I'm just having too much fun with this job! I found one of my old diaries--I didn't remember I still had it! Here is an entry from December 2, 1995. I was being just a bit overdramatic, I think. I worked so hard at Dad's store, trying to get a raise. I moved huge pieces of heavy furniture single-handedly, and when I left I was completely drained of energy and I had three bruises on my legs that throbbed. Then when I went home I knitted painstakingly for 2 hours until my fingers were nearly raw and bleeding. Then I sang until my voice was ruined learning mind numbling choruses and frills in the hardest song on earth, until my nerves were shattered. Then I stood on my aching feet for another hour slaving away in the cold dreary kitchen drying dishes into the wee hours of the night, and if that wasn't enough, DAD MADE ME CHANGE A LIGHTBULB! (Only 347 days till my wedding. (I've been counting down for 200 long, dreay days.) LOL! What a goose I was!

I just found one more entry in my diary that I had to share, and then I'll stop for now. I think I've made four posts in here on one day already! January 20, Saturday, 1996 I went to Dad's store to work as I normally do on Saturday mornings. Around lunchtime, Erick showed up, just around the time I was about to order a Stromboli sandwich from Pizza King. Since he looked hungry, I ordered some for him, and being the all-around nice person that I am, I even Paid For It. Then, for the rest of the day, I made him work. We got quite a lot done. I figured he could at least work for his dinner. The Bible says, "He who does not work, neither shall he eat!" Since I'd already fed him, it was only right that he work. I love Erick Jay Luper the first Only 298 days left

The weather has been so hot lately! The heat index has gone over a hundred for the last several days. I'm not sure exactly how long this heat wave has lasted, but I'm so glad to have air conditioners in our house! Yesterday we spend the day at Erick's parents' house and they don't have air conditioners. Erick was actually working on a house a couple of blocks away from his parents. He's building on a porch. He's been working in it for the past couple of weeks before or after work (depending on his hours) and on his day off (Wednesdays). It's looking really nice, but I'm anxious for him to be finished with it. He's been working so hard this summer, but it's time to slow down and re-focus our energies on ministry. We had an enjoyable day, even though we were hot and sticky. In the evening we went out and rode on Erick's brother's horses some more. He'd sold the one I rode on last time, so I rode a different one. This one did a lot better at knowing where I wanted him to go. I even got him to run a little bit this time, and found that bumping up and down in the saddle hurts! I need to figure out how to ride a horse the right way, I think, because on TV people look a lot more comfortable riding a horse than I was!

Today I finally finished my quilt! I started this quilt way back when we moved to Missouri that first year. I cut out most of the pieces in 2001, and then got distracted. I finished up cutting up the pieces and started piecing them a couple of years later and again stopped working on it. About a year before we moved back to Indiana I finally finished piecing the top, and I lost it when we moved. I finally found it in Erick's grandma's garage attic, and was happy to see that it hadn't been made into a mouse nest or anything while it was up there for nearly a year! In the past few months I've been working on putting it together and hand-quilting it. I spent about two hours a day on that for about two months, and today I finished it up by putting on the binding. It's done! It measures 90' X 90'. Originally I had planned to make it for our bed, but somewhere along the way I was reading about the Voice of the Martrys, and decided to sell it when it was finished and give them the money to help persecuted Christians. I wavered back and forth on that for quite awhile, becaues I really do love this quilt and would like to selfishly keep it, but I feel God wants me to give it to Him, so I'm going to. I've talked to my pastor about it some already, we just have to figure out the best way to go about doing that. Here's a picture of the quilt:

In case I disappear suddenly one of these days, it's probably going to be because my computer monitor is dead. It's been acting really funny lately. It's been jumping quite a bit, and yesterday when I shut it down the monitor wouldn't come back on. I turned everything back off and turned it on again, and it flashed a white spot in the middle of the screen and then came on. I don't know how much longer it can hold on. So this is just a heads up in case I go missing.

We had so much fun yesterday. After church we took the kids to Indiana Beach. The older four had earned free ride passes at the library's Summer Reading Program, and Erick's brother's wife had a couple of adult passes from her work that she didn't need, so we were all able to get in. Well, not all of us--the aforesaid husband's brother's wife babysat our littlest two so we could go. Rachel had already been with my husband's brothers's family a couple of months ago, and Timothy's too young to know what he's missing. Erick had never been on very many rides, besides a ferris wheel and a pirate ship ride I coerced him to go on with me back before we were married. He's never been thrilled about them, but decided to be brave and go on some with us yesterday. I took him on this one ride where we all sat sideways in rows, and it went around and around like a ferris wheel only instead of facing foward you all were setting sideways. It went really fast, too. Erick didn't take it too well--he said he felt like he did during his last stress test when they tried to see if they could put him into a seizure. Sarah was terrified, but everyone else enjoyed it. No more of those kinds of rides for Erick--I don't think he can handle him with all of the medical problems he's been through. There were only a handful of rides that we could all do as a family because Abby was too short to go on a lot of them. We did a water one where you rode in these boats with waterguns and pumped water on everyone else, and we did one where we drove old fashioned cars on a track. We rode the giant ferris wheel, and we went on the sky ride. That one freaked me out. I'm afraid of heights. I took Jay on a couple of roller coasters. They were so much fun! Jay was a little scared after the Hoosier Hurricane, but he liked the Lost Rollercoaster. I took him and Joy on the log ride. Erick took the younger ones on the train. It was fun, but I was absolutely exhausted by the time we went home.

We spent yesterday butchering chickens. I didn't help very much, though. I was content to stay inside and wash them and put them in freezer bags after Erick did all the dirty work. I think the total count was nineteen. He didn't go work on the porch he's been doing today--by the time he was done with the chickens he was worn out. We also went to the library for the first time in several weeks. We had a missing library book and I had cleaned the entire house looking for it and had not found it. It was overdue by a couple of weeks at least and I had renewed it as many times as they allowed. I was planning on just paying for it today, but then I decided to look in the station wagon. I had sent one of the kids to look there before, but hadn't looked myself. We haven't driven it in awhile, ever since we got the new van, and it really hadn't crossed my mind that we would have checked out the library books before that time. So I went and looked yesterday, and found it inside a backpack on the floor of the backseat. Whew! At our library you can read off overdue fines. Every fifteen minutes you spend reading a book in the library takes of $2 from your fines, so between the kids and me we knocked out the entire fine. Our other car is gone now, too, btw. That the one that had the bearing that ground off while Erick was driving it back in, oh, I think Februrary. I had tried to give it away on Freecyle and couldn't get anyone to take it. Finally I looked online and found a place where you can donate your car and they come pick it up and sell it for their charity. They also give you a voucher for a free hotel stay, so I signed up. They came and got it Tuesday. It was kind of sad to see it go, because it was the vehicle we owned the longest, and it was such a good little car, but I'm glad to have the extra space in front of the driveway.

My sister Emily is pregnant! She called me this morning to tell me the good news. I had been watching her post in the Trying to Conceive thread and I knew she thought she might be, but she didn't test until this morning. Yesterday we were both at our parents' house for a choir practice. My daughter Rachel climbed up into her lap and said, "Where are your kids?" Emily said, "I don't have any kids!" Rachel said, "You're supposed to have kids." It was so funny. I just knew when the phone rang this morning it would be her! I can't wait. She said she thinks she's due in early May. I'm so excited!

My computer monitor has finally completely died. It won't even turn on now--it just clicks a bit. I'm posting from my parents' house right now. Erick's going to see if his dad has any spare monitors that he's not using lying around, and if not, I guess we'll go get one. It's driving me crazy not having easy computer access, though.

I've got a computer monitor of sorts, so I'm back online. It's an old one, though. My father-in-law had it lying around in his garage, and it's dirty and ugly and the screen is small and rounded, but I really am thankful. I'm trying to be, anyway. I have a working computer and it didn't cost me anything, so that's all that matters, right? I'll get used to it. And maybe it will look better once I give it a good cleaning.

Sarah has been suffering from an ear infection. We took her to the doctor yesterday and so she's on an antibiotic now. We're hoping she starts feeling better soon, because today is Timothy's 3rd birthday and we're planning on going to the park today to celebrate. Yesterday was the first day of school, and it went really well. It's always so nice at the beginning--everyone is excited and they do their work. We were done before noon (which was good, since we had a doctor appointment at 2:00!) Even Sarah, as miserable as she was, did school too because she wasn't going to miss out. It's also nice at the start of the school year because all the supplies are brand new and we actually know where everything is. If the instructions say to color the flower red, no one has to hunt under couch cushions in hope of finding a red crayon. They are still in the box, never been used. I bought fifteen boxes this year, so hopefully they'll last long enough. I'm not sure if I got enough pencils or tape, though. This morning we woke up early to see the lunar eclipse. I don't generally like to get up early, but it was worth it to see that. I've never seen a total lunar eclipse before. It was nice that it was close enough to the time we get up anyway that I didn't have to miss too much sleep. We woke up Jay, Joy, and Abby, too. Sarah we figured didn't need to be out in the night air with an ear infection. It took a bit of convincing to keep the kids from looking at the moon, saying, "oh, nice" and then returning to bed. I told Jay that he'd better show some interest or we were going to seriously rethink sending him to college to be a scientist like he says he wants to be.

Sarah's ear is doing much better now. She finally started improving Tuesday night. She didn't feel much like playing when we took them all to the playground for Tim's birthday, and just sat on a bench in the shade with Erick and me. By the time we got home, though, she was actually feeling hungry for the first time in a few days, and ate a whole sloppy joe sandwich and an ice cream cone. She didn't want any cake, though. By Wednesday morning you couldn't tell she had even been sick. Tim really liked his party. He got Thomas the Tank Engine stuff for his birthday. He really likes Thomas now. We had chocolate cake when we got back and invited my mom and dad and littlest sister over to sing with us and share some cake. The rest were at youth group, and we only had one cake to go around so they weren't invited anyway. My dad really liked the cake. He ate about three pieces! It is a good recipe. When they came over, I looked out the window and noticed that my mom had driven her car. I said, "Oh, they drove over" and Rachel said, in a loud, they-must-be-crazy type of voice, "What are they, nuts?" My mom and dad thought it was pretty funny, and mom remarked that Rachel is a very outspoken young lady. That is definitely the truth! We sang Happy Birthday to Timothy, and before we even finished the song he started blowing out the candles. It was pretty cute.

I've decided to stop trying to sell the quilts I've made. I took them all home this week from the craft gallery--I hadn't even sold a thing. I set them outside and tried selling them from the front yard and still didn't sell anything. I didn't sell any the last time I put them some on Ebay, either. I guess this just isn't what I'm supposed to be doing at this point in my life. I gave my sister-in-law and mother-in-law back the things that they had made, and I'm going to give my sister some of the quilts she helped me do. Maybe she can give them to her new baby that she's pregnant with. Of the remaining quilts that I had, I gave them to some of my kids that had destroyed (with love) the quilts I had made for them. Of course the big one I'm going to try and sell for VOM still, though. Then I took my the table runners, potholders, and tote bags and packed them away. I'll use them as gifts for showers and weddings or birthdays, maybe even Christmas. I kept one table runner for myself because it matches with the kitchen curtains. I'll keep doing ones that people want me to do for them, but I think God wants me to use my time for homeschooling right now and not get distracted with trying to make money on the side. The extra would be nice, but that's not what we need to do right now. God has called us to certain things, and having a little extra doesn't seem to be what he's called us to pursue right now.

We had a lovely Labor Day yesterday. Erick had to open, so he wasn't able to come to the first cook-out, but he was off in time to go the second one. The first one was at his side of the family's house. His mom told me that his 18-year old brother was bringing a guest. I asked if it was a female guest, and she said yes. I had a guess at who it might be, and I was right. She's the sister of my sister-in-law. Kayla, the girl who just married my brother Chris, has a sister named Kelsi. If Kelsi marries Ericks's brother Ben, then Kayla will be able to say that her husband's sister's husband's brother's wife is her sister. It seems pretty serious, too! Ben's already asked her dad if he could court her, and with these brothers that's as much as asking for her hand in marriage. I bet they'll be married by the end of the year. Oh, and I also found out that both of these sisters post here sometimes! So maybe I'll find them on here eventually. (ETA--I found Kelsi--actually she found me to let me know I spelled her name wrong which is why I came back here to fix it--and her handle here is Loud-N-Proud.) So then we went to my parents' house for the second cook-out and Ben and Kelsi were the topic of conversation all evening. I even dreamed about them last night! I dreamed they got married and moved in with us! I also dreamed I had this revelation that if you take the "MY" off the end of the word "Mommy" and put it at the beginning, it spells "My Mom".

We had a great field trip today with the kids--we went to visit the Royer's Honey Farm. We've been studying bees this week in the Cooperation unit in Konos. We've have some long-time friends that have been raising honeybees for many years, and I asked them if they could show our small Konos co-op around. I told him there would be less than twenty people there, because I was just thinking the four families in our Konos group would be coming. Well, a few more families also were interested, and we got persmission to invite them along as well. We had about three dozen people there altogether. It was a really neat fieldtrip. He showed us the queen bee, and the broods cells they were making. You could even see the grubs inside the brood cells! There were bees flying everywhere and no one even got stung. It was pretty amazing watching him lift out the frames with his bare hands! He did wear a veil to keep them from his face, and he had a smoker to calm the bees, but no gloves. He brought out several frames of honeycomb and let the kids carry them to the barn where he works on the honey. He cut out the honeycomb and let the kids try some, and then put it in the extractor and let them spin the honey out. We purchased some of his honeycomb and took it home to eat afterwards, too. It was a lot of fun, and a nice beginning to the school year. The kids learned a lot about bees this week. I had asked one of the kids, "Could you imagine having 60,000 sisters and only 200 brothers?" Jay said, "That's about what we've got right now." I guess he still feels like he's in the minority. I don't know--I think two boys are pretty equal to four girls.

Last night we went to the call-out meeting for this year's dinner theatre at church. We're going to be doing one called "All On a Christmas Day. We saw the DVD last night." It's pretty good--has a LOT of dancing in it. I think it's going to be a lot of fun. It has some really silly scenes. One of the first scenes has all these pregnant mothers in labor doing this dance. From what I understand they are actually standing inside a box with wheels with a hole in the lid, but they have it made up to look like a hospital bed and that they are actually lying on the bed. So all these beds are running around the stage with these pregnant women on them, doing this crazy dance. I laughed so hard watching that! The plot has to do with this old man who has had a stroke, and his granddaughter and great-granddaughter are looking through a photo album at Christmases in the old man's past. It goes through a lot of different scenes in different places and time periods, and each one has a big song and dance number. I signed up to be a dancer. The choir director passed our practice schedules, and the dancers are scheduled to practice every other Wednesday night during church. It's a problem for me, though, because I help out in Prims class on Wednesday night. I think I'm the only person in the cast that it's going to be an issue for. I called the Prims teacher and told her my dilemna and she's going to see if she can find a helper for the off weeks. She really needs a helper--she's had some kind of illness for about a year that's causing her pain and swelling and a rash, and it's getting worse. When it first started her husband had just been laid off and so they didn't have insurance. He finally has a position with benefits again, so she's finally able to start looking for treatment. She's going to have to get testing to diagnose this problem, but she said from what she's read it looks like the symptoms for Lupus. If you could please pray for her, I'd appreciate it. I will probably help her out this next Wednesday anyway. I can skip the first practice--I'm a quick learner when it comes to dance anyway, and it's not going to hurt to miss the first one. I'm not sure why they have a practice tomorrow anyway, since she hasn't even announced the cast yet.

Last night our music minister announced the cast. I'm playing the mother of the girl who looks through the photo album and tells the story, so I'm in about three scenes with that. I'm also in three dances--a country dance, a formal dance, and a hippie dance. Erick got a part, too, even though he didn't exactly sign up to be in the play. We're very short on men (as usual) and she wanted to know if he could play my husband. He's got three lines in the very last scene, so he should be able to handle it. There's also a kiss between them, and when he saw that he said he'd do it. It's going to be a lot of fun.

I'm an aunt again! My sister-in-law had her new baby girl yesterday morning. Her name is Saebella. I haven't seen her yet--I'm not sure when I'll get the chance. I hope she hasn't lost that brand-new baby look look before I get to see her. Now I have two nieces and two nephews, plus the baby that my sister is having. We don't know whether she's having a boy or a girl next. It's so much fun watching all of our siblings grow up, get married, and have kids. For so long Erick and I were the only ones that had any kids. We managed to bridge the generations. Our older kids overlap in ages with our siblings, and our younger ones overlap a bit with their cousins. There's a continuous flow of children in our families--no gaps at all. I have two sisters that have love interests now, although I've been sworn to secrecy regarding them. One of my sisters has two young men that like her and she can't decide between them. I told her she's going to have to write a novel about it when she finally decides.

Our chickens started laying yesterday! We got three eggs. I was starting to wonder when they were going to start laying. I was just so excited, I couldn't help but come and tell you all about it. They haven't laid any today yet. I don't know what time of day chickens lay their eggs.

We had such a neat Sunday School class yesterday. Actually, we have Connection Groups now, not Sunday School. They've gone through a few name changes--Christian Education, Adult Bible Fellowship Groups, and now Connection Groups. Basically, it's like Sunday School classes, but we have them in the evening at our church instead of before Sunday morning worship like most churches do. Anyway, Erick is teaching this class, called, "Living by the Spirit", and it's a pretty small class. We've got six total so far, although a couple that Erick did a roof for this summer is going to start coming too, so we'll be up to eight. Most of the classes are a lot bigger than ours, but that's okay. One of the ladies in our class invited us to meet at her house last night, and she made a big pot of chili. She has such a gift of hospitality. She even served us on real dishes! We had such an incredible evening of fellowship. Today is my mom's 51st birthday. We bought her an electric mixer. She lost the beaters to hers and had been borrowing ours for the last several months. One thing that's really nice about living close is them is that I actually knew what she would like for her birthday. It's much harder when you live far away to know what someone else would need or want. We went over there this morning to give the presents to her. She was in the shower when we got there, so we had to wait for her to get out and get dressed first. One of my sisters told me that people at her church are reading my blog to keep track of what's going on. She was upset at me for something someone told her that I had posted here, that I never said! If you are reading this, you know who you are. I never said it, I never named any names, and if you figured it out it wasn't my fault!

Yesterday I went to Life Chain with my parents. Life Chain is a pro-life demonstration where we line the streets holding signs for an hour. It's a yearly event, and we've been doing it about as long as I can remember. I was driving my mom and one of my brothers and two of my sisters home afterwards, and trying to follow my dad, but my mom took too long getting into the car and he left before I could pull away from the curb. My mom said, "Don't worry, I know the way!" But she didn't. Everytime she told me to take a certain way it was the wrong way. I ended up way out in another town and we took a lengthy detour getting home. It was certainly the scenic route! It was fun, though, even though she was terrified I was going to off the road driving 45mph on the windy back roads. In the evening, we went to church and they had the auditions for the kids. Abby did such a good job trying out--actually, all my kids did. I was so proud of them. I can't wait to find out the results. Sometimes I look at my kids and I just can't believe I'm their mom. They are getting so tall and they are so beautiful. The other day Timothy came up to me and gave me a hug and a kiss and said, "I wuv you." I said, "Aw, I love you, too." He replied, "We both wuv me." I thought that was so cute! Oh, and last week at drama practice, I was sitting by Rachel (age 4 1/2) and an older lady in our church. Rachel really loves people and she decided she liked this lady. She was feeling her face, and she said, "You are so old--look at your face." I was so embarrased, but the lady wasn't offended. Rachel just says whatever comes to her mind. She has no tact whatsoever. Dad was telling me that Rachel was telling him the other day that she was learning how to do math. Dad asked her, "What's two plus two?" Rachel shrugged and said, "I only know easy math."

I forgot to mention that we had a big event in our small town yesterday. Our town is very small--we have a church, a post office, and a small used car lot, plus maybe 60 houses, half of them for sale. We live next door to the church. I had been talking to one of our neighbors Saturday who comes around quite a bit--an elderly lady in her late seventies who had an accident when she was younger that damaged her brain. She talks a lot, but sometimes she's difficult to understand. She was talking about a funeral, and she was talking about going over to the church to get ready for tomorrow, and other things. I thought I had figured out there was going to be a funeral at the church tomorrow, and we even wondered if someone would take our parking space while we were at church Sunday like they do sometimes. When we got back from church there were a LOT of cars--many more than there usually is. Thankfully they hadn't taken our space, but they were parked up and down the side road and in the church lawn. I thought that the person who they were having the funeral for must have been well loved. As we were getting ready for lunch, I happened to look out and saw a big Suburban pulling a long trailer trying to squeeze down the road, and on the trailer it said, "The Overtones." The Overtones are a Southern Gospel group that is orignally from the area (Rossville, actually) and I guess are relation of my husband's family. My first thought was, "Why are The Overtones coming to the funeral?" I thought maybe they had got them to sing at the funeral, and then I thought maybe they were related. It didn't even dawn on me until I left for Life Chain and saw the sign outside the church that there was a concert going on, in our town! I guess the funeral is later on this week. One of our former township trustees passed away, and her funeral will be in a couple of days.

I got another forward this morning in my e-mail. It went something like this: "If you really, really love God, and you aren't ashamed of him, send this forward to all of your family and friends. Don't be ashamed of Him, because He wasn't ashamed of you. If you think you dont' have time to read this stupid forward then what you are really saying is you don't have time for God. You should feel convicted, you lousy, hypocrital Christian, for thinking this is silly." Of course, you had to scroll down, waaay down just to read a line at a time. And of course, there was a warning against deleting it, and a blessing for t | | |
