I just heard of Penelope today... I kinda wanna see it. Haven't seen a trailer or anything but it sounded interesting.
Anyway I saw Beowulf. It was waaaay better than I was expecting. I never read the story and really had no clue what it was about. The trailer didn't appeal to me that much. But ah man I wish I would have seen this in theatres in 3-D... I'm sure this would have looked so awesome. I wish they had like a 3-D version released on DVD with glasses or something. Anyway it was pretty good IMO. I wasn't expecting much and its not great by any means. The characters annoyed me a bit though. Maybe if they wouldn't have tried so hard for realism and made em more... cartoon like it would have been better.

Beowulf was fantastic! I thought they did a really good job with the story, making it more of a morality tale, as opposed to the original -basically a warrior that kills loads of monsters and did lots of cool stuff. However, if you're interested in the original, my favourite version is the one by Seamus Heaney.
Recently saw Atonement. After my initial disappointment over the film not ending the way I wanted it to, once I'd stopped grieving for the characters, the whole concept kept coming back. Its one of those films that keeps getting better in your head, because it leaves so many things unanswered.
Saw Time Bandits for the first time. I would have loved it as a kid! still, its really good.
Saw Ratatoulle (can't spell!!) loved every minute of it! Thought Ian Holm's character stole the show, and the rat was so cute!

Into Great Silence
Watched it this morning. This is the documentary that Philip Gröning single-handedly made while living for several months within the Grande Chartreuse in the Swiss Alps. The Carthusian monks in the monastery have sworn to secrecy while there, aside from certain exceptions (accepting new arrivals, blessing the sacrament, etc.)
It's a fascinating documentary in that Gröning is seemingly as quiet as the monks themselves, making for a film that one should watch with a pot of coffee in hand. I'll admit, I found myself dozing off a few times during the close to 3 hours running time. But I would love to watch it again. It was a unique experience that I won't be forgetting any time soon.
At the moment I'm giving it a 3.5/5 rating, but it's sure to rise after another viewing.

4 months, 3 weeks, and 2 days -I was really let down by this one, mainly because it was probably the best reviewed film of all of last year and won the Palmes D'Or at Cannes -so I was expecting a lot. It's basically about a girl and her friend trying to get an abortion in 1980s communist controlled Romania (where abortion was punishable with prison sentence). It kind of lays the hardship on thick in the first half, with a completely evil mustache twirling abortion doctor, and in these sections it actually comes close (in terms of political/philosophical depth) to such overly black and white pro-choice drivel as "Cider House Rules." But to it's credit, it develops more shades of moral grey as the film progresses -to the point where at the end of the film it's really up in the air as to whether or not the characters regret getting the abortion because of the termination of the child, or because they regret what they had to go through to get the abortion (or even if they regret it mainly because of the status of their friendship, as it's hinted at throughout the film that one of the characters is manipulating the other in a rather sinister way). But in the end, usually any attempt at looking at the issue in an interesting/nuanced or new way is ignored in favor of cheap, self-righteous, depictions of suffering/degredation. For too much of the film the basic point is, "Look how terrible things are for women trying to get abortions in places where they are illegal!" -which is an entirely valid point to make, but the film makes the same point repeatedly, driving it home over and over with a sledgehammer.
I think another problem might just be that I've seen one too many Euro-art films, and stylistically this one is very much by the numbers. It's competently shot and directed, and the lead actresses are great, but I was basically able to tick off the check list of everything that was going to happen before it did -right down to the "shocking" (supposedly) shot of the dead fetus, and the abrupt resolutionless ending (which has kind of become a cliche in "art" films -it's great if used right, but here it just seems rote and perfunctory). Stylistically, for some reason I kept thinking of "The Dreamlife of Angels" as a comparison (although I absolutely loved that one -and this one is no where near as good), but all of the long steadicam shots of the characters doing nothing but walking down hallways and looking worried, the long shots which linger on empty streets long after the characters exit the frame, etc, etc, seemed more like a desperate attempt to mask what is basically just a slightly above average, run of the mill, "liberal issue of the month" plot, under a bunch of arty pretension.

It's like...one of those movies where it ends, and you're like, "Oh, I just watched a movie."
Part of the problem - if not the total problem - being Christina Ricci's utter inability to do much of anything creating presence or believability. Oh look, it's Christina Ricci in a pig nose (she looked great, I can't help but wonder if they cast her passed solely on how good she looked in the appliance)...now she's happy...now she's sad...grrrr, Christina Ricci...grrr...
Peter D was brilliant as usual...he's so great.
I watched Lars and the Real Girl. It's sweet and charming - I can't remember if I posted about it, either. 
Anyways, if you've seen it, or are going to rent it, you have to also see the documentary I know I've posted about, Real Dolls. I think having seen that (twice) dampened some of the comedic value LatRG might have had.
But it (Lars and the Real Girl) is sweet and charming - though I couldn't stop thinking, "Man, they are lucky to have Ryan Gosling..." the movie rests heavily on his talented shoulders.
Also watched Why Change My Wife? which I loved. Jaw-dropping costumes and sets/props. Total porn for a costume/fashion lover like me. Gloria Swanson plays a prim and proper wife who divorces her (yes, they divorced back in the good ol' days! Shocking!  ) husband after he stays out too late one night...and then gets him back.

Just caught Disturbia this weekend on HBO. Really disappointing. I don't know what I was expecting, but the story took a long time to get moving, and when it finally did it was very predictable..if you ever watched any horror movies you pretty much know exactly what will happen. I thought I had remembered this as being a hit? Not sure why...

3:10 To Yuma - Though I enjoyed it while I was watching it, except for mass predictibility, now I'm more lukewarm to it. Predictable, and I didn't like the ending.
Dreamgirls - Glad Jennifer Hudson got the Oscar, and Beyonce totally got snubbed. Her lip-synching scenes were especially bad. Not really much to this movie...really.

I have to admit that sometime ago, I caught a glimpse of Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, just for the morbid sense of seeing how awful or stupid the sequel is.
Truth be told, it's worse--especially when one considers how mean-spirited the "humor" is in the sequel. No wonder why it garnered the most in that year's Razzies!*
*Raspberry Awards, dubiously bestowed on whatever year's worst movies.

No reservations- with Catherize Zeta Jones. It's okay. a so-so rental for the night when it's snowing outside. Movie made me hungry though.
Mr Magorium's Wonderful Emporium- liked the first part but 'not sure halfway through the movie with the theme of -- spoiler alert in white- Mr Mag's death -- maybe for older kids but my 4 year old nephew was out ready to watch Diego again when the movie starts getting to be depressed. I guess was hoping more like Willy Wonka throughout but the drama was I think not too kid relevant-- at least with my 4 year old watching it.

Blech...has to have been written by foreigners. Surprisingly, it gets better at the end to the point of being enjoyable, as opposed to the first most of it.
Sikh woman comes to the US to marry her childhood fiance who, of course, is engaged to skinny blondie and doesn't want anything to do with her. So, she gets "Americanized," (read: skimy clothes, weight loss, contacts, straight hair) and then he does fall in love with her...or does he??

Spiderwick Chronicles. (IMAX format).
It's very much of a kids movie but did have some rather violent scenes.
Mr Bean's Holiday.
It's funnier if you watch it with a group of people.
Haven't seen much else since I quit Netflix a few months ago.

The Last of the Mohicans.... I really liked it. The final climatic scene at the end would definitely have to go down as one of my all time favorite movie scenes. 6-7 minutes with absolutely no dialog, fantastic music, and beautifully shot along the cliffs. There were some other pretty nice scenes but that was definitely the shining moment. Great soundtrack too. I could have sworn the song "I Will Find You" came from this movie too but I didn't hear it during the credits... Anyway, I think I'm gonna buy this one =D
I know its older but if you haven't seen it I'd really recommend it if you're looking for a great adventure movie =)

Nah, I found out what it was. It was only released on DVD (in the US anyway) as a "Director's Expanded Edition". 5 minutes removed, 8 minutes added and the song was removed from that scene.

Dancer in the Dark.
I was really getting into the movie and then the dvd froze up half way through and wouldn't play. Grrrr. Never saw how it ended.
Renting movies from a local library was a bad idea as the condition of the dvd's are appalling.
