbelief. "Who believes this frightening nonsense?"

"Mind control."

"Twisted."

"Sick."

Rachael praying over her bowling ball, and the camp staff praying over a Power Point presentation.

One part that elicited laughter was Ted Haggard. Saying, "That's fabulous!" Twice. (You know, cuz he's gay and all -oh, no wait, he's not ).

I would have been interested to watch it again with the commentary - my main complaint (aside from disagreeing, inherently, with the Penetcostal Holiness theology) is how the creators lumped all evangelicals in with those nutcas - I mean, people.

I think the line he started in Pulp Fiction not the horrible Snakes On A Plane.

just watched Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning. after the ****py remake movie with the corny jessica simpson. was good to see it go back to way Dukes really was. could do without the nudity but was funny.

showed how Dukes became the Dukes

Why did I get married? - the beginning was a bit slow but like any other Tyler Perry movies, it's that second chance and forgiveness that always appeal to me. It's great to see Tyler Perry in the entire movie not playing multiple roles. It's a great movie for married people or soon to be married.

Apocalypto
Pan's Labyrinth
Bridge to Tarabithia
The Last Mimzy

I saw only about half of Apocalypto. I'll probably watch the rest later.
I've been on a fantasy kick lately. I had been wanting to see Pan's Labyrinth since it came out. ...don't know, very imaginative, good story and acting, good visuals but I was expecting more somehow. Some of the violence is pretty graphic.

I forgot I watched Marie Antoinette this weekend. On paper, there is not one thing I shouldn't like about this movie.

- historical/costume drama
- stylization
- Sofia Coppola
- New Order and the Cure

But the movie is just flat-out boring, and so mind-bogglingly amateurish. The shots and frames WASTED the amazing Versailles location, and jaw-dropping wardrobe. The script was insipid. Jason Schwartzman was only good in Rushmore, and then it wasn't much acting on his part. Kirsten Dunst simply has no presence. She looked like what it was, a kid playing dress up and walking around.

Times Square - awesome movie about punk rock girls running wild in Times Square, in 1980 (to the sdtk provided by a very, very young Tim Curry)

And more Garth Marenghi's Dark Palace, because it's utterly hysterical.

What a NICE change, last night, I watched two great movies I have no real complaints about.

Hard Pill - what if there was a pill that could make a gay man straight? It's much more about relationships, though, than sexual identity. I expected it to be pretty awful (low-budget, no name and all) but it was excellent. Much better script than half the movies I've seen recently. Well-acted - stars a guy I loved on Andy Richter Controls the Universe, the chick who played Jan Brady, and the dead store own from Jericho, among others.

The outtakes ("blooper reel") were actually really funny. Good sdtk., too.

The I watched You Stupid Man, another excellently cast, well-written movie about relationships. David Krumholtz is superb, and Milla Jojovavich is super underrated as an actress. They had great chemistry, which really made it work - and another great script.

DH and I saw a DVD of "Pulse" last night. Lame lame lame. Now I see why it was in the bargain bin It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. And I think they went into over kill with the blue filter. Pretty depressing too. Oh and why it it called Pulse anyways??

I was really disappointed in the film as well. Boring and amateurish are accurate, IMO.

Finished up D.N.Angel. I have to admit I bought this cause I liked the drawings and it sounded interesting. After the first few episodes though I was kind of disappointed, I thought I got some overly cutesy romantic comedy. However after about halfway it starts picking up and the last 7 or 8 episodes everything starts getting really good. In fact I thought it was quite awesome. Turned out to be a lot more complex than it seems at first and there's some pretty nice character development. You just have to be patient but it paid of IMO. If I hadn't bought it I don't think I would have bothered finishing it but I'm glad I did.

Excellent series... cleanest I think I've ever seen as well. No language, sexual content and not much violence till the end.

Play Misty For Me - Unless you have a 70's decor fetish, or a think for ridiculously hyper-machismo men, it's a waste of time. It's an OK sort of thriller until you think it's over, and then there's this really silly and pointless montage, and then the movie starts back up. And basically ends the same way it ended before the montage.

There Will Be Blood - My date didn't like it at all. I think his words were "Pointless." Or "Nothing really happened" or something like that.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I said it's like a Van Gogh painting; I wouldn't want it on my wall, but I think it's amazing. Not just a good movie, but good - great - filmmaking.

I totally cheered with DDL got the Oscar. He deserved it. EXCEPT for the accent, horrible cartoonish thing, a la his Gangs of New York character (his accent nearly ruined every scene he was in).

And I compared it to The Straight Story. TWBB just shows how truly talented Paul Thomas Anderson is.

And the sdtk. was amazing.

No Country For Old Men - There Will Be Blood was better. I don't quite get why Javier B got the Oscar, either. There wasn't much to his role. Tommy Lee Jones did what he always does. Josh Brolin was good. He was one of my few "crushes" when I was younger, thanks to Young Riders. He done aged goood. Kinda a lot like Fargo...eh.

We saw Vantage Point with a friend this weekend.

We joked on the way home that at one point, we were thinking the movie was like a more serious Groundhog Day of some kind.

It was good, only a couple of inconsistencies in the scenery...I did like knowing everyone's story by the end.

I haven't seen it....but it sounds like I should keep it in mind if my teenagers are in the mood for anime any time soon. We've got Illusion On Demand now and the Funmation Channel (linear and On Demand) so we do have some different choices airing on FIOS TV that we didn't have with Comcast.

For myself, Sony is finally releasing the first season of Blood+ on DVD next month, and it's at the top of my Netflix que. I certainly do not want to spend over $100 on it. I haven't seen the first season at all, since I started watching it in the fall.

As far as being patient, isn't that the way with many anime series? They make you figure out over time what is happening. There's usually another puzzle piece around the corner for you to fit into the plot.

Yes, but this seemed to move slower in that regard. Maybe it was just me though, I was expecting it to have a lot more action. Plus, it was so lighthearted with puppy dog love triangles and light comedy, I wasn't expecting it to get any darker than a Pokemon episode.

The Illusionist

I thought I remembered this movie getting good reviews, but I don't know why. Fancy old clothes don't make for a good movie ya know - I mean, really? Who was suprised at the ending? I guessed it straight away - the bit with her, and that it was all mechanics. I really can't think of anything about this movie I found interesting.

Man, I just watched Into the Wild, and Hal Holbrook was totally robbed. I didn't see, after viewing No Country For Old Men yesterday, why Javier B got it, and now I DEFINATELY don't, in light of Hal's performance in this movie - which is about the only thing any good in it.

It completely lacks the emotional gravitas it needs - it's heavy-handed sdtk adds a comedic angle. I mean, if anyone was going to like it, it'd be me. I agree/share his thoughts and ideas, having said really similiar things like, "Careers are a 20th-century invention. I don't want one," choosing to live homeless, etc., but this movie just...was cheesy and dumb. Finesse-less melodrama. And not all that great, technically.

I happened to find a review that pretty much sums up my thoughts, here are some excerpts:

We're supposed to see his decisions and actions as the birth of a free-spirited soul, but we're also seeing classic signs of suicidal ideation. From the outset, Chris doesn't come across as unfettered ...

Even with voice-over drawn from real-life letters and documents, though, we don't get a real sense of McCandless -- he's supposed to be this pure, uncompromising seeker-of-truth; he more often comes across on-screen as a smug, unlikable narcissist, exactly the sort of anti-capitalist you can only become if you spring from an immensely privileged background.

...all he's asked to deliver here is sensitive-Jesus-boy poses; the scenes of Hirsch, flannel-clad, arms outspread, atop magnificent vistas are cliché enough; layer a score heavy with Eddie Vedder's portentous croak over that moment and it's overkill.

Grizzly Man has a similiar protagonist and plot, and was much superior. I was curious about the reactions of his family and people in the movie, but haven't found anything with that.

Seriously. Hal Holbrook should have gotten that Oscar.

You too, Paul Thomas Anderson!

This is turning out to be my personal movie-watching thread!

Last night we watched Tenacious D - Pick of Destiny

There's nothing in it you haven't seen in their stand-up or TV show - or anything Jack Black has ever done, anywhere.

But, it made me laugh, several times. I think it'd have been better if it'd come out ten years ago (when we wouldn't have seen it all before).

Though, unless you think making a bong out of Satan's horn is funny, you probably won't like it at all...

Man With the Movie Camera

A great, innovative Russian film. Amazing editing.

4/5

All the Real Girls

So good. The cinematography is beautiful, the characters are real, and the story fits so well.

4.5/5

The Brave One

Quite good, though a bit too heavy on the monologues. Extremely thoughtful.

3.5/5

Nosferatu

3.5/5

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

4/5

Shadow of the Vampire

What a great film. Willem Dafoe was fantastic as Max Schreck.

4/5

Rosemary's Baby

3.5/5

Rebel Without a Cause

You can't get much better than this. Completely blew me away.

5/5

Black Sheep

Had it's moments, but it was overly predictable and dull. The music is a disgraceful ripoff of Bernstein's "The Great Escape" score.

2.5/5

Mrs. Henderson Presents

I found the reason for the nude theatre to be rather, ummm, interesting. Because her son didn't have a chance to see a woman live before he was killed in the war, she doesn't want that to happen to any other young man.

The argument that as long as they didn't move it could be considered art was quite brilliant though.

I wrote a paper on MWAC for my Russian film class.

All the Real Girls is one of my favourite movies.

I watched The Reckoning. It was OK. Tried to be everything, murder mystery, romance, comedy, morality play...ended up being rather like a medieval Scoob and the gang, trying to reveal Old Man Smith's crimes.
