Well if the main instrument is a guitar then it's "Country Gospel" unless of course it's REALLY loud and out of tune then its CCM (oops did I say that outloud) LOL j/k you all....

Yeah, yeah, yeah. [:D] [:D]

TQ_Fan_4_Life -> RE: Are SG Groups using too much extra instrumentation? (5/27/2008 10:32:31 PM)

In my opinion the piano as the centerpiece instrument is more tradition than anything else. That and the fact it brings more fullness to a song than anything I can think of.

I agree about the tradition point. But an organ could also provide the fullness too.

Or a harp...[:)]

utilityfielder -> RE: Are SG Groups using too much extra instrumentation? (5/27/2008 11:38:18 PM)

or a harmonium or accordion or even bagpipes.

TQ_Fan_4_Life -> RE: Are SG Groups using too much extra instrumentation? (5/27/2008 11:39:29 PM)

they do. a piano is just keeping with history that you need a piano or it isnt SG. and that is being judgemental

Kerrlaw -> RE: Are SG Groups using too much extra instrumentation? (5/28/2008 12:29:50 PM)

How about a pennywhistle and a tambourine?

GospelProducer -> RE: Are SG Groups using too much extra instrumentation? (5/28/2008 12:49:36 PM)

Or maybe a set of spoons and a washboard?

dixiebass1 -> RE: Are SG Groups using too much extra instrumentation? (5/28/2008 5:50:40 PM)

NO JOKE!!! I saw a group last year that uses all tracks and had an elderly woman playing the spoons into a mic of her own the whole time. it was like being in the twilight zone.

Actually I have an LP from the English Folk genre where a pennywhistle and tabor were used.

youngartist -> RE: Are SG Groups using too much extra instrumentation? (5/28/2008 8:28:35 PM)

Isn't it a pennywhistle or something of the sort that they use on BF&A's "If It Takes A Valley?" That said, they don't play it themselves...[:D]

utilityfielder -> RE: Are SG Groups using too much extra instrumentation? (5/28/2008 8:38:47 PM)

If you have a non traditional band with no trumpets, trombones, baritones, tubas, or french horns, can it still be a brass band?

You gotta love it.[sm=cool.gif]

2 of my most favorite artist use alot of instrumentation The Hoppers, and Greater Vision,
I really love the full sound it gives them.

On the other hand I will agree that some groups have alot of orchestral music that is almost the feature of the song... almost like the orchestra is the artist...
I think the main purpose of a track or band... is to showcase the artist... and if in the midst of showcasing is out does them... then back off...
but for the most part I think there is a good balance...

I totally agree with GospelProducer! and I would like to take it a step further and say that when I go to a live concert, I would like to hear live...and I do mean fully LIVE vocals instead of stacked tracked vocals recorded in a studio somewhere in order to create some full choir like sound that covers bad singing...I wish that the groups would have the confidence to sing live on the whole song, and not just on the solo or duet lines! Please Stop faking, either do a live concert or just save gas money and stay home.

And another amen

A vocalist or vocal group that performs with minimal or no accompaniment is like a trapeze artist who performs without a net. It is scary for them but the results are very satisfying.

upnorthguy -> RE: Are SG Groups using too much extra instrumentation? (5/30/2008 10:58:44 PM)

I get a kick out of groups who go to great lengths to tease the crowd by asking if they like the old songs with just piano. Usually the crowd cheers, however the group then only does two.
I listen to my old Statesmen albums and can hear the quality of the voices and what they are doing vocally. Many people today want to hear the loud instrumentation as they are used to "noise" and could care less about quality singing. I love watching the Dixies because it is all them, no fakery. When I see Ernie and SS holding their mikes two feet away and still getting a clear sound, I know what is happening. They are good actors.
