27 Dresses- I love chick flics and I've seen almost all of them but 'did not care much for this movie and I like both Katherine Hiegl and James Marsden but it's just something just did not click. So I was dissapointed.

Watched Iron Man this afternoon. It lived up to my expectations. Not perfect, but a great superhero film. And yeah, staying after the credits is a must.

Atonement
I didn't like it. It needed to have something more to say about the human condition or character than it did to rise above being nothing more than a simple, morality tale. It was a simple lesson on the damage lies can do, and nothing more. Nothing deeper.
And I feel the ending; Tellis 'giving them the happiness she denied them' on the pages of a book is a self-deceptive cop out, and far from being atoning. Perhaps that was the point? If so, I liked the film even less.

Just seen Made of Honor today......cute, funny and more of a chick flick.
Although my hubby liked it too.
Next movie we will see most likely will be Speed Racer.

Saw 27 Dresses this weekend, and I thought it was just so-so. My daughters liked it, though.

Hors de Prix -This one was surprisingly good, as far as romantic comedies go. It has that Audrie Tatou (sp?) woman from "Amelie" in it and is about a woman who hustles older men for money, but falls in love with a bell boy. It sounds dumb, but it's much smarter than you're typical Rom/Com. I imagine someone will buy the rights a make a dumbed down American version starring Julia Roberts, or something.

Saw Expelled this past Sunday; I had to say it's still impressive, considering Ben Stein seems to be borrowing heavily the same kind of political documentary motif at best, schtick at worst, of not only Michael Moore, but even Errol Morris (think Thin Blue Line, or even his more recent fare, The Fog of War, Standard Operating Procedure). In short, I think it can be something of a conservative/Christian take on Fahrenheit 9-11/Bowling For Columbine.
Vengeance Is Mine.
It's somewhere between depressing and depraved affair, more so since as posted earlier, it's based on a true story.
PREMISE: Japanese Catholic con man goes on a killing spree, while scamming his victims on the side from the post-war years of Japanese history, all the way to the mid-60's (think the Tokyo Olympics), right when he gets hanged for his crime. The flashbacks gives the audience get more than an eyeful of the anti-hero's past, most disturbingly is his pious Catholic Dad (hint: the part where the latter decided to take up the husband's role for the former's wife--never mind the fact that Mom's still alive, but gravely ill)    .
I guess that's why I find it more edifying for (director) Shohei Imamura, to make much more light-hearted fare towards the end of his life, such as The Eel (Unagi), and Dr. Akagi.
Next stop; Henry: Portrait of A Serial Killer.... Yeah I know: I can be too morose at times (with true-crime dramas).  *
*perhaps get some kind of moral/human study of how "unsettled" people came to be?

I'd never put Errol Morris in the same sentence as either Michael Moore or Ben Stein. He operates on an entirely different level. Something like "Fog of War," for example, while taking on "political subject matter," doesn't really function in the same way that something like Farhenheit 9/11 does. Morris has a basic eye for human character that lies at the center of all of his documentaries. The genius of something like "Fog of War" was that in the end it really wasn't about Vietnam at all, as much as it was about McNamara as a human being acting in particular circumstances (and one of those circumstances includes the act of being questioned in Morris's unique brand of interview that he's developed over the years). Even his new one on Abu Graihb (sp?) is more about the nature of photography and what the act of taking pictures means to people in this context, than it is a political expose.
In this sense I really don't see his later "political" documentaries as being all that different from any of his less political documentaries. They all basically boil down to similar universal questions, despite the overt topic, which I think is what makes him rise above most modern documentarians (In fact, I would argue that Morris is probably the best American documentarian ever. I can't think of anyone who could challenge him, except maybe the Maysells brothers -but they really haven't been as productive as Morris has been).

Sweetland~a postWWI love story about a farmer and the bride his parents send for him. I was happy that they made some of the characters (the minister especially) more complex and acting by situation rather than simply prejudiced. I did feel that the mix of old love story, more current storylines were mixed up too much. It took energy away from the story.
Lars and the Real Girl~after seeing this I turned to my husband and said "probably the sweetest story you will ever see about a lonely man and a sex doll." Don't be put off by the subject matter. A fairly innocent story about a man trying to learn to connect with other people.
Some seasons of the Canadian series Corner Gas. We love this show. I think it captures small towns in a sly and funny way. Great casting.

The Savages - with Laura Linney and Philipp Hoffman Seymour. Excellent movie about a brother and a sister who has to make a decision on their elderly father. I can relate so much since hubby and I are in the stage of our lives with our fathers. Mine in the nursing home and hubby's Dad has dementia. The movie revealed the frustrations, the guilt, the anger when making decisions for your parents but it brought the characters close as ever in their relationship as brother and sister.

Made of Honor. That movie is your typical cheesy romantic-comedy movie. It was crass at times and there was a nude scene that caught me by suprise. If I had known before hand I would not have seen the movie.
