Does anyone have an Oreck? I'm considering buying one. I still have my mother's old clunker of a Hoover

Yes I have an Oreck upright & canister that they gave my when I purchased the upright. Love them both.

We have a hoover upright, and it works great. It has "on board" attachments for cleaning the stairs. My only complaint with it is it is noisy. When I worked for a cleaning company, they always used upright vacuums because they had better suction.

Rexair Rainbow, had it for ....eleven? twelve? years now and it's still going strong. No idea how much they cost now, probably close to $2000, but they are quality machines and well worth the money.

we have a Kirby and I have always been impressed with how well it works. It might be pricey, but to me it is worth it because you pay the price up front for something that will last forever and you don't end up throwing away vacuum after vacuum year after year because they are so cheap.

If only their work practices are as good as their vacuum.

Luckily we weren't married yet, or she might have divorced me.

She bought it in Maine, and made the Kirby salesman sing the Kirby song before she would buy it.

It had it's own closet in her Maine house. When I met her it had stopped working, but probably could have been repaired for less than the cost of a Hoover. But that sucker took up a lot of room with the bulky attachments.

So did she throw anything of yours away in retaliation?

Did she make you buy her a new Kirby?

I thought maybe my husband and I would need counseling last year when I threw away his Amy Grant tape.

Well I am glad I am not alone in this calamity. Mine does not function the way I want it to. I know I've been having it for several years. But that's no excuse it should stop working efficiently.

Ah... the neverending search for a vacuum that actually "VACUUMS."

We've had... Dirt Devil, Kirby, Hoover, Rainbow, Electrolux, and a couple others. Right now we have a Hoover and a Rainbow. We use the Hoover more often than the Rainbow. Why? It's easier to use (I'm lazy).

But...

As with any mechanical device - they do require maintenance.

Bagless Vacuum:

1. Belts should be replaced about every six months. They will stretch and when you vacuum your carpet and your brush doesn't spin or slows down then you need a new belt.
2. Empty canister every time before you use it. If you pick up a lot of debris and you are still vacuuming - dump it again.
3. They have a filter. Take it out and clean it using a dry paintbrush (you'll be surprised how much crud you'll get off that filter). As an added bonus - you'll save yourself some quid too (those thing are expensive).
4. Check your hoses for clogs or cracks.

Vacuum with a bag:

1. Refer to 1, & 4 above.
2. Change you bag frequently. May be expensive but those things will clog up within minutes and affect your air flow thus the vacuums efficiency.

You can buy a decent vacuum for about $100. The cheaper ones will work (all I could afford for a couple of decades). They all do the job if you take good care of you vacuum.

Good luck.

We love our Dyson and have ever had a problem with it. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone having a problem with one, hmmmm . I would prefered the one for pet hair, but it wasn't available when I bought mine.

I hopefully have one that works really well now. =)

Our old vacuum was/is a rainbow (uses water, not filters/bags) but last night we went to Sears and bought THIS one. It's still in it's box, but hopefully it does a fantastic job. It was rated #1 (above a Dyson, for less $!!) by a consumer report type of study... (not sure that it was actually "consumer reports" but if not, it was very similar)

That is the vacuum I bought a few months ago and I hope you like it as well as I do.

We absolutely love our new vacuum!!! It works fantastic! We've nicknamed it "Kenny" because it's a Kenmore... and Kenny does a fabulous job! =)

LOL...now that is love!!!!
Ours gets used too often to have it's own closet...we don't ever put it away. We do however put it in front of the air conditioning door at the end of the hallway...it's kind of hidden from view and right by a laundry basket. We use it at least once a day though, so it's just easier to keep it accessible.

I used to clean a church and also owned a cleaning company. So have used a number of different brands. Here are the ones I remember along with how many I owned or the church owned.

Sanitaire/Eureka (2): (Sanitaire is like an all metal Eureka) good vacuum but pet hair gets stuck on the belt.

Simplicity (2): Good vacuum with it's belt located to one side and isolated from the suction path, eliminates some of pet hair getting stuck problem.

Oreck (3): Probably the best one I used only drawback is it is quite narrow.

Panasonic (3): I'd never buy another. Could just be the model we had but the motors kept going out in them.

Kirby (1): Decent vacuum ours was quite old and so had a few issues.

Get an Oreck. I've been through many a vacuum. Oreck is great. Lightweight, effective. The best. I bought mine online with a payment plan and I'm so glad I did.

I have a kenmore upright bagless and love it. You do have to empty it and rinse the filters but I actually don't even wash the filters very often. When it is full I take the canister outside and empty it in the trash. Then I take the cylindrical filter and tap it on the ground to knock out all the dust. It cleans well and keeps me happy. I've had it for about 3 years (actually maybe 4).

We have had a number of vacuums over the last 13 years. We've had a DirtDevil, several Hoovers, and recently purchased a Kenmore "Progressive with Direct Drive", which is beltless and bagless. I was so frustrated with our previous duds, that I was determined to buy a quality vacuum this time! I think it was on sale for a little over $200 at Sears. I love it! The attachements are extra long and it has a neat "Inteli-Clean" feature. You press the button for that feature and the light turns anywhere from red to green, depending on how clean the carpet is becoming. Green, obviously means go! It is the best machine we've purchased thus far and we love it!
