...except they do the same thing when they're just singing with a piano, and sound no different then.[:)] (Sorry, y'all! I often let stuff pass, but every now and then I give in to the urge to say something nice about a group in a setting like this! And it's just as likely to be the Inspirations as EHSS.[;)])

Dixie Echoes ..... None of this extra stuff..... two mikes, a piano and bass. THAT'S IT. You know they are singing, no canned or stacked words or songs. A simple setup & sound system. No BIG bass speakers. No large equipment of stage. That's the best kind of music.

Well Daniel, I am new to this blogging stuff, but I am not new to the Southern Gospel Music Industry. I am also not new to reading everyone else's opinions on these forums. So that said, I will tell you the Truth. I don't harbor any ill will toward EH&SS, but I do dislike their Milli Vanilli style in Concert. I have seen them several times, and always wish They would have the guts to do an entirely LIVE concert! I don't have a personal beef with them, but they are faking, and I take serious issue with ANY group that does that!.....It is principle, and I don't think that I am asking too much!!! May God Bless the Dixie Echoes, The Inspirations, Spoken 4, and any other group that has the Heart to sing Live in Concert!

Amen upnorthguy!!! I applaud you for being brave enough to speak what many of us may be thinking, but are reluctant to post, especially with such a popular group as EH&SS. I often wondered what the SGM crowd thought of a group who can dance and hop all over the stage and not have any effect on their vocal ability to hold notes and stay on key, yet alone, not get winded and deliver a strong ending. When you see a group who can hold their notes and stay on pitch, with little instrumentation to drown out their vocals - it's a REAL TREAT!!!! :-) I don't have anything against instrumentation. Personally, I like to see a live band, which very few have these days. I applaud the groups/artists who can go out and deliver a live concert with little or no instrumentation and let their vocal ability and harmony shine for the Lord!

I too have been reading the opinions on these forums for some time now. I finally decided to jump in and join the on-line community! There are some very sincere and caring ppl on here. It seems to me that the main purpose of SGM is ministry. That is certainly the answer you'll get from most of the groups - they are in it for the "ministry." I just had to comment on one thing that caught my attention in reading this thread - the word "FAKE." We should all "take serious issue with ANY group that does that." I have seen the Dixie Echoes, The Inspirations and Spoken 4 in concert and these guys are truly talented! What you hear is what you get! There is nothing fake about their sound.

have said once and will again. a live band is the best. the tracks are good when can't afford a band, but live is live all the way. also agree with the vocals. can dislike them all want, but have seen Jason Crabb sing and can tell he is singing. as with all Crabb Family. they sweating, faces blood red, they singing with all they can to the Lord

When I go pay money to see a performance I want to see every aspect of the performance live. It can be with a big band or just an acoustic guitar or piano or even somebody playing the spoons, that doesn't matter. The operative term here is "live performance".

I've said this before, I don't care whether you're using tracks or a live band if the Spirit of God is not there then it will be of no effect to the Glory of God. I've heard live bands that moved my Spirit and I've heard those that completly were a show and dead as they could be. Same with tracks. I believe sometimes we get a little too legalalistic with all our proper professional opions on how God works. I've seen Him work with tracks and lots of instrumentation and I've seen Him work with a piano. Who we trying to impress God or the buisness?[:D]

I like the extra instruments, strings, steel guitars, mandolins, etc. But sometimes when they do their sound checks for the night, they put too much of a bass effect on the music, sometimes rattling windows.

I am with you on this one Quartet_Fan2008. And I do understand that with rising costs of gasonline and everything else, it is almost impossible for a group to afford to bring a live band on the road anymore....But when the track's orchestration overpowers the vocals and the group sounds like 8 or 16 cloned voices singing live...This Industry, that I LOVE, has got to change....I just want to see the majority of the Top groups in the SGM industry sing FULLY LIVE in concert whether it is Acapella, with piano, piano and bass, tracks, or a mixture of all the above...I truly just want to see People ,who have a God Given ability to sing and play, stay Focused on HIM and not be afraid to give the people a real LIVE concert.[:)]

If a group is going to use sound tracks and stacks, why even bother to sing ? Just fake the whole show. Maybe I could start a Bluegrass Band and just use tracks for the music. LOL

It doesn't bother me one bit if a group uses stacks, sound tracks, etc. Whatever a group wants to do is fine with me. If I know a group is doing that and I don't like it, I wouldn't go to the concert. It seems puzzling to me if one goes to a concert if you're going to be upset with the performance or performers. Each group is doing what's working for them. Go and hear what makes you happy. The bottom line is each group is singing to the Lord. Why should we as Christians care about anyone's method as long as they are successful. For me, I don't mind bands or just piano. I've been to several SSQ concerts (with just a piano player and dancing, etc) and have come away spiritually uplifted each time. The CDs I've purchased have been of fine quality and well worth the money. I've also been to several Gaither Homecoming concerts, with bands, and have enjoyed every minute of them.

I read most of this thread and there are a lot of good thoughts. Seems to me that most of the popular songs--ones that hit the charts--have a lot of instruments. Even full horn and string sections. So I guess what "sells" to the most people is the music. The 4 guys and piano/bass songs don't make the top charts. Of course, I know there are exceptions, like the Booth Brothers "Look for me at Jesus Feet." Also, I think it depends on the song. I cannot imagine "We shall behold him" without the full effect of strings, horns. But "Boundless Love" by the Cathedrals would sound odd with more than piano and bass.

It depends on the song, and it depends on the group! I do not think there is a "right" and a "wrong" way to do it! Just like there's a "color chart" to pick out colors that are pleasing to an individual, each individual decides what he/she prefers about music.

Most of these posts are the reason why I won't walk across the street to hear Signature Sound and a few other groups.I heard Earnie Haase yrs ago with the Cathedrals and I thought he was great then.I'm very dissapointed in him now.

When I listen to SG, I prefer only a piano and maybe a bass guitar most of the time. I know of one group that has released 3 CD's over the past couple of years in which they were accompanied only by piano and bass. Those three projects are three of their best sellers. I know of another group that is planning to release a project like that this year too and it may be one of their biggest as well. Sometimes other instruments are okay too. I like the variety that you get with the Isaacs with the fiddles, mandolin, upright bass, etc. And that does work for them but it wouldn't work with every group. The soft fiddle on their version of It Is Well With My Soul definitely makes it one of those glory bump songs! For the most part, though, it seems to me that the more music you have, the more it distracts from the message of the song.
