I hate to be a doomsayer here but I feel that your friend is in for a long hard road. Yes it is right to own up to his sin and atone for it, yes God will forgive him for this and his anxiety will be relieved as far as it concerns his relationship with the Lord. However, if he insists on keeping it from his wife and even lying to her if she confronts him about it then there will be further tension between him and his wife as the dishonesty will eat him up, believe me I know, I've been there. Also his relationship with the Lord will once again be hindered due to his dishonest dealings with his wife. You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. (1Pe 3:7 NASB) Also, while God will forgive him and his brothers and sisters in Christ may support him he cannot count on society, or in this case his employer, to be as lenient. His employer may wonder why the sudden change of heart and may look further into the matter and may press charges himself. Workers Comp will definitely have a case against him and may choose not to accept only restitution but may also want to file charges. It's a hard thing to do the right thing, I would suggest to your friend to read up on King David, specifically after his sin with Bathsheba (2 Sam 11 and 12). Psalm 51 is a cry of David's to the Lord over this sin, notice the depths that David sank into, the pain he felt. This is what sin does to us. For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom. Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise. For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar. (Psa 51:1-19 NASB) My heart goes out to your friend and I do pray for him. I pray that he does the right thing and I pray for favor in the eyes of his wife, his employer and WC. I pray for the strength he will need for the road ahead of him. And I pray for his eyes to be open now as it does seem that Satan has a good grip on him.
