How does one respond to Malachi 3:8-10? quote: Malachi 3:8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, 'In what way have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings. 3:9 You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation. 3:10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this," Says the Lord of hosts, "If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it. Verse 1 chapter 1 where God says I have loved you. And the fools reply was how have you loved us. Reading the entire passage of Malachi one sees that God is God. Man is to be in obedience to God and the obedience "should" have come from a heart that loved God because God first loved them. Instead they held contempt for God and even said evil about God in giving their foolish ignorant opinions and actions. Robbing God is about withholding from Him what should go to him and seeking excuses to do so. There "is" no excuse to withhold from God what belongs to him. Make no mistake God knows one's heart and any exucse cannot stand up to the Lord. The last paragraph in the book shows us how the righteous will responded. We also see "again" the principle that God corrects those who are in disobedience to him and rewards those who are in obedience to him. We are no longer under the "curse" if we are saved but that does not mean that God does not correct us when we are disobedient to Him. (one sign to see if you are is child is if he corrects you) (BTW they were under foreign rule so this had NOTHING to do with the government it ONLY had to do with the place and people who were selected by God to carry out his work on earth - the temple at this time contained the ONLY storehouse - to understand the history of this time one must have studied all the books of histoy. Most scholars believe Mal. was the prophet sent during the time around Neh. 13 but inorder to understand Neh 13 you need to have read and understood the books of history which came before this time. Note God did not say you are robbing the needy or the government rather you are robbing ME. spiritural concept here.) quote:
Matthew 23:13-23, where He is denouncing the Pharisees and Scribes for their hypocricy and their outward apparance of 'religion'... :17 "Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifyeth the gold? :18 "And whosoever shall swear by the altar it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it is guilty" :19 "Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?" It sounds to me (correct me if I am wrong) that Jesus is speaking against the religious people who put more faith in their gift, and their ability to give, then they do to the One who sanctifies us. This passage is about being untrustworthy in our words. It's about twisting our words so that we can get out of doing what we said we would do. quote:
In the prayer of the publican and the sinner, God is more pleased by the humble admittance by the sinner, that doesnt try to wow God with how 'good' he is, but acknowledges that he is and has nothing to offer, but pleads for God's mercy. I am not disagreeing with giving gladly, from the heart, but a lot of you sound to me like you feel justified because of what you give/do. The problem with the prayer, fasting and giving of the Pharasees was that they did it for the Praise of Man. Jesus told us to give, pray and fast to give God glory not seek it for ourselves. I don't know of people who give in Church who stand and announce how much they are giving. In the churches I have attended it's a time or prayer and worship so that God is magnified and not the giver. quote:
Here is a question to those who like to mention 'first fruits', and I am sencerely asking here, wouldnt that mean everything, not just cash???? I have a garden now, so I am honestly asking, do I give the first fruits of my veggies?? I actually tried bringing in some veggies to church, and the woman at the desk looked at me like I was crazy, and a moron. The principle of first fruits mean we give to God what is the BEST we have. It's the "first" of our increase. Worthy gifts to God. (read the entire book of Malachi to understand this better and think about "who God IS". We don't give God our "left overs". Nothing is to come before God. We give him our first and best. (reflection of how one views God) The principle of the tithe is to give off our increase. Giving money in stead of wood, land, jewerly, family possessions, businesses, stocks, produce, etc. is how most people handle the situation you faced. Some people who live in the country do tithe in the way you mentioned. It is common in my church for people to share their produce in this way but it is oftentimes beyond the tithe and is a way to help the poor in our church. quote:
Arent most of the churches that are preaching on the law of tithing preaching on Sunday? I have never attended a church that preached the tithe law so I can't reply to this. All the churches I have attended teach the tithe principle. quote:
I am truly seeking here, not trying to get out of giving. I have some issues though. Then I would suggest you take this up with the leadership of your church. I can't respond to this because I don't know if your church budget gives money to missions every week, has a benevolance fund and the like. Eli's son's were doing terrible things with the tithes and offerings. God held Eli and his son's responsible for what they did wrong. Leaders will be judged by a higher standard than those under them. We each will stand before God alone and give an account whether we were obedient to him or not. Nehemiah 13 goes with the passage from Malachi where God told the people they were robbing him. Notice the temple priest was DOING WRONG but God still had his prophet Malachi say they were robbing from Him. God corrects folks we don't. We just obey God and trust that He will work all things out to our good and His Glory as long as we obey him. 6 While all this was happening, I was not in Jerusalem, because I had returned to King Artaxerxes of Babylon in the thirty-second year of his [reign]. It was only later that I asked the king for a leave of absence 7 so I could return to Jerusalem. Then I discovered the evil that Eliashib had done on behalf of Tobiah by providing him a room in the courts of God's house. 8 I was greatly displeased and threw all of Tobiah's household possessions out of the room. 9 I ordered that the rooms be purified, and I had the articles of the house of God restored there, along with the grain offering and frankincense. 10 I also found out that because the portions for the Levites had not been given, each of the Levites and the singers performing the service had gone back to his own field. 11 Therefore, I rebuked the officials, saying, "Why has the house of God been neglected?" I gathered the Levites and singers together and stationed them at their posts. 12 Then all Judah brought a tenth of the grain, new wine, and oil into the storehouses. 13 I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, with Hanan son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah to assist them, because they were considered trustworthy. They were responsible for the distribution to their colleagues __________ To understand the tithe principle and the principle of the first friuts you have to focue on God. Fear of the Lord "is the beginning" of wisdom and all kinds of understanding. ALL scripture must be studied from a heart that is in awe of our Holy Perfect God and His Son. A heart that is seeking to know and understand God's ways and a heart that is desiring to obey Him.......blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Make no mistake it's about God (not the needy, the poor, the church, our circumstances, the wicked, the lost, the leadership, or anything else we like to turn our attention to. It's about GOD.
