Is there a thread about this yet?

What do you think?

Do you believe it's possible for this type of language from the pulpit in trintiy to be something "new"?

Are any of you Catholic? I have a question. Does the Catholic Church have a stance on this or some way to disown a priest who does what he did and strip him of his title as priest?

I'm not sure what you're referring to, specifically. Where is this sermon and what makes it so 'new'?

I saw this on the news and just rolled my eyes. Father P. should leave the preisthood and stick with activism. He's done great things for his community and has a heart for the people, at least this is how how I view him.

I think if he had a heart for people he would have spent the time behind God's pulpit taking about Jesus and how he came to die so they might live.

He's more of an activist than a priest.

What was he doing there? Guest speaker? Whatever, it was deplorable. Is this typical of Trinity before, during, and after Jeremiah Wright?

More Liberation Theology tripe from the dazed and confused of the Catholic priesthood. The Cardinal in charge has enabled this situation and enabled this priest and it's gone on long enough, IMO. I pray that this priest comes to understand that love of worldly causes pales in comparison to love of God. His phony and contrived speaking style aside, he is not concerned with salvation of souls--a priest's sole and primary duty to his flock.

There are many channels of discipline available through canon law to the Cardinal. The question is whether he will make a stand or play the 'game of ignore' that got many in the Church in trouble during the Abuse debacle.

"In a statement released Friday, [Cardinal]George said:

The Catholic Church does not endorse political candidates. Consequently, while a priest must speak to political issues that are also moral, he may not endorse candidates nor engage in partisan campaigning.
Racial issues are both political and moral and are also highly charged. Words can be differently interpreted, but Fr. Pfleger’s remarks about Senator Clinton are both partisan and amount to a personal attack. I regret that deeply.
To avoid months of turmoil in the church, Fr. Pfleger has promised me that he will not enter into campaigning, will not publicly mention any candidate by name and will abide by the discipline common to all catholic priests."

We'll see.

yes it is typical of Obama's home Church of over 20 years. I have seen clips from a variety of "Speakers" and they are all goof-galls.

What's wrong with this sermon? The fact that he spoke about white entitlement? The fact that he said he saw this in Hillary?

As a white person, I can tell you that many of us (myself included) do feel entitled, and we are not willing to walk away from all that we have received, even if it was from sinful means)

How about the fact that the pulpit is hardly a place for political posturing? Out of all the clips aired from Trinity, and the number of times Jeremiah Wright has been on TV, I have yet to hear anything about Jesus Christ or the love and forgiveness that is offered for our sins.

I will say the guy did a remarkable impression of Hillary, though!

Barry claims that he is a new breed of politicain yet he keeps with the same quid pro quo practiced since the Fall, The Father has given sums of money to Barry's various election camapigns and Barry has been able to direct Illinois State grants to the Father's church programs. As a Senator, Barry was able to direct a US grant to the hospital where his sweetie sits as a board member.

When has it been ok for vile language to come from the pulpit? These men are false prophets, and does not take a much Biblical knowledge to see this fact.

It would seem that the IRS should swoop down on that Church for violation of the "No candidate endoursement rule".

Or at least for just general bad taste in speakers and Pastors.

Thanks

*shudder*

To be OT:
I agree the pulpit isn't for politics.

Anything else that I have to contribute on the study of white privilege isn't likely to be productive or received. (Consider the theory of the privilege knapsack.)

So, I withdraw.

It's hard now to say stay out of Politics when so many of the Christian right jumped on Bush's wagon.

Preached it from the pulpit.

Is there such thing a "white entitlement" of course there is.

Hillary is a prime example of it.

I attend a predominantly white church, and last week, Memorial Day weekend, we had a guest pastor who began his sermon with a joke:

Chelsea Clinton asked a marine was he afraid of being in Iraq. The marine replied, "The only thing I'm afraid of is, Osama, Obama and yo' mama!"

He then went on about how brave John McCain was during his captivity.
He peppered his "sermon" with several quotes from McCain. More quotes from McCain than from the bible.

Like I said before, I've also heard the following from the pulpit:

"I know the bible says to pray for the president. I'm praying for him alright, praying that a bullet hits his skull"

Bill Clinton was president at the time.

"If some of you are thinking of voting for a democrat, you'd better get down to the altar and get right with God."

Then there are the famous Christian Coalition "voter guides" that are still around, by the way, as some churches have taken it upon themselves to publish their own. The ones I've seen are nothing but republican propaganda.

So, it goes both ways, but no doubt some of you feel that because the GOP stands for God's ONLY Party, then it's justified when republicanism is preached from the pulpit.

Just like Colonel Oliver North's patriotism wasn't challenged when he said of sitting president Bill Clinton, "He's not MY commander in chief."

I think whether it comes from the right or the left, this stuff is horrible. Coarse jokes, cursing, and implying damnation for voting the 'wrong' party has no place in God's house.

That said, I heard the sermon in question, and thought it was hilarious listening to that guy try to imitate a black preacher. It was all just a load of hooey and I'm truly surprised he hasn't been removed from the pulpit by the Catholic church if this is habitual behavior.

This is a matter that deeply disturbs me - no church should act as an extension of any political party. As is, many evangelical churches have so tightly married their political and religious dogma that it's hard to tell where one begins and the other ends.

At any rate, I've grown very fatigued of each candidate's (meaning, Obama and McCain) pastor and/or spiritual advisor having become such a big part of each campaign. Be it Hagee, Wright, Phlager, or Parsely, all have made jackasses of themselves during their participation (be it intentional or not) in this election year.

Can't we just please get back to the issues?

And the AA church has a history of featuring Democrat candidates and preached it from their pulpits.
