figmentPez -> RE: Windows Reverse from Vista to XP? (5/26/2008 6:32:00 PM)

quote:
ORIGINAL: Locke PLUS - MS is phasing out support for Windows XP (clicky), and more versions will follow in their attempt to make Windows Vista the mandatory option for consumers. That's a link to the end of support for XP Service Pack 1. Most XP users will be running SP2 by this point, if not SP3. Microsoft will continue to support XP for a while yet. They extended support for Win98 multiple times, and XP was a more popular replacement for 98 than Vista is for XP (at least, so far.) Complaining that support for XP-SP1 is ending is like complaining that Apple no longer supports OS X versions 10.0 - 10.2 quote:
No more MS security updates, Ah, yes, because security patches are somehow a bad thing, except when they come from Apple? It may not happen as often that Mac updates cause conflicts, but it does happen and there have been cases where people have lost all their data because of it. Microsoft may not be as fast as they should be, but security updates are a good thing, even if they carry a risk of conflicts with software/hardware. quote:
no more service packs, Why have a free service pack to a Windows OS, when Apple will gladly charge you $130 for a point release of OSX? Windows and OSX have a very different model for OS updates, and it's very difficult to make a general comparison between the two. Service packs, like security updates, are not a bad thing. quote:
no more anti-virus programs & RAM-guzzlers. I'll grant you no anti-virus... for now. If OSX should make headway in the market, the more people who use it, the more it will become a target for hackers. Macs are NOT completely free from viruses, even now, and they never have been. Just ask my mom. Back in the days of System 6 and Mac clones, my mom's Outbound became infected with pretty much every Mac virus known at the time, because she transferred information via floppy disc at a conference. She'd been told that Macs don't get viruses. There are numerous reasons to choose a Mac. Not enough of them apply to me, but that's mainly because I'm a gamer who wants to be able to assemble his own hardware. However, not every reason touted by Mac fans is actually valid, and it really bugs me when any sort of dis-information is spread.
