What are the final specs for the new machine? :)

Also, did you get Vista 64?

Yes, I got Vista Home Premium 64-bit.

Final specs:

New Parts:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 (2.53Ghz, 3MB L2 Cache)
Heatsink: Cooler Master Hyper TX2
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L
RAM: 4GB (2x2GB) Mushkin DD2 800 5-5-5-18
Video Card: Radeon 3780 HIS IceQ3
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB
Power Supply: Corsair 520HX
IDE/SATA to USB adapter
Various cables, fans and thermal paste.

Reused Parts
Case: Antec 1030B
Monitors: Dell 2001FP (20.1" LCD, 1600x1200), Dell 1025TM (17" CRT, 1024x768)
Keyboard: Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro
Mouse: Logitech G5
Optical Drives: Lite-On DVD-RW, Pioneer slot-loading DVD
Speakers: Logitech z-680
UPS: Belkin F6C120-UNV
TV tuner: Asus TV-FM 7133 (haven't plugged this in to see if Vista recognizes it, nor have I even installed Linux yet)
Scanner: HP 5100C (which Vista doesn't recognize, but XP will. If I'm gonna dual boot for Gametap anyway, and the cheaper mobo had a parallel port, I figured I might as well keep it. It's a good scanner.)

I tell you, I'm really glad I got the IDE to USB adapter. Not only did it make transferring old files pretty easy, but I was able to use my old 80GB drive to image my new install, and I think I'm going to use my old 40GB to image my sister's laptop (hopefully it's USB 1.1 won't make that impossible.)

That smoothness is because with those specs you're probably running around 200fps or 300fps on HL2. A friend and I both upgraded our computers....

C2D 3GHz (E8400)
He has a 8800GTS, I have 9600GT
He has 2GB DDR2-800, I have 4GB DDR-2 800, OCZ Platinum, 4-4-4-15
Both have sata drives, 8-16MB caches

He's running XP, I'm on Vista Ultimate 64. I'm pretty sure there is a cap at either 200 or 300fps. Granted, our monitors (LCD) can't actually display that.

At 1600X1200 with 4xAA and 16xAF, I was actually topping out in the hundreds for HL2, and dipping maybe to 40 during heavy action. However, in HL2:Ep2 (playing through the developer's commentary) I had to take off AA because the new flashlight and it's object shadows. Whenever I turned on the flashlight my frame rate would drop into the teens, even without AA it still dropped down to twenty at times. With the flashlight off, I was getting really smooth gameplay.

Yeah, my buddy with his 8800GT was playing with the same specs and had around the same results, just faster. Not even HL2: Ep2 dropped that low though, only Crysis is that killer. He can play most of Crysis at 1280x1024 with the extreme detail mod turned on.

Since you have a DX10 video card, I highly recommend trying out World In Conflict. No matter what any review says, DX10 properly done is way better than DX9 in terms of visuals.
