AslansChild -> End of School Year Praise (5/29/2008 10:37:13 AM)

I usually come on here to ask advice or throw out a question. Today I wanted to float a new idea. This year was my son's first year in HS. Not only that but he also moved from public to a private school and left most of his friends. This year was amazing, although his academics started out slow he was able to get involved in two sports and music. He will be finishing the year with nothing lower than a B. Anyone else have a positive story to end the year?

We moved ds to public jr hi this year and he made the A honor roll each semester and now knows that he isn't a failure in Math and feel in love with history! I praise God for his dedicated teachers.

My oldest daughter graduated Cum Laude this past Saturday. She maintained a 3.93 grade point average through school. We are so proud of her for all her accomplishments throughout school and look forward to more in her future.

My middle daughter did not have a good algebra teacher the first semester. She was making an F. We switched her to a new teacher for her second semester and she now loves algebra and is making a B. She has decided she wants to be a math teacher. What a difference a good teacher makes.

My youngest has survived that rough transition year of 7th grade.

My son just "graduated" kindergarten and he is so happy. He has improved so much in every aspect of his academic and social life. He is such a blessing to me and I am so thankful for him.

Our YOUNGEST daughter "graduates" from Kindergarten next week.....and, the same happened here.....a very, very good experience for her....especially since she went into kindergarten with "speech issues"....she has improved so much over the school year, with help from not only us, but her very dedicated teacher and the school's fabulous speech therapist helped her out, as well....

she can't wait for 1st grade....

We put our oldest (8...2nd grade) into Christian school in January. We were having major headbutting at home every single day and my husband and I decided it was time for someone else to step into the role of teacher so I could just be mom for a while. It was a hard decision to make, but it was the right one for this time.

He is doing wonderful in school. He was not behind academically in a single area, which helps my ego a bit. His behavior at home has improved in many ways and we are seeing big steps of spiritual growth in him. He loves being with his friends and is already making plans to stay connected with them through the summer.

I am so thankful to God for this school being available to us, and for them being willing to take our tuition money all at tax time instead of payments throughout the year. Public school is not an option for our family at this time, so if a solid Christian school was not available, we would be "stuck" with homeschooling, which was not the right place for us this year or next.

Praise!
This school year has been great. Decent grades, and no family conflict like we had the past two years. I am the stepdad for a teen, and we had a lot of adjusting to do to get school performance on track.

It has been a lot of team effort from me and wife, plus I declared that we would have tutor -all year - regularly -- before problems crept up, and my stepdaughter has appreciated that help. right now, that is as close as I can get to private school.

It is very nice to see my stepdaughter be happy and confident about school. -Row1.

Hey all! Can't believe I didn't notice this thread til now.

Anyway! Here are my praises!

Ty, my eldest managed to make it through middle school! I know from experience that middle school is tough - BUT it didn't seem that way at all for him! He didn't get high enough marks in his Geometry class, so he'll have to retake that next year but that's okay too - but he is STILL one year ahead of the majority of his class. Off on a new adventure - High School here we come!

Aryn, had a FABULOUS 4th grade teacher and while the beginning of the year was rough as she was in a class with NONE of her closest friends, she came out of her shell, took some risks and made a bunch of NEW friends. She tested into the gifted program through our district and after asking a large number of well thought out questions decided not to go into the self contained gifted program and stay at our home - school instead. She has grown into a leader this year and it suits her! Her genuineist has served her well. Her passions for learning and self-motivation have revealed opportunities for her in peer tutoring, a program just started this year in the 4th and 5th grades at our school and she was one of 3 4th and 5 5th graders choosen by their teachers to lead the program.

Ethan - My Ethan, my little trouble maker. The one I thought was never going to make it through 3rd grade or survive the bus rides to and from school. BUT he also got a great teacher, the same one Aryn had the year before! And while he struggled his way through music and gym and occassionally Art (the more unstructured classes) even by the end of the year those classes were going well as well. AND the biggest plus of the entire year tho came in the last 2 weeks of school! He actually managed several "atta boys" from the bus driver, who he has struggled to please, to get a smile out of all year! Those smiles and "atta boys" have encouraged him to keep trying all the harder! Science was his best class this year, but due to budget cuts, a seperate science teacher for our elementary kids has been cut. The kids will still have science - it will just be taught by classroom teachers instead of a teacher whose sole job is to teach science. This will be rough on Ethan - BUT since our science teacher is tenured (and would have a job even if he wasn't) the district has had to offer him a regular classroom position and there is a possibility that Ethan will have this teacher next fall should he decided to take the open 4th grade position.

Last but certainly not least, Zoe - my baby. She thrived this year! Simply thrived! She did very well in everything - excelled and showed much leadership even as a 1st grader. She may be the youngest of the group sibling wise, but because she is she makes up for that in the classroom! She took risks this year and she came through with flying colors!

I too spent a lot of time at my kids' school! I love the teachers there and just being a volunteer whenever I can thrills me!

Blessings,

Garsy

Where to start!

We also send our children to a Christian school and praise the Lord for the school and especially the teachers.

Our children have successfully completed vision therapy and now can see their books without the page "floating around" on them. What a blessing it is for a teacher to be diligent and prayerful in trying to help and not automatically label a child. Grades are going up![:D]

We just returned from an award ceremony where our oldest (2nd Grade) received the "Onesimus" award for being the most helpful in the class. Our youngest (kindergarten) received the "Solomon" award for academic "Honors". I'm not sure what constitutes honors in kindergarten but we were all please just the same.

Praising the Lord for a great year!

MyMasquerade -> RE: End of School Year Praise (6/10/2008 12:40:26 AM)

Great stories everyone, I know you are all proud parents. [:)]

My daughter finished this year with all A's and B's, five of the A's were over a hundred because of extra credit. Her social studies was a 139 - A. She also got most improved in the grade, she won an essay contest for DARE. Being at our old church helped her apparently to know why drugs are wrong, wrong.

She made $120 with this report card.

Great thread idea:

DS #1 - High School Junior (public school) Has 1 more final to go tomorrow and is done. He had a great year and really challenged himself with AP and honors classes. He did very well and we are very proud.

DS #2 - 8th grade (public school) Has a few more days to go, will be done on Friday. He will have a formal 8th grade graduation on Friday night. He had a very rough year with being bullied. He rose above all that and joined a club against bullying. Through the whole thing, he never let his grades slip. He also did very well and we are very proud.

After we get through the last days of school I will have 2 in high school.

artemis -> RE: End of School Year Praise (6/11/2008 9:10:32 AM)

I'm not a parent, but I'm a teacher and I'm extremely proud of one of my students so I thought I'd share:

I teach jr. high Spanish and at the end of 8th grade, my students have to take an End of Course Exam to see if they get high school credit for Spanish or if they have to retake the course in 9th grade. I have a student who is extremely dyslexic and his mom and I had talked at the beginning of the year about whether or not he should even attempt to take a high school level class in jr. high. He's a hard worker and I'd had him the year before in 7th grade and we decided he would stay in the class, but he would know that he would probably have to work harder than any of the other students.

And he did. I've seen very few kids try as hard as that boy did. He came to tutoring, made himself study sheets, asked questions, etc. He was doing great the first semester. Everything looked good. And then the school decided that he was in danger of failing the standardized test (TAKS in Texas), so they started pulling him out of Spanish once a week for tutoring in his core classes (you know, the important classes... forget Spanish, it's not on the standardized test [8|]). Despite missing 20% of the classes the second semester for tutoring in another subject ([:@]), this student still did all the work he missed, spent extra time studying and asked me questions before and after school. When it came time for the End of Course Exam, he made a perfect score on the listening and reading portions of the exam and ended up with a 93% overall. Not bad for a dyslexic 13-year-old who was only in class 80% of the time!

(Oh, and he worked so hard that I never once had to implement the modifications that were available to him, such as extra time, not counting off for spelling, etc.)

That is just AMAZING!

Wanna come up to Indiana and teach my hubby? He's taking his second year of college Spanish this Fall. One of the last few classes he has to take before he graduates!

Blessings,

Garsy

This year our son did the "running start" program. I don't if everyone has it or not, so a brief description. Once a junior, students may take classes at the local community college in leu of high school classes or in addition to them. They can earn an AA degree at the same time they accumulate credits to graduate high school. We have been preparing DS for doing this since he was in 6th grade. He hated it and struggled mightily the first two quarters. We pulled in the reigns, prayed and talked with him. God has done a miracle in this young man's life and I've seen an amazing, miraculous change in him! He's done well academically his final quarter and grown alot spiritually. I'm so proud of him and so blessed! I'm looking forward to spending the summer with him even more now than usual!

TammyIsBlessed -> RE: End of School Year Praise (6/13/2008 6:08:51 PM)

Emma has done fabulously well in grade 1. I can't get over how well she can read already. It's incredible! The Animated Literacy program they use is simply amazing. It was fun to volunteer in her class (well, before Jacob was born that is). My husband is going to go with her class on their field trip next week - I'm glad he's getting this chance to see her in action at school.

Sophia can't wait to go to Kindergarten next year!!!
